  1. Would the tank need to sit on a sheet of polystrine as glass tanks do, or would it be able to sit stright on top of a stand? Cheers, CatBrat.

    photo's

Hi Dosh, I take my photos in my tank with out using any fancy equipment. I don't have tripod (but I imagine these would help a lot) so I just hold the camera in my hands. Also I don't use a flash as I find this normally gives me a horrible reflection across the photo. I simply darken the room and then take them. Why I am by no means a expert, some of my photos seem to turn out OK (other methods may work better, this is just what I do). heres a couple that I have take using this method: By the way I did not use Photoshop or anything on these. Cheers, CatBrat.
  3. Hi, I have been doing some more thinking and I have some more questions. 1) Would I need to seal the outside of the tank with anything? It will most likly get wet at some stage and I thought that this may effecct the plywood(warping it some how). 2) Where is the best place to buy apoxy and fiberglass matting from? I also found this link on a really cool DIY background. Its got some great ideas. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/phpBB/view ... 42&start=0 Cheers, CatBrat.
  4. Hi Midas, My Feather Fin also seems to go really fat like that every so often (about every month), but no quite as fat as yours. I have been wondering wether it is them fulling up with eggs as well, but I'm not sure. The only way that I know how to sex synos is this from Planet Catfish - Cheers, CatBrat.

Hi Matthew, What price were they? What sort of lengths did they have? Cheers, CatBrat.
  6. Hi, I got myself a new syno today from Jansens. I think that it a is a Yellow Marbled Syno (Synodontis schuotedeni), but I'm not sure. Here it is - http://fff.corydorasworld.com/gallery/CatBrat/Resize_7 http://fff.corydorasworld.com/gallery/CatBrat/Resize_6 http://fff.corydorasworld.com/gallery/C ... e_7?full=1 Sorry about the bad pictures. Bio Balls?

Hi, I was wondering if I would be able to use lava rock as a cheap alternative to the plastic bio balls that you can buy in some shops? Can you think of any advantages/disadvantages of using lava rock in a filter? Cheers, CatBrat.
  9. Hi everyone, My dad and I quite often go fishing in the sea and we catch quite a lot of small baitfish (about 30cm or less). I was wondering if I could use the meat off these fish and feed it to my freshwater fish? Would this have any adverse effects on my fish? Cheers, CatBrat.

    schist

If your looking for for some to decorate your tanks try this. www.trademe.co.nz/Business-industry/Bui ... 701588.htm Just $250 for a ton of the stuff. Might do a couple of tanks . Cheers, CatBrat.
  11. I was thinking about how to colour the background of a tank like this and I thought that one of just plain black would look OK. My question is could I paint the plywood and then coat the paint with apoxy or would this effect the water tightness of it and make the tank more prone to leaks? Midas - I would also like some more info on your filter if you be able to give us any. Cheers, CatBrat.
  12. Have you tried raising the tempture? I have heard that this is one way to kill the bacteria that cause ich. I hope that your fish get better soon. Cheers, CatBrat.
  13. I use this site to put my pictures on the net. http://fff.corydorasworld.com/ It is a great place to put them and it is so easy to use. Cheers, CatBrat.

    GOBYS

I have seen Knight Gobys at the Jansens in Silverdale. I can't rember the price sorry. Cheers, CatBrat
  16. Hi, I keep one of these in my community tank and it seems to be fine. I haven't found much info on them either. I think that its scientific name is Farlowella henriquei. Cheers, CatBrat.
  17. Thanks a lot, I'm starting to price out the tank at the moment. Is marine ply a lot more expensive than other stuff? Cheers, CatBrat.
  18. Thanks for all the help/seggestions for the filter and glass, I have another question, how thick would you recomend for the thickness of the plywood? Would 19mm be ok or should it be thicker? Cheers, CatBrat.

    Big Catfish?

Hi Ira, Wow, I did not think that you could get RTC in NZ. Have you seen them, and do you know what sort of price range? I guess they have to be ordered as I have never seen them in shops. I think the wild catfish that you are talking about is a type of Bull Head and I don't think that they are allowed to be kept. Also, is the Black Shark the same as 'Morulius chrysophekadion', if so not really a cat  . Cheers, CatBrat.

    Big Catfish?

Hi everyone, Does anyone know if you can get any large catfish (ie over a foot, and not plecos) in New Zealand? I am talking about things such as Tiger/Zebra Shovelnoses, Red Tailed Cats ect. Cheers, CatBrat.

    cloudy water

Do you have any real plantes in your tank? I had the same problem in one of my small breeder tanks just after I set it up. When I added some java moss the water cleared up in about a day. You should try some if you can get your hands on it. Cheers, CatBrat.
  22. I would have thought that if this were an Upside Down Syno then it would have the adult colouration (or at least started to change colour, as it is 6cm and they only get about 10cm) of the speckled grey. Also it does not swim upside down at any point, (other than in its cave) which the USD syno does almost all the time. I may be wrong, but I will just have to wait months and see what it turns out to be. Cheers, CatBrat.
  23. I'm almost 100% sure that they are not Upside Down Synos. The photos are the ones of the syno in the tank with no substrate. One guy on Planet Catfish said that it could be a a young of a number of species. Catfish_Dude, are you sure that your synos are Upside Down synos. If they look like mine they may not be. Just a thought. Rob, I have seen these in Tropicl Blues (in Tirau), and the Jansens (in Silverdale, Hibiscus Coast). They may be in other shops too, but haven't been to any in the last coupl of weeks. They were labled as Faether Fins in both shops, also there nocturnal colouration is almost black. I will try to get some better pics. Cheers, CatBrat.
  24. Thanks herefishiefishie, I have changed the link above and it seems to work now. The problem was that I put a full stop after my link. Heres the link again, http://fff.corydorasworld.com/gallery/CatBrat Cheers, CatBrat.
