  1. I would say, they are the easiest fish to keep, super hardy. Just get more of them(10's) in a quarantine tank(decent size with hiding place, rocks and plastic plants)) and you'll see how easy it is.
  2. As far as I know, there is a kind of stress enzyme that put the fish(discus) to sleep before shipping internationally. Once the fish is place in fresh water they just wake back up, lol. From what I'm told, it can't be found in NZ. Shipping fry is risky, esp discus.
  3. oh thanks for the info, I've always wonder what is it for.
  4. Do you think afew handful of tonic salt would help? I recently had a few of my fancy gasping for air after water changes. I add some tonic salt, a table spoon at a time, all recover, not instantly but within 2 hrs. They are swimming happily now. I think my problem is filling up the tank too fast, possibly the same as heavy rain. Since then I'd add new water in a slower rate, and so far so good. .
  5. sweet thanks, I'll move two of them to my discus tank .
  6. What tank mate have you got with your Black Ghost Knife? Can you advice on what fishes can I out with a BGK.
  7. ah, thanks. . I did a few search on marine and it seem RO is a must. Possibly looking at starting one, lol, that wil be the day, lol.
  8. Wow, fantastic, it's a masterpiece.
  9. haha that's what I do, the KISS way
  10. Interesting, what about marine? Do they have to add all minerals in before using the RO water?
  11. Post the photo of the infected area of the fish. Hopefully someone here can identify it.
  12. True, didn't think about their different diet. As for water parameter, I assume they are adaptable to quite a reasonable range. Didn't taught the BuluPoint and Ikola'd cross breed  . No I dont want that, lol. The tank size is 0.6 X0.7 X 1.8 (dpXwidthXlength). So that means no Arowana eh, mann ....... I love Arowana. Thanks for the offer. I'm presently waiting for it to fully cured and also for the shop to open so I can get mat'l to get the stand welded. Will then cover it up with ply . Yet to source or decide on the lightings. I'll definately want to see your fishes once I get the tank cycled. My wife loves the Africans . Am I losing touch? lol.
  13. Great, everyone has a valid point on choice of fishes. Initially planed for arowana but my wife like Chiclids. Will Ikola, BuluPoint, Electric Yellow, Frontosa, Black Ghost Knife, Tiger Borneo(small), silver dollar and possibly arowana be compatible? Most are young adult atm. A mixture of everything, lol. I wont be going into reef as I lack the experience and knowledge .
  14. I've got myself a new 6 footer tank. Any recomendation for multiple species, plants with driftwood, rocks or corals. I'm thinking of monster fishes but open to any idea. Would it look beter at the center of the room or against the wall. I've yet to build the stand thou.
  15. Any idea of a profesional mover that'd move a tank that big? I got one that need to be moved, provided I find a mover. Any recomendation? plz
  16. Yea, Interested in one too but any moving company in Auckland does that?
  17. sorry posted on the wrong thread, will repost at the right one, tomorrow, cuz it late now, haha. .
  18. Can anyone list the nativies freshwater fishes, cray, frogs and ........, that are legal to buy/sell .... it'd be nice if they are made avaliable and promoted.
  19. Would I get away with daily water changes by monitoring the amonia and nitrite level? If the level is higher than acceptable then I'd change more water. That's what I've been doing and seem alright, with reasonable stock of course.
  20. I was just going thru all threads and taught I'd share what I know which is not much actually and I may be wrong, lol. Salt bath as I know is to fill a containter big enough to place a fish in. Add a handfull or two of salt, place the affected fish in, it will go belli up withun sec, let it stay beli up for a 15-20 sec, then remove it back to pond or recovery tank. If it didn't go belli up, then there is not enough salt. Do this daily till the fishes recover.
  21. Wow, they do carry some very interesting fishes. It make me wonder if we can get importer to get them in? What'd be the minimun nos importer would look at before they commit?

yea, I've been told of the reason of their ban, the disease/pest they carry. Is that disease still an on going concern? I was shocked at the prices they fetched here. From where I come from they are dirt cheap be it orandas, ranchus, or ...... Because of the bann, they're highly priced here. hmmmm saying that, I think all fishes are highly priced here in NZ, lol, but not as overly priced as gold fishes. Edit: I'd like to take back what I said about the high price of fishes in NZ. lol. I've not been into fishes for about 15-20 yrs now, haha. Times have change and prices of fishes has certainly escalate. Just been into the site of Malaysian Online fish shop and mannn...... they are certainly alot more expensive now then it used to be. My humble apologies

Interesting, I saw some off the nett from Japan, very impressed by their quality. I wonder why there is so little suply here in NZ. I've seen quite a few ranchus and lionheads, usually from the same breeder and that made me wonder if they are from the same brood.

So do they come from same spawn/breed/parents, I mean selected few are ranchus and the rest lion heads and some others.
