  1. Plugin RCDs have to be manually reset after their power supply has been disconnected, ie: after a power cut. A fitted RCD outlet would be better, but they are expensive.
  2. Tube flickering = faulty tube Tube ends glowing = faulty stater New tube and starter still not going = call an electrician Beware of tubes that glow at the ends without striking (as in a faulty stater) as a higher current is running though the ballast than normal, thus the ballast heats up (a lot) more. If nothing is done about it, over time the ballast may fail or at worst cause a fire.
  3. In need of a prune I think http://www.tuncalik.com/2009/07/my-aquariums-at-home-july-2009/
  4. Cheers guys I have poured in a bottle of Start Smart that is supposed to the bees knees so I was told, this stuff looks like the sludge in the bottom of the old filter that I though was just dirt build up, may be I should have poured that into the canister
  5. Hi guys Filter is brand new and washed out with hot water and air dried. I put the noodles from the original hood filter mixed with the new ones in the bottom 2 baskets, so the original filter is not going. Tank temp set at 25 but has been around 27, is now at 24.3 after w/c I have done a 30% w/c, will do another one later. One of the dead neons has a ruptured chest and i don't think i crushed it under a rock either . I have a quarantine tank set up with a pearl gourami in it filled with 3/4 water from the main tank before the new filter when on but it's not cycled yet, I thought of putting the other fish in here not sure if the sick fish will harm the pearl, and it's only 40L other than the filter, and the 10 glowlights and 2 rams I got on Sunday, nothing has changed Cheers
  6. Hi everyone. Yesterday I installed a CF1200 canister filter on my AR980. Now half of my neons and glowlights are dead or dying, and my dwarf gaurami has little interest in food (normally pigs out). But I have 2 blue rams and BNC fry who seem to be fine Also in the tank are 3 x redtail sharks (all alive but dominant one not as active) Male & female BNC (female was trying to jump out then going down and blowing bubbles out of her gills. I have a pearl gourami that I moved to a quarantine tank just after I got the new filter on (Had been scrapping with the dwarf and has a damaged fin) he seems fine apart from going dull in colour from the move, he is still eating. lastnight ammonia was 0.25 - from adding fish a few days before i thought Nitrite 0.0 Nitrate less than 10 PH 6.4 (no change) KH 0 Then did a 50l water change Tank has lots of plants but i have put an airstone in to see if that helps. And help greatly appreciated, Cheers
  7. Cheers for the welcome guys, My tank's almost cycled now so I'm off fish shopping in the weekend

    G'day

Thought it was about time I said hi, I have an AR980 with 12 neons and 3 RTS, (apparently 3 is ok?) and a heap of plants. The tank is 4 weeks into cycling (with no losses) I'm wanting to build it up to a community tank and add a bristlenose catfish, a dwarf gaurami and maybe something else, any ideas? Fish keeping is being quite addictive and I think I'm going to need a bigger house. This is a vary informative and quite useful site you guys have. Cheers, Aaron
  9. Ha sorry mate, they appeared to have small legs in the shop and resembled something like a small shrimp, maybe i need glasses.
  10. Well then, at this stage the snail's on death row
  11. Looking at the one in my tank, it could well be one of those, it's quite small, most of the ones at the LFS were hard too see properly. will wait and see when it grows, Cheers
  12. Nope, found one of them too, shell is shaped like an ice cream cone
  13. Hi, I bought some plants in the weekend from the LFS. The tanks they keep the plants in have fish in as well, most of their thank have a large number of small shell fish with a spiral shell about 10mm long and small legs out the front, I have since noticed 1 or 2 of these in my tank after planting, they are about the size of a grain of rice and seem to climb up the glass. Question 1, What could they be, and 2, are they any sort of pest and should I vacuum them up? Cheers
  14. Cheers for the words of wisdom, I now have 1.0ppm of ammonia and have been changing about 10% of the water for the last few days to keep it at about 1.0, no nitrites yet. But now the tank (mainly the filter) has a fungus like smell, also there are what appear to be little mould balls floating around, I have been netting these out as they appear. Will this go away in its own accord as my tank cycles or do I need add something? replace filter pads maybe? I have reduced the amount of food given but it seems persistent. Thanks in advance.
  15. thanks for the replies, I shall continue as i have been, cheers Great site by the way
  16. Hi, I have a new AR980 that has had 12 neon tetras (as recommended by 2 fish shops to cycle with because they are cheep) in for 6 days now and i have no ammonia showing at all, NO2 & NO3 are zero also. PH is 6.4, was above 7. Temp is 25c Tank has had 1 dosing of Stress Zyme From what I have read, I should have seen some ammonia on about day 3, All 12 fish are happy. Is this normal for a tank of this size, or do I need alter something? Thanks in advance.
