  1. Classic Warren, Yes it is chlorine from bleach. I was worried about potential reactions, being a nursery worker I had dirty boots(now clean) there was dirt in the pond, also a few non sealed painted items in there 2. No fish in there just a water feature. Chlorine is to kill the algae, & anything within a 3 metre radius. Body is umm "very" sore still, which I expected and can cope with. Its the sore lungs that are a concern, never had that before. Worked yesterday & today. Very light duties. Left early today, running out of breath, work isn't that important. So resting up for 2 days, work 1 day, then 2 more days off. Good timing Easter. Cheers for the kind words. Frenchy
  2. Is no good for humans either I got rushed to hospital today from work. Then spent 6 hours laid out in hospital. 3hrs of which in emergency, with multiple probes  attached to me, then 3hrs in observation. The doctors & staff were great apart from they didn't believe the ammonia part and cant get that from bleach. :-? One of the ambo drivers had a brain wave(ripple) about a silicone ingesting theory. The old lick the finger to run a smooth line, is deadly he reckons. Never seen one in all me years in fish. What about hanging over a water feature/pond filled with bleach, trying to fix up for a customer, few hours too? I found a lovely med page on the net, http://www.mednets.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/articles_ammonia_poisoning_and_exposure_toxicology-Ammonia strange how all symptons line up. Q??? Is it to much to walk in to A & E tomorrow, and hand those papers over? Especially the 2 twits that laughed at me, while I laying there hopelessly telling them why. Then again using fish  as an example silly me! Must be hard spending 6 years at uni sinking piss. For 3 hours, I couldn't breath properly at all, on oxygen. My left arm, couldn't move at all, constantly cramped up. Right arm could move just a little, cramps in all limbs, pins & needles all limbs. Blood pressure was doing its best to impersonate a rollercoaster. The heart was a different ride but, just as thrilling. Shot up to 190bpm stayed there a while, then took his bloody time coming down. Swollen & sore tounge, dryest mouth, eyes were bit fuzzy & body was just like holly f... Then again sounds like a good saturday night. Body is really sore now from all the hyper tension, cramps..oh and the 8 hit marks in my right arm he couldn't understand why I couldn't keep still. :-? From doing my own research, it's hard to estimate toxic levels. Or how badly I was affected. Will I suffer down the track. :-? So if this can help 1 other person avoid what I went threw, that will be great. Frenchy
  3. Not unusual for comps not to get stripes. You can always tell the difference between comps & calvus when they are older. Comps are bigger, thicker bodied, shoter heads.. Calvus tend to be longer & skinner, get more spots, hardly any bars. Frenchy
  4. I don't post in this section but I thought some may like the read, some may not.... Anyway story goes like this,(This is Aussie & all retail prices) I remember when albino bristlenose were $300 each. End 2003. Some started pumping numbers out from Melbourne in 2004, price drop to $100 early mid year. End 2004 they were $30 to $60 each. Now they are $15 to $25 each. A lfs got a heap in and sold them for $3.50. Some breeders are kicking up a stink. I can see how they feel hard done by but really stiff arm u know... http://www.qldcichlid.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=3550&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0I think now days u have to be a member to read? What is the price of them over there...and one question, is it true that catties are more easily imported than cichlids. As in on the import list, & why is that, it dont make sense? Yes I know they never do, what is there reasoning? Frenchy
  5. shall do, especially seeing as I am on mates set up. Frenchy
  6. Sorry for brancing of topic, 800lt tank with Cichlids *drools That would be a nice tank to see. What do you have in there? Frenchy
  7. Or you can make your own floating fry trap. Ice cream container, craft knife, some mesh, silicone & poly... Anyone keen?? I will try & find link, or will post up how it is made. Found it, gee that took me a while  http://www.sydneycichlid.com/old_scp/frytank.html Frenchy
  8. The last 3 pics are hybrids too, been breed back to true yellows for so long, they look(shape & colour) like yellows. Frenchy
  9. Electric Yellows are meant to have black markings, Yes I do realise that. Buyer beware, Line bred, scientic names were all terms used to suggest I know they are not yellows at all what do u think they could be? :-? Kribs to the top of the class here, send gold star tomorrow. , yep thats right its a hybrid.(IMO) The shop owner who bought these was told they were called Yellow Yellow's. Which in Perth means electric yellows that have no black. They are meant to be Electric yellows line bred against each other, to have an all yellow fish no black markings. Don't know why they would want to do that in the first place. :-? Now if the average joe saw these in the shop they may note the black. The seller will say oh yes these have been line bred to get rid of the black. If the buyer thought I'll have a few I like them. Take sthem home puts them with his elctric yellows, AGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!! :evil Now people like Krib will go really & go what about the body & head shape, different fin shape, oh also the orange eyes. And the nice bright yellow colour, it isnt, eh bro. Looks like no one went on to read the link either Pretty obvious when placed side by side. Yes Brad it will lower the quality, but some are to late to be safed In Aussie, some (breeder)ba..ard is selling these. Now Canada have prefected the art, What do u think this is??? I remember when Blue peacocks & assorted zebs used to be pretty common in Aussie lfs. We got lucky. A few bright sparks, gave it some thought & smuggled new cichlids into the country, with Genus, species & location/variant attached. Now, Blue zebs/ peacocks have a good home in some LFS's, the freezer or Native display tank. Frenchy
