  1. They'll come around. Probably half scared of you as they remember you catching them. Frenchy
  2. male single 35 going on 21  Frenchy
  3. Plenty of good suggestions. The only one I wouldn't do is use filter wool. Clogs up to quick, to easily. Once the outer layer has collected a dirt layer water just shots around it, rendering it a waste of space. Frenchy
  4. Are they swimming around with you not there. As in can you do a sneaky peek & see what they are doing without you seeing them. If they are still hiding, apart from checking temp, try a 30% water change just to freshing things up. Frenchy
  5. How are they breathing? ie; heavy or normal? Frenchy
  6. You could of highlighted Coro too, I was thinking more along the lines of Shortland Street. nb; Brad, it's some poor attempt at a program in NZ. A hospital version of Neighbours. Oh mj, I brought it here as I said buyer beware. Also the person in question was stupid enough to mention me & my sidekick. I haven't really had to post in here for ages as others are doing a fine job here & I have been busy. I didn't like the persons answers, the fish are not those that are up for sale. If anyway I stop one person from buying the fish in question then I feel have at least helped one person out. & that is another point of forums. Helping others out. I am really a nice person, its so hard to tell people on line things. So I usually just get straight to the point. Its not like face to face where I can take someone to a fish tank or a referrence book & go see look , now you see. But hey, I have seen a LFS import a cichlid as a red peacock. It looks like a red zeb cross electric yellow. He is selling them off as a variant of tropheops. of course I posted, why. As with these other hybrids, they may introduced to pure lines, then that lineage is stuffed. I have seen to many cases of dodgy cichlids here; ie: Sciaenochromis fryeri, most here have Utaka spots on them. How? cross with lithobates. As for others with Hybrids, each to there own. As long as they are kept on their own. Frenchy
  7. Give yourself a bit more credit Ryan. You have done very well to question the person selling in a way that has got you the not so correct answers. Would of been great if pics of the parents or those others raised to adult hood were shown. Instead of attacks on a person who hasn't posted anywhere really for months to a year. {well done} Well done on the research & asking on a well established foreign forum too. I wouldn't worry to much about upsetting the apple cart. I have done that here & there a few times myself. I just try to call a spade a spade. Its a dodgy enough hobby whether it is by accident or not. The points were well covered by the Mod on cichlidforum. All I will say is that a well respected member of your forum has visited me & seen some of the cronies I hang with. We don't make stupid stabs in the dark. Good luck with it all. Frenchy
  8. It has come to my attention that someone has bought some fish he thinks are a hybrid. This topic has been discussed on the cichlidforum in the states. Where a moderator has confirmed what I thought. So I will just link them both as firstly, funny how I get a mention. 2ndly buyer beware. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=1305498#1305498 http://www.trademe.co.nz/a.aspx?id=208317961 Ryan, why don't ya just post a couple of pics here. What i used to do was post a pic of what one is meant to be, ie; From a rep source like Ad Konnings. Then post 2 up of what you got, facing same way. Then post another of a what is meant to be a real one. Picture says a thousand words, seeing as some doesn't rate my ability, I then don't have to say a thing. Frenchy
  9. This has been sad to read. But I see the love held for "lucky" I think lucky was very lucky indeed. The shame of having pets, is they do pass on. My first thought reading this is sadly I have had a pet dog die of a heart attack in my hands. One of the other dogs was barking madly, which drew my attention, they do sense & know. I sent mum off to the phone to ring the vet, so at least he could have a quiet pat & die in peace, poor (Language Removed Bill ) Like Barrie, I looked into his eyes. Yep, blubbered once they closed. Frenchy
  10. I dont think the ottos will go well with the barbs. Adding cories should be fine. Its more a case of... how good the filtration, to water changes, to stocking levels... to water quality. Re my signature. Frenchy
  11. Has anyone been in a tank & looked out? Its weird. I am more a fan of drop eye being linked to being in a tank. If there is a reason. Frenchy
