  1. Would multiple teenager management count?? Less teeth but probably comparable in attitude!!
  2. Would DIY work in a larger tank - say 500l, if I set up two separate systems independant to each other at opposite ends?
  3. This will be my first read!! Can't wait! :bounce:
  4. Well then, if you're not going to be freaking out small children and the elderly, cave theme would be pretty cool. Although after seeing Jennifer's shellies last night.................... :-?
  5. I'll fess up and say I had to Google those fish, have to say they look like they've been skinned! I'm biased and will put my hand up for planted community.
  6. Tank photos are coming..... honest! I had high hopes of getting everything moved over the long weekend but ended up doing in my back....... sitting and standing was about the limit of my movements for almost a week! :-?
  7. Went for a gander at our LFS and saw they had these. They also had the 'standard' black neons and the 'ultra' are similar with the same blue line but are much bigger and darker, and a little deeper in the body. I've googled but came up with absolutely nothing except the standard Black Neon (Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi). Any suggestions on another name they may have?
  8. Matilda is a nickname I've had for almost 20 years. The 'nz' was tacked on when I joined an english forum.

    Tannins

Will a change in tannin levels effect fish? One of my tanks at the moment is quite yellowy brown and is holding the majority of my fish, while my quarantine tank is clear and the cycling one is slowly turning yellow. I'm hoping to transfer all the fish from their current tank into the big one soon but wonder if the low levels of tannins will be a problem? All other water parameters match. Cheers
  11. Not bad at all, compared to the rest of you! ..........two with inhabitants, one in preparation mode and one empty.
  12. ____ when you're at the dentist waiting for the injections and your 'happy place' is imagining how your aquarium will look finished.
  13. Whe you go from 1 tank to 3 in the space of a weekend.
  14. Not sure now. Seemed like a good idea at the time. So in total numpty terms it's not really the tank that's cycled, it's the filter?? Not sure why I thought it was a combination of the two. Looks like a young ramshorn. Chomped it's way through a leaf.
  15. Excellent, thanks for that. Had planning on transfering filter along with the fish. There's bound to be snails living in it so what would be the safest way to remove the majority without disrupting the good bacteria. Wouldn't be to concerned but they've taken quite a liking to my new Spiral Val!
  16. I'm currently seeding my 3 footer with water from my smaller one each time I do a water change. Taking between 1/4 - 1/3 each time, once a week. 3 footer is perhaps 40% 'old' water at the moment. What's considered a 'safe' percentage of 'old' and 'new' water before transfering the fish? Can I take water more often without an adverse reaction? I not keen to take all the cycled water as I may just need it as a quarantine tank thanks
  17. We aren't upping our prices at work, bit hard to add the extra GST to a 10c photocopy!!
  18. Hmmm.... think I might need a higher fence! Wee Weka sat on top of the fence playing Lady Muck in the sun yesterday. AND I clipped her wing on Sunday! Fence is the same height as the gate which she never sat on :-? Tart!!
  19. I have a cochin, pekin and 2 mix breed bantams. Little pekin is the boss and rules everyone with an iron fist!! Friendliest wee thing though and will sit on my knee given half a chance. I wouldn't be surprised if she was a cat in a previous life, and the cochin likes to chase butterflies! They are all very different which makes keeping them fun. If you are having them roam around the garden, I'd suggest breeds with feathered feet - they aren't 'supposed' to dig up the garden quite so much, however I think mine threw that rule book out the door! Do have a tendancy to go broody with monotonous regularity but I knock that out of them pretty quick. Eggs aren't the biggest but make up for it in taste. My girls get fed pellets and mash, left over cooked vege, all the peelings from roast dinners that I boil up, soaked bread on occasion when the kids haven't hoovered it all up, the occasional treat of wheat and corn. They spend most days eating grass when I'm home. Didn't get a single grape off the vine this year.......... I'm surprised the little beggars didn't end up with the runs! They soon learnt that the spade means worms so digging holes for fencing was a fairly daunting exercise.......... a little black hen at the bottom of a hole is pretty much invisible! 6 foot is nothing to a determined chicken. The scissors came out pretty quick when we found a hen sitting on top of the 6 1/2 foot coop! Definitely clip wings but just one side, a fair bit of flapping with get a chook over a fence but not so much when she's lopsided and goes round in circles!! Orpingtons would be on the top of my list when I come to adding more but back when I started with them, the price was astronomical! Probably my best piece of advice.............. don't chase a chicken out of your house - a scared chicken tends to poop! Enjoy
  20. Congratulations and good luck for the big day! Been married for almost 18 years and I won't lie and say it's been easy BUT I've finally managed to get him cleaning the loo and cooking!!
  21. ....... when you put back the uber comfy shoes that you know you can wear all day, every day standing at work for at least the next 5 years and buy a Jager heater from Organism instead!! Who needs new shoes anyway......... I'll be fine as long as I don't wander through a puddle!!!
