  1. I would say cross breed, hybrid... Frenchy
  2. Bit bizarre that one tank has dropped & the others haven't. The reason the tank has dropped if the water isn't soft out of the tank is through the additions of acids into a tank will lower the pH in the tank water. These acids come from several sources, the primary ones being: (1) excess carbon dioxide (CO2) from respiration caused by lack of sufficient gas exchange (2) nitric acid from biological filtration (nitrification), and (3) organic acids from metabolic wastes. The generally accepted "tried and true" method for stabilizing pH is still performing regular partial water changes in your tank. This not only refreshes the natural buffers, but also restores the trace minerals in your tank water. Of course, reducing the causes of the drop in pH is always wise. Removing all uneaten foods and fish waste from the tank on a regular basis will go a long way toward retarding the pH drop. When you do water changes you could try adding some epsom salts, bicarb soda & a little salt. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/buffer_recipe.php ps; as a note if you are going to raise the ph, eg; by buffers always do this with a water change, & raise the water gradually. 3. Do you have any other mbuna in the tank, especially zebra type species. That will be my first stab. What is in the tank with her? What colour is she & or what made you think she was a he? Frenchy
  4. If you click on the link there is another photo of the cobwe where the reds eyes are plan as for all to see. No one else will listen to me  Frenchy
  5. Yep different typees of fronnies are now importable legally. They are at a larger size, so with the right contacts getting what you want is made easier. You going to live in Bundi? well thats is a 4 hour drive from here. Let Brad or myself know your details, what you want....closer to the date, we{mainly Brad} should be able to help you out. Frenchy
  6. Sorry I could never call it Jade Stadium. I watched every sheild challenege in the 80's era{even the one against I thin Hawkes Bay when it pissed down} & I was lucky enough to have played a rugby game on there too. {Curtain Raiser to Fiji game} Trying to think of the radio station that made up a few songs{the old 3ZB maybe?}, one was "Give it a boot Robbie" I used to play cricket for Lancaster Park, 92-97. Used to train in the south grounds. Dosen't exist now. I did manage to play a few first grade games. Again lucky enough to have played a couple of games with Chris Cairns. So to me no matter what they call it, its Lancaster Park. Frenchy
  7. Sorry to reply to myself, but then I saw this An albino protomelas, I didn't ask what type. Frenchy
  8. Albino Afra Cobue Here it is on aqua bid, got passed in to at $101 too, reserve not met. I would say that is yankie $$$ too. http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/closed.cgi?view_closed_item&fwcichlidsmmb1151516968 Very nice fish all the same. I would of bought it, breed it back against normal females, raise the off spring, bred them back against dad or other siblings.... Frenchy
  9. Cheers for that. ps; How is everything going? I heard a rumour via Brad, is it true? Frenchy
  10. But I am not an Aussie, :-? & never will be. 8) OK I confess I did support the soccerroos, but we are so useless at soccer{Solomons beat us in qualification for petes sake} what else was I supposed to do, please forgive me fellow kiwis... Go the AB's & the Crusaders, & the merged Lancaster Park/ WWMC Cricket clubs, Technical soccer club.... Frenchy
  11. If you think you have to many fish & feeding twice a day, get your water tested just in case. My believe is if the tank is well filtered & aerated then the fish will be fine. {if its a bac bloom} Frenchy
  12. I am sorry to say but I agree with Mystic, Cross breeds perhaps? Heres a good pic of one Frenchy
  13. I have placed up the odd helpful{hopefully} link of late. Really what I should of done is linked everyone to this page  http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/ Enjoy... Frenchy
  14. Brad your a suck  Thats the worse load of dribble I have read in years. All I ever here from you is; the kiwis are nothing but imbreed, sheep shagging dumbies, who know nothing about fish keeping & couldn't play sport to save their lives. Really though, I think thats the difference between Aussie & NZ, NZers are the ones who on the whole are more laid back, keen to help out his fellow person. It isn't point scoring; it's "what do I know that could help out." :bounce: I visit Brad a times a week at his work, we have our chats, bounce ideas... I thought Brad would like this site, as he is more a, "I like forums so I can learn, bounce ideas, help out..." Rather than I just want to sell stuff, read, otherwise there is nothing in it for me. I spend more time here on this well run forum than I do on the main 2 forums I visit in Aussie. Then there are others in Aussie I don't even look at anymore {need a yawning emoticon} I know I can be a bit, ummm, well yeh. :-? I just try to call it how I see it & there are a couple of beefs that rub me up the wrong way. How cool would that be. 8) xxxx yuck, Bourban here Alan  Is there anything you would like to look at while you are here? In Aussie, wholesale live stock is basically a dunopoly. We should be able to organise a tour of one that is in North Brisbane. Or even a lfs tour, well the better ones.. Although there is heaps to do other than fish of course; like drinking, drinking & more drinking. I finally got hold of my friend who is killi fanatic. Bad news, he had to give it up last year, Lung Cancer, which explains the not seeing him for a while. He did give me the name of another fella, who I don't really know, still see what I can do. Frenchy
