  2. Well, DH rang HFF mt roskill on the weekend and they had no cockatoo cichlids at all, so was vy surprised to find two tanks full when I went there today. Perhaps they only just got them in? Very lucky that I went as well, it was a totally unplanned window shopping  The lady you and I got ours from had a second batch growing out, I wonder if she has just now sold this batch to HFF? Anyway, there were about maybe 8-10 in the female tank, but only one that I could see with black pectoral fins - the rest looked similar to my undeveloped male. You might get lucky, there may be another real female hiding in the corner cos I stopped looking as soon as I saw my one
  3. OK - take 2  Have just picked up another female, feeling positive about this one It has definite black on its pectoral fins, definite black first 2 or so rays of the dorsal fin. The dorsal fin rays are all same size (tho they do extend a tiny bit at the caudal end). The tail fin is flat rather than pointed at the end, and doesn't have the patterning at all on it. However it is a bit smaller than the other ones I have so could possibly just be younger? Will try to get a pic up for the experts later this afternoon fingers crossed!

    Leeches

eeyew I thought that the only pockets of leeches in NZ were in Dannevirke (seriously, not a slur against Dannevirkians LOL). My sisters friend had leeches attached to her before a skin graft op to increase blood flow... *shudder*
  5. Aren't the first pic and the bottom of the second both males? (pointy end to the dorsal fin and pointier tail fin?)
  6. I disagree! I looked after a budgie for a couple months when my daughter was a baby, and I had to put him outside when she was sleeping because of the constant chatter and screeching. Had to move him out of the lounge if we wanted to watch tv. We had two cockatiels and they were heaps quieter, more pleasant whistling too. Tho - if you do get a cockatiel, never take for granted that they don't know how to open the door of the cage. My one learnt how to flip up the door and I didn't cotton on until after he got out the second time (I thought I had left the door open the first time) and we lost him. So = always peg the doors
  7. They had labelled the tank cockatoos - some confusion as they had come in from the wholesaler as cockatoo double reds apparently, so maybe thats why the price? (are now labelled agassizi ).. They said that it wouldn't alter the price - maybe they paid a cheaper price for them because they came in as something different?
  8. FYI - went to HFF albany today and they had agassizi for $28 - only males tho that I could see. tho they thought there might be one female in there. But vy nice looking males some of them.
  9. Obstacle - I think you are confused because these are agassizi not cacatuoides Another apisto for you to covet  Beautiful fish P44!
  10. I cut a "door" in mine fairly easily with a hacksaw. It would take a little longer to cut completely in half but the terracotta does cut easier than wood IMO.
  11. another thought - spur winged plover? they make a loud sound that could be described maybe as yip yip yip http://www.avianweb.com/maskedlapwings.html couldn't find their call anywhere online tho, but apparently they have a variety.
  12. We had a nest of blackbirds in our eaves once and the baby birds calling to the mother sounded just like this. I would think that many baby birds could sound like this.... penguins? I would think there would be too many dogs and cats around in wgtn to get kiwi
  13. he has a 2X2X1 (actually not sure how tall it is) And my point is that "nano" is in the eye of the beholder. A nano should be something teeny teeny tiny. A 90L tank I guess should just be called petite  . I do get what you are saying P44 - but compared to kelly tarltons all our tanks are nano's I know it is not intentially being elitist, but it comes across that way when an average sized tank (for an average hobbyist) is called a "nano". I feel a particular empathy here knowing that fish_tank0311 has likely saved very carefully and bought the largest tank he can afford or is allowed the space for.
  14. Can I just say referring to a 60cm X 60cm, 90L tank as a nano is a little rude, and not particularly supportive to beginners? Nano-, by definition, is 1 billionth.... so unless someone has a tank that is one billion times bigger than his then they probably don't have any right to call a 2ft by 2ft tank a "nano". I say this because having the time and space and commitment to have 6-8ft tanks in their living room is probably not the norm for this hobby, and the majority of entry level fishkeepers would start with a 50-90L tank. I think it is fairly off-putting to beginners and makes this site seem unwelcoming when people judge you for the size of your tank and deem anything under 100L a nano... OK rant over
  15. Just thought I would post this for you again, cos it looks like you might have missed reading it. But you have had a good offer from ryanjury as well
  16. http://www.ashore.co.nz/index.php?main_page=contact_us think they have a dozen escargot shells for 7.95, shop in birkenhead. Haven't been myself but found them on the net.
  17. thanks Sam, you are a star The extension on the dorsal fin on the top one is an optical algae illusion  and scuse the pic of the scratched glass in the second photo
  18. Thanks Sam, have sent you an email. Think the fnzas website just doesn't approve of my photography skills
  19. Thanks P44, was thinking the same thing - was faffing around with photos when you posted Have another pic to post with dorsal fin slightly raised but cannot seem to get it to load even tho it is under the required size, it says its not
  20. unfortunately I can't get a decent pic of my definite male to compare. The "female" definitely does not have the raised dorsal fin extensions when its shown, or the tail fin extensions that my male has. But I see your point about the pointed edges to the tail tho... hmmm, poos. Was skeptical of its femaleness cos apparently there were only 3 in the batch (made me think possibly all male?) Should I keep it by itself to get him to show his maleness? tho found this pic of a female on the net (in german tho) which also has a lot of colour, and the pointed edges to its tail? http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/se/fisk ... ichlid.php (of course am grasping at straws cos I want it to be female)
