  1. mite have been a few involved in last nights rant  still ....good to stir things up every now and then aye
  2. i know your not,i would assume(make an ass out of you and me)that you started with fish and have moved onto a frog or bluey or beardie or all of the above.i would also assume e.c.t they are kept in aquariums?or maby a combo aquarium/ outside day run????/ am i close or just an ass
  3. bwa ha haa haaa, theres that knee jerk reaction thats responsible for this situation in the first place....What about adam and eve and the serpent thing..... or fire eating dragons for that matter...is the whole creepy reptile thing that deeply ingrained in the human subconscious that its a lost cause?????
  4. nuff said from me im gona go ta bed, work tomorow, good to stir things up a bit, been a bit quiet in this forum lately  p.s any maf, doc, biosecurity out there watching,im always keen here a reply!
  5. yes im hearing you, they arnt! how come we can buy up to say 200 different species of fish,at least 50 species of bird, dont start me on cats,dogs,rats,mice,pigs,goats,ferrits,sheep,cows,e.c.t....but reptiles are the bad guys. also i got 3 kids and many animals to feed.easyer to have a rant every now and then than to lobby politicians and or bang your head against a brick wall aye...many have tryed and got nowhere.are you keen to have a go
  6. they deystroy as no way of proving exact point of origin ,and as an unknown disease risk wont put back in the wild. they shouldnt have to be smuggled in the first place....
  7. ok your obviously a fish person, what if you went to your local aquarium and all that was available was guppies, sordtails, angle fish, neon tetras aaaand ohhh plecostomus! but someone said psssst for $5000 i can get you a zebra pleco.....wouldnt you want to ask the powers that be, why you cant buy one legally...
  8. silly questions you say, what if i told you i asked most of those silly questions to a biosecurity orficer ,and the answers(except from the lets have a burning e,c,t) were almost verbatim.... ask your mates if they can spend some of there precious time, and our money, working with us...or are they too busy protecting the rat.
  9. I think your missing the point,or looking at it backwards! a cleanly imported herp(cheap) compared to smuggled animals in both disease and price.$10 green iguanas for example from say a south american breeder, they go to a local wholesaler,he screens them for nz standard disease(but there isint one ,to hard basket)the price tripples $30,imported to nz quarinteen facility, price doubles again $60,pass health check goes to wholesaler, price doubles again $120 goes to pet shop or local herp dealer price doubles again$240...say a greeniguana licence from maf or doc e,c,t is $500 so $740 to you.damm sight cheeper than $5000 dollars with disease risk, and them saying yes go for it for 6 months or so and then doing an about face and saying NO KILL THEM ALL because we want to make an example of someone... im not looking for answers, just pointing out how dysfunctional our current system is... anyone else got the balls to speak up!........ ANNND is anyone going to bother smuggling in a green iguna if the base price is $240......... i dont thint so....ANNNNND it some escape the permit ,so what ,they are clean anyway and if they escape they will be dead by winter!
  10. ANYONE FROM BIO SEC/MAF/DOC CARE TO ANSWER THESE BROAD ASSUMTIONS??????
  11. i wish we had a better bio security/ doc/maf... Q how come we can import tropical fish but not tropical reptiles? A disease risk! Q if they were legaly imported they could be tested for disease? A Ahhh... um... sounds like too much work. Q but then there would be no smuggled animals from who knows where entering nz,and no disease! A ahhh ummm to much hard work. Q what do you do for a job? Ahhh...UMMMM...as little as possible. Q but if you made the license the expensive part and the animal cheap, there would be no smuggling and no disease risk and be able to pay someone to police it from license revenue... A ahhhhh.....ummmmm...easier for us to just ignore the problem unless bought to our attention in wich case we will confiscate and destroy the animals and start a realy expensive court case with your tax money...or just destroy the animals and not start a realy expensive court case (iguana gate) .....keystone cops??? or generally assume the animals were smuggled and destroy them....... Q soooo basically the system dosent work. A ummmm....ahhhhhh........cant know, hey cleetus hand me da petrol wees gona have ourself a burning!!!!
  12. cheap n fast fish, they help clean up after the turtles,go for snake necks if you want hardy plants i.e valisnaria.
  13. http://www.stuff.co.nz/environment/3840 ... -destroyed
  14. about 5 ,no you dont feed for at least a week, yes at least 4 weeks, dont bother unless they are adults that arnt producing young, was trying to make a point, just read the other posts.
  15. id go undergravel filter, normal size gravel is fine. no heater unless outside and below freezing. the rest as per other thread.
  16. yea your on the money, the deeper water helps for water quality and as you say driftwood breaking the surface so they can get out if they have to but promoting the aquatic phase for growth e.c.t
  17. yea just havin a laugh  your on the same page anyway,if been trying to tell the petshops for years,i get sick of seeing newly morphed newts in a terrestial tank with a water bowl.
  18. how deeps the water? crickets you say, must be xl newts r u sure there not morphed axys  mmmmmmm whole other topic..
  19. YES! read the reply...... :bounce:
  20. trust me on this, have been keeping them for over 20 years. for recently morphed newts, set up an aquarium 2 thirds full or more .minimum 2 foot. heavly planted(valisnarias good) driftwood just breaking the surface. no moss e.c.t as they will hide in it. outside is the best, shade cloth n chicken mesh cover(you can chop off a plastic jar with screw top and mount in cover for easy feeding) in a spot that gets a couple of hours filtered sunlight(not direct sunlight) if inside try to place half the tank next to a north facing window,as it will get weak sunlight in winter n difuse light in summer, use a uv if inside. then if you feed out wingless fruit flys they will hang out on the driftwood and as they spread out the newts will start swimming after them n go aquatic. once aquatic feed frozen blood worms, white worms in spring for breeding condition ,fruit flys e.c.t to give you an indication about 15 or so years ago, i purchaced a 6 year old newt that was kept terestrial from day one...it was still the size of a baby..... i put it in with the others n within a year it was 2 thirds grown and breeding like crazy(high fertility to) once they have some size then do a 50/50 enclosure with moss in ferns e.t. winter outside or cold side of the house inside. as this triggers off breeding in spring... dont be scared of cold,it snows in winter where they come from..
  21. you no listen.... did the pet shop tell you to raise them terristrial ? :-? if you are goin to, you might as well put them in the fridge(brumation) for 4 weeks or so and then set them up aquatic!(simulated spring)
  22. id be real carefull ,have seen a young bluey only about a third bigger, kill and eat a 3 month old beardie! id want the beardie to be at least a third larger.
  23. if you keep them aquatic instead of terrestrial for the first year they will grow 3 times as fast n eat bloodworms, whiteworms frozen brineshrimp e.c.t.normaly the terrestrial phase is winter dormancy and they head for water in spring.