  15. I think the comments above are spot on. How do you clean the filters? Another cause, what is your fish load, feeding habits, etc. High fish load with overfeeding is a cause of cloudy water too. Chemical imbalance is another reason, but unlikely, as usually occurs in harder water. Get your water tested for ammonia, nitrites..., don't feed the fish tomorrow, then cut right back to bloom clears, small water changes 20% will help clear tank quicker, {as mentioned above} If it is a bacterial bloom,{appears as a greyish haze} don't stress to much, harmless to fish. If the test shows high ammonia.... then bigger water changes are needed. Frenchy
  16. Also check the carbonate hardness of the water out of the tap. Becareful when raisng the ph, this should only be done wih water changes. Frenchy
  17. Caryl, I am going to have to try to stop agreeing with you, but once again I have to.  If you like cichlids, electric yellows are a good seller. The humble Bristlenose, will pump out a heap to, don't have to look at the rare catties there either. Theres just 2 examples Frenchy
  18. You could try these fourms, I hate to plug other forums. :-? http://www.aceforums.com.au/index.php?act=idx or http://www.qldcichlid.com/modules.php?name=Forums Frenchy
  19. oh dear!!! Third time lucky when you fill up next. Frenchy
  20. There are restrictions here to on drugs too. Metro is a restricted drug here too, I am lucky to of found a couple who will give out limited supplies. As in the first time, I took a book in with a picture & descritpion of the disease, I said the fish is to sick to move, took photo of fish with me. {Discus} I made sure I knew what I was talking about, as in named the symptons, what the fish looked like, named the terms.....They never charged me with a consultation fee, as he laughed at the fact I knew more about it than him. He did say he was meant to see the fish, but how will authorities know he didn't? It was all recorded, easy done. The other vet, turns out to be regular of Brads family & mine{dogs, cats....} they are nice people. They believe Brad knows what he is talking about  Will give him very limited doses. So see if you can find a friendly vet, you may be lucky. I was lucky first time around. I was working for a lfs, knew the name of a fish vet guru{now living in Tassy} & my boss at the time knows fish diseases by scientific name{geek lol} Try your luck.... Frenchy
  21. Oh no so sad to read. I have said this before, my pet hate with this hobby is the electrical gadgets we use. I try & buy the dearer heaters, but even one of them has a 2 degree swing. {Judging by the thermometer.} Some days 25.5 degrees, other days 27.5 degrees. Always one or the other never inbetween. :-? Daytime temperature been constant lately too. I also try my best to go the 1w{or slightly less} to 1lt rule or so if one did stick on, I will hopefully catch it in time. I have lost a few fish to a faulty heater a few years back & Lake Tangy's are so touchy to high temps. I just hope Caryl, it isn't the old saying of "happens in 3's Frenchy
  22. Flies, nah you have to go bush to find them in plague numbers, or down in Melbourne Just watch out for the snakes, spiders, mozzies, ticks..... Frenchy
  23. Very nice, be a really active tank that one Frenchy
  24. I never excused the low numbers either. They are probably on the decrease as of lack of food, over fished, developed more smarts... Probably also turning on themselves especially if it is the first reason. Common trend amongst predators. ps; Alan, I haven't forgotten by the way. Brad is away in Sydney this weekend, so I will see him within the next few days & get back to you. & I will try to find some killie fanatics, hmm thats a mission & a half lol. Frenchy
  25. I am with Bill on this one. I would take the angels out, place them into a bucket with the other tank water & an airate the water. Towel over bucket too. Rinse the filter out well, place in other tank & run. Empty water out of the tank completely. Rinse the gravel out in a bucket, how? As Bill said boiling water. I would boil up a large pot of water. And pour it into the gravel, cook the snails at the same time. {yummy }I would do this a few times. Swirling the water around, leave to sit for a few minutes each time. Then run a hose threw the gravel until water becomes clear. Hopefully taking the coked snails & any "rubbish" left behind in the gravel. Or follow the first part & buy new gravel, then do the last step. Your angels won't get any better to yo do something about it. Buy a good neutraliser that helps promote slime coat growth, or add a little salt to the water.{1tbsp/80litres} When you fill your tank back up use some water out of already exixting tank. Frenchy
