    algae

i had a staghorn algae outbreak a few weeks back. i got some flourish excel, in 3 days, it was all dead.
  2. cheers. No idea what the orange discus are... The babies are blue turqs. starting to show colour. Red fujis have red eyes dont they? (which these dont) so that rules them out... im guess them marlboro ones or whatever they're called. i think the hairgrass is starting to send out runners now. i see a few little hairs popping out 2 cms from the larger ones. =]
  3. Updated pics of my tank if anyone cares... http://s916.photobucket.com/albums/ad1/ ... ngs003.jpg http://s916.photobucket.com/albums/ad1/ ... ngs001.jpg http://s916.photobucket.com/albums/ad1/ ... ngs002.jpg What crypt is this????? http://s916.photobucket.com/albums/ad1/ ... ngs004.jpg any suggestions?
  4. diffuser is like.. $20? how much is canister? Is this a good set up?
  5. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =276897325 What must i add to this? apart from co2?
  6. "can" How much would a bought one cost? (or everything bought and put together) was just given $140 :bounce: so i am now much closer to being able to afford a Co2 system. so i think i'll save up for one before i go spend it all.
  7. haven't tried DIY, i think it was p44(?) said that it wouldn't have much effect in my 240l... so i guess its not worth the effort. Also, how much does co2 cost to refill, and how often do i have to do that?
  8. i found this. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 501031.htm (probably belongs to someone on here) i know i could search the internet for info on co2 systems, (which i have, briefly) but i would like to know from ppl with experience. Would this have all that i need? Because it would cost lots to ship to me, i'll probably build/buy one in chch, so how would i do that to make it affordable. TBH i dont really know what is needed in 1 of these systems. The diagrams i've seen are too complicated for me.
  9. Growth rate? Will it be okay in sand? how much WpL do i need? (do i need reflectors in my juwel) Does it need ferts? Can i find it wild in CHCH cos im getting close to being broke. And tell me other things i need to know and let me in on ur experiences.
  10. GASP! was just taking a random guess of what i tohught i saw in the background...
  11. nutrient rich clay balls. They slowly dissolve and release nutrients for the plants roots to absorb. Its an easy and much cheaper alternative to these $100 substrates you can buy. Not as good of course because its much more localized, but still work well. These should really provide ur plants with enough nutrients seeing as you dont have very many.
  12. Ask in a petshop. Or wait for some more experienced people to log on and post. Im not expert. I had kind of the same problem, i bought some sword plants, which started to die, i bought some ferts, and they were fine. You could always buy some JBL balls to stick into ur gravel. Its like $15 for 7 which will last a year or something
  13. I see. could be immersed --> submersed conversion. The round leaved one doesn't really look aquatic. immersed ones usually seem less green and look stronger. If those white bits on the round leafed plants were on it when u bought it, then it was grown immersed.
  14. My guess would be that adding ferts would help. Not sure what is wrong tbh. They aren't new plants are they?
  15. i see. Quite like it like that though.
  16. thats amazing. Looks like miniature roses.
  17. Just received some African fern off Bichon. Looks great. anything i should really know about it? ALSO!! I would like to replace my vall. nana. I need a good background plant. preferable something that will fill the gaps nicely. Any suggestions?
  18. It will attach to rocks. For some reason i've never been able to grow java moss very well. -.-
  19. i reckon the best way for moss to look nice as a carpet would be to attach it to large, flat rocks rather than gravel. Hairgrass would have the same effect aswell i guess.
  20. My discus destroyed the some snails i put in... almost instantly.
  21. I really like anubias. And mosses. African fern looks quite cool. Will see when it arrives =]
  22. 1 slip of the hand could have set me back a couple of hundred dollars, given me 1 angry dad, a ruined carpet, a ruined xmas and 1 very sad boy My heart jumped when that happened. I can recall it so vividly.......................................
  23. Almost happened to me with my brandnew juwel. :-? When i was setting it up, one of the rocks fell out of my hand and hit the side really hard. was a big rock too. luckily i had sand in there already
