  1. has anyone noticed that these units are quite noisey? I kind of knew this was a problem with these powerheads but i was being optimistic in the hope that it wouldn't be a major problem. Does anyone have any tips on quieting them down a bit?
  2. and a whole lot more, most units produce 99-99.9% pure water
  3. The standpipe threads into the bulkhead this was the only thrad that I didn't tape and this was where it was leaking, the bulkhead is not plumbed to anything because i am not adding the sump until a later date. There was no avoiding emptying the tank because I couldn't find where the leak was coming from until the tank was empty and could be moved.
  4. SAT: Filled tank with approx 300 litres of water, mixed salt, added the sand, added the rock, looking great, pat myself on the back. SUN: Wake up to a dreaded drip drip sound, a little bit of swearing, Durso standpipe is leaking. Drain water out again, remove the rock, dismantle overflow box, remove standpipe. Forgot to put thread tape on the standpipe when connecting to the bulkhead, kick myself. I forget the number one rule ALWAYS CHECK FOR LEAKS BEFORE FILLING WITH WATER how could I be so stupid!!!! Tank looked great by the way, can't wait to get it up and running again.
  5. $425 for a 4 stage unit $620 for a 5 stage drinking water system ( this is a very good price others have quoted at around the $1300 mark for similar units)
  6. It dawned on me that something was wrong when we went to Seaworld a couple of months ago and My camera card filled up very quickley Photos of kids and wife = 27 Photos of wildlife = 16 Photos of fish = 148
  7. $120 seems to be the standard price for instant ocean (you need to find a new supplier Chimera!) If someone looked at buying in bulk I bet it would drive the price down considerably (this is a hint to a few of you!! )
  8. 25 degrees down here, shorts and singlet weather 8) 8)

    New Reef Tank

Well done mate, good to see you've got it up and running, looks great. I'll have to come up and check it out some time.
  11. You sound like you have a similar set up to the one I am building at the moment, a Aquaone R2 150 5' tank holding approx 370 L. I have read screads of articles on DSB's, plenum sytems and the likes and have been planning my setup for well over a year now. In the end I have decided not to use a DSB in the display tank purley for looks, a thinner sand bed is easier to keep clean and can be replaced with minimal cost. However I have decided to use a DSB in a refugium that will be approx 6-8 inches deep because I believe DSB's (or plenums but I want go there!!) are the best natural means of nitrate reduction. My suggestion is to go with what ever you feel comfortable with, trying either of the suggested sand beds doesn't mean your system will fail, you will here millions of different suggestions and arguments on this topic and it will only confuse you with each different opinion you read.
  12. For that price put me down for one!!

  21. It's probabley due to being exposed to the tide
  22. If I was building the tank from scratch then I would definately consider it, I have seen this done before using 19mm toughened glass and i think it is a great Idea. But as my tank is incased in a resin frame including braces this is not an option. Pies mentions using a 40mm drain hole, would this not be the same as having 2 20mm holes?? and wouldn't it be easier to hide two smaller overflows compared to one larger one?? I was considering a straight acrylic panel across each of the back corners as opposed to the regular square overflows making them more unnoticeable.
  23. It sounds like a good idea Chimera but I wouldn't even attempt for the same reasons Pies mentioned, but I do like the Idea of the centre overflow though. I'm trying to get away from having any plumbing from going over the top of the tank because it will be topless with pendant lighting. am i better to have the returns just below the water line? I havent considered sea swirls at this stage of the game.
