    HI

2 weeks here Its not to bad here in Aussie, we are very limited on Catties & cichlids. Though there are some goodies around Frenchy
  4. I wouldn't want to strip an African with whats running wild there u strip mouthbrooders as some wont spit in a community tank, they know the fry will get eaten. stripping increases the number of fry from each mouthfull. also as the female dosent has to hold for so long she stays in better condition. as for possible most cichlid breeders do it. oh stripping too. Frenchy
  5. I like to wait to the girls have been holding for 2 weeks. At this stage the fry are free swimming enough & big enough to take baby brine shrimp. I use a cotton bud or a matchstick. But not the tip end!!! I use a container with water from the tank, Catch the female with a net, as quietly as possible, as the female can spit. place her in the container. Hold her gently in one hand, in the water, then with the other hand i use the cotton bud to push down on her bottom jaw, causing her to open her mouth. The babies usually flow out of her mouth, you may have to rock her gently to encourage fry to come out. Once all fry are out I usually place her back into the main tank, others will place her into another seperate tank to condition her back up. Just see how healthy she is. With the fry I use ice cream containers that have been made into floating breeders traps, i empty the fry into the trap which is floating in the tank the female came from. Different water will shock the fry & can kill them. Once you have done this once or twice you will find it very easy to do. I got a friend to strip the first female I had to hold, it is pretty simple to do. There are another couple of ways to strip females but I like to use this one. Hope this helps. Frenchy
  6. Hello Alan, Kelvin,Winnie,Malcolm, Tammy,yourself.... are the ones I like, its the others that bag catfish,discus,tropicals.... just its the attitude some have towards non cichlids. ps; home town, I'm an import Frenchy
  7. Sorry for posting twice, gday Alan hows it going?? I have since bought 5 more peppermints of Tammy, better price this time. Frenchy
  8. Midas is right about the red devils, they are a mixture here too. I have festaes, 5 of them growing up nicely in a 6 footer, I have a definate m & f, dont know about other 3 , still only midgets. cichlids are big here nothing on USA, while there is nothing on the allowable list here, what we have in the country is really good I picked up some altolamprologus compressiceps; mutondwe"gold heads" during the week. very nice, while we dont get the catties for the price you's do,(not on allowable list, but still attainable) Ill take the cichlids anyday. Frenchy
  9. hello people, Pics 1 & 3 are Aulonocara's , the thing is there are a shit load of variants, when buying africans it pays to get the variant, eg; pic 3 looks like an eureka red. Pic 2 is a Sciaenochromis ahli, electric blue. pic4 is a Labidochromis, electric yellow last pic is a Copadichromis borleyi, these are late bloomers. So as stated before could be m or f. All are lake Malawi & the only mbuna is the electric yellow. The Julies (marlieri) are from Lake Tanganyika. Sweet pics too. 8) Frenchy
  10. They retail here for $60 each or $100 for 2, at 3 to 5 cm. Bit cheaper if you can knock out the middle man. Frenchy

  12. Have a look at this; be hard to get the bristles out of your teeth... http://pub79.ezboard.com/fperthcichlids ... =144.topic Frenchy
  13. Are there many discus keepers in NZ?? Are there many types available?? Do they come from Thailand or Malayasia??? I have just picked up a breeding pair of Red Turqs. growing up a group of red melons...plus a couple of odds & ends. I sorced these from guys who import from here; some cool pics http://www.absolutediscus.com Frenchy
  14. I have American only now.. gone against the trend. I have discus, festaes, salvinis. The only Africans I have left are all the fry. Frenchy
  15. Thanks Dark, made for good reading. I wont post up what I found no need to bore yous if this isnt in the country....from what I found out its a bit to strong for fish to handle(too much of a good thing) Frenchy
  16. Sorry pies I should off added. A well known discus breeder in Brissie had his discus(proven breeders) go sterile for 8 months. Seems when fish come off the food, they die, look ratsht...... I will add what I found out about the chemicals later on. The reason it is here in Aussie, is an importer brought it in & then sold it to other stores, most tried it for a while, & only a few shops in brisbane & none on the gold coast still use. I did a couple of trail days for this company & had to fish out dead Goldfish & trophies full of bloat.. money before the well being of the fish  Frenchy ps; cheers Dark, Ill have alook at the sites...
  17. Cheers Caryl, Im suprised that if it is here in Aussie & being made in Thailand, why it hasnt hit your shores??? I have tried sites in usa & europe, dosent seem to be there either. This product is also high in protein. A well known discus breeder here had his go sterile for 8 months I do get a few bad stories from it each week at work. Alot of shops here have tried it, but only a few keep using it now. Seems to be the bigger stores I suppose they can afford to lose a few fish here & there. I just think its a shame , anything to try & make a $$$. The 1 store I went to I busted them fishing out Trophies & goldfish, all with bloat. It's "good" when the company that makes the product, cant or won't give out any info. Frenchy :-?
  18. This comes in pellet & granule form. Trust me Matthew this stuff S@#ts all over live food & other colour inhances. It colours up juvie cichlids & even makes girls look like Males. Made in asia. Just concerns here are that it sends Females sterile. Some lfs use this as it is easy to sell 3 to 4 cm coloured up cichlids(eg; electric blue) It has high levels of PSB & also contains,ADP & Astaxanthin.Anyone know anything about these chemicals. Frenchy
  19. An element in wood. lignin is an essential part of a bristles diet. So people try & "stick" with wood. Gee cant be that hard to find a piece. Frenchy
  20. Do yous have a food product there called super g, or white crane. (same thing) It is a colour inhancing food. I am just trying to find out some info on it. It is a touchy subject here , as there are alot of bad stories about it. Frenchy.
  21. Hi all, I am just wondering what type of cichlids everyone keeps "Back Home" Frenchy
  22. Catbrat came up page can not be found... Frenchy
  23. ps; I think Pegasus has some good info on this sort off thing somewhere. People here cheat by using products like "Easy Life fluid filter medium" & "Geo Liquid" Frenchy
  24. if you are keen on cichlids, & would just like a large pair, go American. The choice is up to you, find what you would like to look at. We all have different tastes. eg;I have Salvinis, festaes, discus, ghostknifes(non cichlid) yet others like red devils, Jags, firemouths, jack dempseys...... Then again it depends on what yous have on offer in NZ too. frenchy
  25. The tank isnt cycled properly by the sounds of it, how big is the tank?? I am right in saying that is was only cycled 1 week??? I never rely on products to help solve problems, they tend to help but never really prevent or stop if there are problems. I instead try & use proper practises. Constant water changes & the like. Have you done any water changes since you first set up??? With a new tank, especially with a short cycling period. Constant little water changes are needed to prevent nitrate/ammonia levels becoming a problem. So yes do a thorough water change, followed up with constant little changes till the levels are nil again. I wouldnt be adding anything new for a while yet too. Frenchy