  10. If anyone ever wondered why I ask for scientific names on cichlids then here is one reason. A shop owner here in Qld, was sent some cichlids from Perth. They are meant to be line bred electric yellows. In Perth they call them Yellow Yellow's. (inventive bunch) What do people think these dudes are without checking the rest of the post? What shocked me more is a forum in Canada, that came up during conversation. Hybrids don't concern to much as long as they aren't passed on to others. Why, its to easy for some cichlids to cross breed. I think its best to try & keep what is true. The electric yellows in Australia are average at best. http://www.qldcichlid.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=3334 Frenchy
  11. Isn't she a pretty little convict. Frenchy
  12. cool, well done to mums & yourself. First time strip & all went well. Glad to here. Once you done it a couple of times, becomes easy. That is a great number of fry to especially first up. Frenchy
  13. If she is still holding at 3 weeks, re post up. If need be I can try talk you through stripping...I wouldn't be worried, well actually  with first timers I do check in on them. only once or twice a day though. (touchwood) I have never lost a female from holding to long, but I have seen a few females get pretty thin. Frenchy
  14. Hows that ah. Great timing. I'd say as a guess they probably bred the morning of the move. Just keep an eye on the female the first couple of times she breeds. The mums can starve themselves a bit, first time mums are funny, they really hold down lips shut firm, keep miles away from anything... As they get older they tend to eat enough to keep healthy. The joys of nature. Usually done 3 ways here !) Strip female straight away & have the eggs in a tumbler. 2) Strip female at 2 weeks, this way young are free swimming. Good for those who work. Just mark on tank, calendar the day you noticed holding. 3) Catch the female out of breeding tank & into a holding tank. Let nature take its course. Good for the first couple of times as first time mums are small & hard to hold. Plus this way, females practice holding.. Good luck, hope all goes well, keep us posted. Frenchy
  15. Well from a purist point of view, no. :-? but I have done it before with mixed results, trial & error. If you try mixing africans & americans, you really have to be careful. Different behaviours, food....the biggest concern are the water requirements for each of the fish. If you want to buy yellows. I suggest you find out the hardness, ph of your water. Then find a lfs or breeder who has similar water. The rainbows should do fine also. ps; how big is your tank & how is the tank set up? eg;rocky, wood, mixture..... Frenchy
  16. The good thing is one male will become dominant, the other should stay light,(dull) therefore out of trouble. I agree with them not being "that" agro. When I was breeding them I would have them with another species(colony)Mbuna, protomeleas(if larger sized)... The male used to have his cave & that section of the tank. Most Cichlids are pretty smart...yep, you can have that space, I'll cruise around the rest.. Frenchy
  17. I don't think anyone can answer that question 100%. I have cut open a few cichlids, that have succombed to bloat, I am a believer of Pathogen theory. Protozoal parasite. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/malawi_bloat.php Frenchy
  18. What type of Afra's are they? Frenchy
  19.  Bloody Aussies, they are everywhere now days. {Always wanted to say that, make for a pleasant change} Good chance  it is a Demasoni then, & yes they are very agro. They will give most cichlids its size & bigger a run for its money. {Getting other foot ready} I'd recommend you don't buy cichlids off whoever you got this last one off. If they can't see that it is not a red top zeb, they really don't know their cichlids, or worse customer service skills. By the way what other fish do u have in the tank? Frenchy ps;sorry if I created any confusion lol.
  20. congrats, hopefully she holds full term for you. Frenchy
  21. i would have to say its some sort of cross breed then. :-? Frenchy
  22. looks very similar to demasoni,(do they exist in NZ)would be best to see if it really is. Not real close to a red top... ps;demasoni are very agro too. Frenchy
  23. Thanks everyone, I have had mixed results :-? The 2nd & 3rd batch just all curled over in the space of a night & day. The little buggers just went white. Both sets died at the 2-3 week mark. 1st batch still fine. 1st female laid eggs just after new years, they went off straight away. Then there was nothing to last week, 1st & 2nd female both laid eggs 6 days ago, 1 night apart Altos can be hard buggars to raise. I have previously had no problems with other altos. A mate who has bred a few types, has trouble with his gold head comps & he said his mate in Brissie, has lost the odd batch of white calvus himself for no appearent reason. Just see how they mature, can always do the swap adults around, when others are mature. Frenchy

    help!

Hmm, some exploratory surgey, I'll just go grab my kit...I come with me own nurse(g/f) too. It is hard to say, could be bacterial & the infection has set in and could be now effecting the swim bladder. Judging by the him sitting on the floor. or verse vica Did the wound made a crackling sound when pricked or stoked/touched. then it is a swim bladder disease. Make sure tank is aerated sufficiently. Treat with Quinine Sulfate. my main concern here is when you opened the sore & nothing came out. was the sore red edged? Could be open tb. Seriously I'd take him out, treat him with good anti-biotics. but then again to treat him, way up costs to love of the fish... Frenchy
