  1. I hate these auctions. My first ever tank was a little 40l jebo which I overstocked pretty quickly with small fish, and then got a bigger tank and felt really stupid about being overly excited about my first when they got a nice case of whitespot, never again. I don't know how he can look at his tank and think they're fine when they look as if they can hardly turn around. They seriously need laws against ignorant owners of any animals, wouldn't you have at least made plans to upgrade when they got huge.
  2. Oops that was me above, wrong account. Just watched the video, didn't expect it to be that scary looking. I don't like all this stuff happening at all. :nilly: Might be time to actually put together an emergency kit actually.
  3. I love that his body has already been thrown into the sea. Something can't be right. Guess we'll never really know. It's disgusting that everyone is celebrating. I've hated watching the news today, it's one of those things where you completely lose faith in mankind. He obviously wasn't a nice guy but really? Guess we'll see what happens over the next few months. :spop:
  4. I think it's just another man with a beard and a hat.
  5. They're all sorted apart from the big Eheim that was in the tank of doom. Everything is off, we'll pull it apart and start over.
  6. I don't know if it's worth the trouble of finding a smiley that only one person will get a lot of use out of. :dunno:
  7. Yeah I was looking into the battery air pumps actually. It's a good idea. We've had some bad luck with fish since moving here for some strange reason. They're looking much better now.
  8. It was a couple of days until it spiked. Worst week ever and everyone looked fine so it was assumed that it was ok. It's been set up for a couple of months.
  9. It actually wasn't. It's a 200l tank, with I don't know how many but not a lot of swords. Hence I didn't quite expect it, maybe it didn't help it was due for it's weekly clean. Not impressed at all.
  10. So if anyone has watched the news at all this week you'll know we've been getting some pretty extreme weather in certain parts of the country. I was at work when the power decided to go out and busy evacuating people (oh the excitement! ) and i think the power was out from 12.30 until about 6 and then went off again for a few more hours around 8. Obviously it was pretty dark at this point, and with one torch and no candles we couldn't do much, apart from consider how useless we'd be in a real emergency. Our ammonia measured in somewhere between 2 and 4. Super. So the swords developed this fungus, which thanks to furan 2 is already going away. We lost 4 swords and platys this morning and after the whole fighter episode and generally having no luck since we moved I am still half tempted to throw it all in and become an amazing gardener, it's not half as sad when plants die. Anywho, it's it worth adding any salt or should I just stop stressing and let the furan do it's thing? They're in the quarantine tank and out of the terrible water now. Hopefully everyone else around the area is having a bit more luck. I feel super stupid today and been annoyed without the internet for days (it blew up) so I haven't been able to ask any stupid questions.
  11. I use a lot of 100 and 200w heaters, but I do agree about the brand thing. It's like anything. You get what you pay for. I'd rather pay more and get more life out of it and peace of mind.
  12. None of the fish in the tank have colouring even slightly similar, it's possible, but still a mystery. He's so incredibly cute whatever happened. :happy2:
  13. Awesome! It's always a nice surprise! I'm excited because today I found a little yellow wagtail platy in a big swarm of swordtail fry that are always present in one of our tanks haha. Super excited because my platys are orange and a browny red colour and way too old, so he can't be the product of a random male in the shop. Don't know how he happened. Congrats!
  14. By the way, we're keen to organise a hunt in the summer as it's a wee bit cold down here now, a lazy 4 degrees in the mornings, a bit cold for some I would assume. It's about half an hours drive from our house. Will try and sort something out if a lot of people are keen. BBQ and molly hunt?
  15. I tested the temperature when we were there too, it's about 30 degrees, possibly more in some areas. I kinda fell in (can't help being permanently clumsy  ) so I can tell you that even in shoes the mud is HOT! Haha! I've got them in a tank with lots of salt, temperature sits at about 29.
  16. Depending on where you are in Auckland we could bring some next time we're up (next month hopefully). They're maybe just under half size, mostly male it seems. It's hard to tell if they're green or colourless, they have this irridecent purpley grey shimmer to them. All in amazing condition, the swamp really must be good for them!
  17. I use those little round 200ml pots like the ones you get at the supermarket, weatbix (it seems to work wonders and we always have them in the cupboard), edmonds active yeast and then I throw them in the hot water cupboard and you get a culture in two days max. Smaller containers mean the whole container is covered every day which means the swordtail, cherry barb, platy, guppy, molly and danio fry all get a good feed (there's always heaps of worms!) I usually change it when it gets manky and there's not so many worms maybe every month or so. I'm lazy and it went super gross and they still managed to survive and make two awesome new cultures (lucky because you can't buy more here!).
  18. I prefer dark, because the colours of the fish tend to look better and it doesn't look as dirty as lighter sand. Boyfriend has just changed his sand so it's lighter and it looks good but all the gunk makes it look messy so quickly.
  19. I lived under Mt Ruapehu for the first 12 years of my life and we always had a pond. It used to freeze over quite often in winter as the temperature would be below zero most mornings. Never lost a fish except when the mountain erupted. The ice would be so thick some days that I could go to school and it would still be melting when I got home. The secret is comets. You cannot possibly kill them with cold. They are awesome fish. I'd be more concerned about your veges feeling the cold. I've just put in my winter garden here, waiting for the first frost to see how well everything goes. Never had a winter in Taupo, but i'm guessing it's not half as bad as Ohakune.
  20. That is so wrong! I can't believe they'd ask you that. I would have done the exact same thing!
