  1. always open and keen to for anything. everyone always welcome here for part of a tank crawl.
  2. i think its a L168 as the L52 normally have a "stripe" but that fishies lines bubble in and out. just my opinion
  3. i'm sure if you go into something fishie he will order you in any slat you want at good rates. If not Wetspets stock redsea salt.
  4. i would like to say sorry to everyone... as stella knows i wont be here that weekend so i cannot participate.... i might have setup my new tropical tank (in planning at the mo) by then too. damb it so good luck with the crawl stella i really hope alot of the people with smaller tanks pitch in coz the are sometime the better ones. You always think your tank is not right or not good enough... but truth is that not many other people think that coz your a perfectionist (i will put my hand up for that one)
  5. i have had quite a success keeping fancy plecos in the past with plants. What i have foound is that the plants must be left for a while before the plecos get in so they set up root systems and get used to the tank andstart growing etc. and yes you do need c02 to really get them pumped Sorry hans i didn't say before but the tank is only 400deep and 700wide... its going to fit into an alcove in our new house... Just thinking about it one fluro and a 150 halide should be fine.. I know moon lights are mainly marine but does anyone use them on tropical - to get plecos out at night maybe??
  6. i was hoping to try grow a grass on the base and maybe some amazon sword etc... but trying to do full bark/peat and mulch base with heater so i can get some of my fav plecos back but still grow some nice foliage
  7. I have been out of fresh water tanks for a little while and are now re looking into having a tank again..... Just wondering what kind of lighting i need to successfully grow plants in a 800 deep tank... i was thinking just a 150 halide and 2 fluros.. also do you have them on timers like a marine tank so the fluros do so many hours and the halides to lesser hours?? ta
  8. just on a technical note, poly only give you half to two thirds of an insulation value of batts (based on 50mm poly = R1.2 insulation value) I have almost a whole bale f batts here for $60 if you want it. it will only go about 10-12 square metres
  9. I would just like to say a big tahnks to stella and the guys for putting this tri[ on!! Even though i couldn't make it for most of the items (stupid wallpaper man) I must admit i learn't lots - never actually seen any prior to the day. And after all of the day i think the definate fav had to be the torrent fishes!! so thanks heaps and heaps stella
  10. hey sorry to jump in on the end of this talkie. but i had one and found it worked very well as long has you have a light fish load and not the biggest tank. As long as you have a needle wheel pump that pumps about 2000L/hr your all good. Your always welcome to give me a buzz if youwant to come around and say hi again an i will help in any way and show you my setup. Ta James
  11. everyone knows i will be in, 1 marine just for a differnce. even though most has exploded over the heat wave a little while ago.
  12. hi, i have exactly one of these on my marine tank. it is a very good starter to get it to the sump but there are a couple of problems: when you get the plumbing device to alter the water flow to the sump it is very tempermental... ie can spend upto 5 hours fighting with it (or maybe i'm useles :-? ) and even though people say low loise it is still louder than a normal overflow (in my opinion). so only get it if you already have the tank setup or it is not in a main living/sleeping area. But next time i will spend the extra $60 and get a tank with a corner overflow. hope this helps in some way
  13. i have moved multiple times with different sizes. no one will shift it with water as it is way too heavy!! And Chrisa - most moving companies wont move tanks unless you have a whole truck load but all offer insurance when moving, and if not ask them for it.

    L046

ok seen it http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 38.htm?p=1 looks like it maybe more!! I was also talking to someone else 6 motnhs ago who was going to import them and they were going to be bout $600 each. So the question is .... how deep are your pockets?

    L046

i see it has been pulled? As last time a "true" L46 came up it went for $350-400. But they are now all very rare as most got shipped to aussie (last i heard) from someone on here selling them. Post a link please if it is still live
  16. Hi all. Now i wish to ask anyone to please help me plan my next tank. The only downfall is it could not prevail as we are weighing up either moving house or extending our house at present. And The pain is i need to plan for the tank either way as this will take longer than me drawing the house alteration for building consent. So please please help me The first question is i have a bit of a problem! the only way i can get the new tank in the house is if it is near quiet (i go told - "about the same loudness as a dehumidifier"). Now at present i have a marine tank with sump underneath and this one i am either having marine only or a marine/tropical combo (will discuss later) So - what is the best way to minimise the noise? I have 2 new locations in mind. One has to have the sumps in cabinet, the other can have a in cabinet / in store combo. But still not too much noise from the cupboard ( and the cupboard is only 600mm sq on the inside) is a must due to it being next to the front door. So the question i first need to ask is in cabinet with .... or combo with ... So please help me as i plod along.
  17. It would help if you could take a pick of your one then we can tell you for sure! The one in the pic is a sydontus (mind the spelling) but a pictus cat looks very similar. To help a bit more: A pictus has long straight whiskers and a sydontus has whiskers like a tree branch. ooh and if you brave enough you can handle the fish and see if the whiskers slice you or not (only kidding - dont do that it hurts)
  18. Hi I was hoping if someone could help my friend, she is after a nice red sword that is low growing to fit in her tank corner (in the left of her pic) It has co2 running and quite a lot of light, so this all helps. So can anyone suggest what and where to get it from please? and maybe a pic to see what it looks like? Thanks everyone
  19. Thanks to all who let us into their homes. It wasa great outing!! Cheers
  20. good to hear. Its always nice to catch up with other club members.
  21. Just a reminder to everyone that this is happening this Saturday!! We are starting off at 20 Haydon Street at 8-830am and heading over from there as we can car pool if anyone needs a ride (always spare seats) We will be stopping at some homes organised by Warren over in Napier and also some shops along the way, so bring your wallets . Also if we have time we might even stop in at the aquarium. So if anyone would like to come along your all welcome even if you want to join in over in Napier!!! I look forward to seeing everyone on the morning, or feel free to PM me before that time for anything else. It will be a great day!! James

    New setup

Hey everyone has to ask questins to learn! I can't help you on the first one. But the second one is that you hvae to keep an eye on trademe for "live rock"(the closest we come is cured rock which has been in someone elses tank for a while) it varies in price from 10 - 20 per KG and it is nearly always in auckland (lucky you). So you just keep an ear out. Third one have a look at this site. it is very handy and has multiple setups. I have found it very helpful. http://www.melevsreef.com/allmysumps.html Lastly powerheads dont matter in placement too much. Once you have everything in there all you have to do is make sure they aren't blowing straight over or onto a coral(unless they like it) and also to get rid of as many dead spots in the tank so no wastes collects. Hope this all helps
