  1. Shrimps also love peas, and you could squash a pond snail for them too. I haven't known a shrimp to turn it's whiskers up at anything it could find.
  2. I didn't think algae harmed fish but the others will know. Do you have a photo of it?
  3. it's still very warm in there in the morning when I go in at present and the heaters will go back on at the end of summer anyway
  4. WCMM will breed on their own quite easily but *usually* if you make an effort to move the adults out then more of the eggs and fry survive. If the plants and moss are really dense then you wouldn't need to do that so much. There definitely needs to be some sort of moss or plants for them to spawn in, I don't consider that to be special treatment.
  5. they are good, I had one of those, currently have a 2006 in 2 of my little tanks.
  6. Aaron, what sort of filter are you using?
  7. welcome newbie if you use the search and put in keyword shrimp and my name as the author you should find some pictures of my previous shrimp inhabitants. I've had them in warm and cold water, in with the other fish in my tank and just in with bugs caught in the same stream.
  8. Yes they do but I wanted to be sure that they wouldn't come on at all at the other end of the scale, who knows what these things are calibrated for exactly. It still gets a bit warm in there so I keep the door open for air circulation when possible.
  9. Danval, read an earlier post, some cats cannot be contained in that manner, it does not suit their personalities and their behaviour becomes intolerable. Take him to the vet and have him put down then I hear someone suggest, try getting a vet to put down a cat that isn't dying - they won't do it. If I had a cat that liked to be inside all his life, I would do as BBP does too, but you just don't know what sort of cat you will get unless you have it from kittenhood and it's been raised well that far. Some cats like to go out, some don't. Even if you get a well behaved cat it still behaves as it pleases. One neighbour's cat had a bell and he learned to become even more stealthy and still catch birds. I think that is the major difference between owning a cat instead of a dog, and people who don't love cats don't seem to get it. Part of the reason we like cats is because they are their own bosses, they do as they please and are independant. We like to have an animal that is supposedly free to go but still comes back because it makes us feel good. No doubt the haters will use this information to criticise further but that is the fact.
  10. 3 tanks in the garage are sitting at about 22 degrees during the day, turned the heaters off as they were getting up to 28 in there. No ventilation in the garage and there is a window and tin roof warming it all up

If I ever do a saltwater tank it will be a native marine so I can catch the critters myself.
  12. it's not the done thing to lend a husband to another male... you will lose credits with your own missus :dnc1: I thought I'd get a bit of wire and screw it to the top edge, sit the pot inside so it's bottom is in the water. sort of like this but much more DIY UNLESS I ask my husband if I can borrow his drill, in which case he would rather do it himself properly than look at my efforts. :sage:
  13. it's an 80L plastic box from Bunnings and my husband built a surround for it to keep the sun off.

You are right, as usual. Though if there is enough space in a freshwater tank the plants will keep creeping along doing planty things, there just isn't any freshwater coral or anemones that look like a living fixture.
  15. bah you're right :phb: I thought I could get some lysmachia from the shop but I think that the top half will crumple in the bright sunlight and die off. I've found some hydrocotyle on TM and various weeds in a nearby stormwater creek so I may pillage some of that instead. Don't think I want hygrophilia as it gets too big.

have a break :smln: Just had my first swim of summer :dnc1:
  17. I must have it the wrong way round. I thought submersed was completely under water and emmersed was only part way. You have answered my question anyway
  18. Can you buy a plant that has been emmersed and then plant it only half under the water? I've been trying to get hold of a pond plant or 2 and I wonder if I could buy some lysmachia that is clearly all under the water, and then plant it so the bottom half is in a pot under the water and with the top sticking out in the sunshine? I want to plant something in my bugtopia pond that comes out of the water and creates a bit of interest and shade. At the moment I have 2 fake lily pads that take up less than a quarter of the surface area, some duckweed that is struggling in the sunlight and long term I wouldn't keep it, a few strands of oxygen weed under the water, and some stargrass that isn't doing much yet. It gets blanket weed so I'm wanting to cover more of the surface.
  19. me too - for my bugs pond top up and black worms I leave a bucket with no additives out overnight and use that. When there is rain I use rain water with no additives for my rasboras and CPDs. For tap water I used to use API Stresscoat but this time around have switched to Prime, and I use barely any as it is more concentrated and my tanks are small. I don't know if one does a better job than another.
