  1. Yeah when I kept killies I had salt in the water as I was told they are OK or prefer it and I think it was useful because they were forever bashing themselves on things in their love-scuffles. Since I got catfish though I stopped it and have no sort of chemical in the water other than the chlorine removing stuff.

You've gone crazy Dan, either that or you've sent your children to work on fishing boats to fund your fishkeeping :rotf:

  4. Some reading on levamisole http://www.loaches.com/Members/shari2/levamisole-hydrochloride-1 Just wondering what others think of this stuff, I see some are already using it. I am *thinking* of worming my loaches to see if I can get the 2 skinny ones to fatten up a bit.
  5. The sound of the cars driving past while I wait for the end of the working day.... :yaw1:
  6. I don't know if the female is laying eggs but I haven't seen any fry. There are plenty of places for fry to hide if they did make it past egg stage. There are 3 that are fat slug shape loaches and 2 that are long eel shaped so I think 3 females and 2 males. Not sure why Mr Skinny is skinny - as I said before his personality is more alert than the others a lot of the time and I suspect he is a male and more nervous than the others. There is another one that is thinner than the fat ones too, but not as skinny as Mr S. I read on the loach forum that it can be caused by worms but I haven't seen any signs of that other than weight, and I haven't dosed the tank. I have seen him graze over the food without eating it, and at other times hungry and chasing it so I think it is a social issue rather than a health one, but who knows. I am just guessing really. I would be sad to lose Mr Skinny as he has a lot of personality, I should probably get some wormer and give it a go.
  7. I have 2 tropical tanks - 1 is about 25-28litres and the other is about 35litres. I have lots of small fish in them. The Fish Police might only let me have 1 or 2 goldfish in a tank of those sizes because like Josh said, they are poop machines. It's not just about the fish having room to move but having lots of water to live and breathe in. The more water the better generally but there are things you can get away with if you are very careful and are good at maintaining the water quality in your tank.
  8. ahhh for hands free siphon I have a hole drilled in the bucket big enough to put a cable tie through, and on the inside of the bucket is a little piece of hose. The cable tie goes through the hole, around the hose, and back out the hole, then closes on the outside of the hole and is locked in place by the end that is bigger than the hole. The siphon hose then feeds through the short bucket hose and always pours straight into the bottom of the bucket. ta daaaaaaaaaaa :smot:
  9. I had 2 loaches and they were OK but hid a fair bit. Got 2 more, they were more active but still a bit hidey. Got 1 more to make 5 and they are now out and about most of the time. It was like someone switched a light on that said 'now we are brave and do anything'. Pygmies are also very cute.

  11. there are fat spherical ramshorns that grow to and past the size of a coin, and there are ramshorns that are round and flat and brown that don't get much bigger than about 5mm. I have the latter and squash them against the glass for them to eat so I know the snail is gone. I have a feeling they do also hunt them out a bit as I am not getting many elsewhere in the tank. I haven't had fry in with my loaches but I imagine like any fish they will anything that fits in their mouth. Saying that, a guppy fry that lives past a week or so is probably a bit big for them to eat.
  12. Yes I have a really fat one and a really skinny one. 2 other fatties in between but are not as long as the biggest fattie. I can tell who is who most of the time.
  13. it seems your toenails have stopped the thread........... show me more kitties! :happy2:

  18. That would be a good idea but I would need an arm span of about 4 metres long, my tank is a little high off the ground for that to work for me, even if I put the bucket on a chair. Often what I do is wave the bottom end around enough to scare them off and stir up the bottom so I can pick up the oto poop. :happy2:

  20. Mr Skinny the loach played a trick on me yesterday. I did a water change early morning and didn't count how many were there. Later in the morning I realised there were 4 instead of 5. I hunted in all the nooks I knew of and couldn't see Mr Skinny, I figured he was inside the log where I can't see. At about 5pm I checked again and he was still not there so I thought he must have died in a wedge somewhere. I got my prodder and a towel and took the lids off to prepare for the mortuary. Though I had looked and looked in the 5 mm behind the filter I hadn't taken it off so I took the top 2 suckers off first and there he was, alive and looking up as if to say 'who asked you?'. I do think he must have been stuck because all day is a long time for a loach to do something on purpose. He could have been stuck there since the night before, as that was the last time I saw him  . Loaches are worse than toddlers!
  21. my, what nice toenails you have Anthony. How often do you visit the farrier? :cofn:
  22. Ssucked up another 2 tiny black fry in the water change today. Haven't seen any of the others grown more yet, not sure where they are, or IF they are still. I did discover a lot of ostracods in the dregs of the water change today while hunting for fry, there is definitely plenty of live food in the tank for the fry aside from what I put in there.
