  1. I've got about 300kgs of tank on mine and it hasn't fallen though, but it is above a wall. I would say it varies a lot depending on the design of the structure and where you want to place it, A structural engineer would be the only one who could give a qualified opinion.
  2. Ballast was about 200 with my discount. It uses a digital interface and is designed for building automation and connection to a computer so is dearer than the one I intended to use that uses an analogue interface to control the dimming. (was supplied wrong so I took it, but dose allow for more control options) The analogue one would be about 130 ish end caps were about $6 for 4
  3. Thanks, I'm using a twin electronic ballast that will also operate with non high output tubes (21W) with touch dimming control (Push button) made by Osram I also needed to change the end caps to suit the T5 lamps and completely rewire the hood. The hood still looks like the stock Aquaone hood from the outside. Normal electronic ballasts / ECG can't and won't dim, a specialized ballast is required The tubes are the Hagen brand Cheers
  4. I have completely removed my T8 lighting from my Aquaone AR980 that being 2X30W (6500K & 8000K) and 1X25W (15000K) lamps. I now have 2 X 39W T5HO (power-glo and life-glo lamps) These are dimmable from about 10% to 100% (Less than 10% the high output lamps become unstable.) This is the tank with all 3 of the old lamps on This is the tank with the 2 39W T5HO at 100% brightness 50% (approx) both lamps still on 35% (approx) both lamps on 10% (approx) both lamps on. I still need to make and fit some reflectors so efficiency should improve some more. As a bonus the whole hood has lost about 3KGs with the removal of the old control gear. I still can get 1 more lamp in there but would need to install a fan. Lamps are soft starting with no or little flicker and dim up to 100% in about 1.5sec. I still need to add some components to lengthen my dimming time as well as controlling the air pump and future CO2. I have some undisclosed other features I want to add to it in the coming months  Hopefully my plants grow better.
  5. Howdy, you seem to have this multiple tank syndrome thing too
  6. These are new sheets http://www.trademe.co.nz/Building-renov ... 893010.htm likely out of your price range but if you looked around you maybe able to get some packing sheets or 2nds
  7. You should see if you can find some poly panel (stuff they build cool stores out of) and use that for your wall, instant wall and it's pre-insulated.
  8. Intriguing, Isn't it the males who give birth?
  9. Your ballast will need to go a close as possible to the lamp, leads usually a max of 1M for hot end and 1.5M for the other end, the shorter the better. You will also need an enclosure for it too. I'd recommend have an electrician do this.
  10. Their normal diet is the New Life discus formula that I soak and feed in the morning late afternoon and mid evening; a bit more in the weekends. 3 of them will guts the stuff all day if I'd let them. The blood worms are only fed once in a while. Beef heart just a normal cow heart from the butcher? Cheers
  11. I have 4 discus ranging in size from about 70mm - 140mm head to tail, the three smaller ones will eat any thing I feed them but the largest one (Only had for 4 days) will only eat blood worms, I've tried the New Life spectrum stuff that I feed mostly of, discus tucker, JBL grano colour in the click container, sera discus granules, flakes, cichlid crumbles. Anything except blood worms, the fish just spits out. I don't think it's sick but just acting like a spoiled child . Anything else I could try or should it become less picky once it settles in more? Cheers
  12. come to think of it I had the same problem, spent about an hour on the phone to sort it You will be fluent in Filipino soon
  13. click residential cable, PDQ....ect enter login details then click the account. speaking french while hitting F5 helps too when it say page can't be found
  14. That's what I was thinking, a poltergeist. Or some new type of under water spider
  15. you can dim fluros, i've installed hundreds of them, mostly used in the chicken industry (they require a special ballast). It was the chicken industry work I do that gave me the idea, where the computer will gradually bring the lights on and off over a period of time so the birds settle better. As an electrician it wouldn't be hard for me to do.
  16. Just wondering if anyone dims their lamps or would if they could, I'm considering doing away with the 3 T8s in my hood and cramming a few T5s in there, and maybe dimming them on and off to simulate sunrise & sunset. It would have no other purpose other than effect and maybe not startle the fish when lights turn on and off. thoughts?
  17. Temp is 28.5 only moves +/-0.5 during the day. Both discus are all good now and eating like horses. I think since my plants haven't yet bushed up much it was a case of hypoxia with a lack of O2. cheers
  18. just got home from work and the fish has come back to life a bit quiet but eating, even the little one is eating more now after hiding for 5 days. i will salt them for good measures. cheers
  19. Hi, came home for lunch to fined 1 of mine new discus flapping on it's side at the top of the tank, it was fine last night / this morning and seemed to be eating well (like a horse) I have 1 other discus who's behavior has not changed, has been hiding since saturday when i got them and eating little. There are also rummy nose tetras and BNCs in the tank, the tetras are breathing quite fast so i have put in an air stone, the BNCs seem fine. temp is 28c ammonia 0 nitrite 0 nitrate >10 ph 6.4 1/3 water change every day. Is this likely a lack of O2 (I have several small plants) or could the fish be constipated as i haven't seen it do it's business? (even now the other slightly smaller discus seems more active than it had been) sick one is about 70 - 80mm tall (fin to fin) smaller is about 65mm as i say it had been doing quite well in the past few days i have had them, and i hope my weeks of preparation don't go to waste. Is there anything else i should/could do? thanks in advance.
  20. .... when you put a steel beam under the floor so you can get a bigger tank.
  21. Thanks for that, I can stop scratching my head now.
  22. Hi, I just bought a bag of rummy nose tetras and found this stray, I can't find a picture on the net to ID it with. It has the same shape body as a glow light. So if anyone can tell me the model of this tetra it would be much appreciated. Cheers
  23. Indeed, but if you spend a little more you you can have an rcd that wont need resetting after a power cut that happens the day after you go on holiday. Note: a portable RCD (the plug in type) is designed to cut the circuit when supply power is lost and has to be manually turned on / reset when the supply is restored, however a sw/bd mounted rcd or rcd wall socket will stay latched during a power cut and won't need resetting (unless there is a downstream fault). If you are fine with resetting the rcd every time the power goes off the a plugin / portable one is fine. Other wise I would recommend a combination rcd outlet such as: PDL 691RCD30 http://www.pdl.co.nz/product-details.aspx?rcat=products&catid=0&id=914 but you are right, there is no price for a life