  12. Just trying to remember peoples posts, first time reading it..... Well shop around if you are not happy with a store.... vote with your $$$. If this shop is so bad, why do some keep going back? Fish are viewed differently to other pets. How many RSPCA cases against fish keepers do you see. Multi pet stores will employ kids, its cheaper. Most people know how to look after a dog right? How about the consumer know what he is on about & study what fish he/she wants. As for its all about the $$$, these stores value badly. The best shops have the best staff. Any muppet can sell something to a point. Repeat sales is where it is at. Sure they will still turn over $$$ by share volume of people. But they miss out on so much more. It's no hard to get people back. Especially if you sell a tank set up, it's so much easier. & once you talk to people, if they like a fish that isn't compatible, easy to recommend a few other species. I would love to see more posts here about great stores, that offer great service & know what they are doing. Some LFS stores lack this service. I am sick of seeing dead fish at this end. Even by shops that are meant to be good. I don't visit lfs much anymore either. Most of it is to do with comfort zones, being slack. I only enjoy visiting a couple of lfs now. Thats here in Aussie where we have plenty of LFS. As for the person earlier who mentioned car salesmans. They are just that. Firstly they are on commission. & in theory with what you are saying, they should be able to give me km's to litre, how do I services on the car? can you show me how to change a tyre? etc. Its all to do with keeping a "car" aye lol As for mark up on livestock, whether it be cats, dogs, fish etc. What are these compared to other products sold in any industry? Then think about what costs there are because of this. Also dry stock tends not to have the mark up it used to. Especially here in Aussie. With online stores & specialist dry goods stores to compete with. So another excuse for mark up on live stock more. Need to make money somewhere. Most of this has been a weak ar..d sook. Leave that to the poms. If service annoys you that much, see the manager. If that doesn't work... do as I do, line 2. Also with dogs.... sorry to say they are all hybrids. Frenchy
  13. Neons can be a food source for discus. Cardinals are a far better option Frenchy
  14. Heres a handy link http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/buffer_recipe.php Frenchy
  15. Sweet as. Never have kept NZ natives, but the way you treat is a great better safe than sorry. You think the shop mentioned would pass that info on. Especially as you get people to use more of the product to, hence more sale profit  But you then have a happy customer as they aint always going back. No wonder some people think white spot is a hard disease to treat. Frenchy
  16. Spot on Ryan. I was thinking it was one of 2 things. Water or agression, hence the questions. If its water then the others will go the same way as the yellow. If it was agression, the once the yellow is well again & through back to the lions, be a reoccurance. Frenchy
  17. Yep, sure does. The cycle goes a lot quicker in warmer water. As for protocol, well most people in the industry are not vets & or specialise in fish. Most people have a stab or work by what works for them. Best to follow a routine & stick to that knowing they get killed at a part of the cycle. Hence the gravel vacs as well, moving ornaments, get rid of dead spots etc. Salt, well catfish don't like that either. But salt works well for fresh water parasites, like fresh water does for salt water parasites. But the doses to kill parasites usually isn't good for the fish either. I would never follow what Mel was told. There should never be an "if" after just one treatment for a start. Frenchy
  18. Malachite Green, did they tell you its carcenagenic? If you are treating whitespot, then I believe they have given you both the wrong information. You will never kill off whitespot with one treatment in a cold water or tropical tank. 3 days, pfft! The parasite can only be killed at one part of the cycle. Oh, if using on Catfish, treat at half dose. To answer orginal question... I would treat, water change on 3rd day using a gravel vac, dose again at 1drop per litre, 3rd day again. I would do at least 3 treatments. If the tank is tropical, bump the temp up to 30 degrees & increse airation in the tank. Frenchy
  19. Looks similar to Synspilum, hard to tell. Frenchy
  20. Did you test your water at all? How often do you do water changes, how much water do you change, do u use a gravel vac & how often & how do you clean your filters? What size tank too? Just trying to prevent further possible problems with the questions asked. Frenchy
  21. Frozen baby brine shrimp will do the trick. Progress them to crushed flake. Just noticed the date... If they have egg sack you don't really have to sorry about feeding them, a note for next time. Frenchy
  22. Happy New Year to everyone.... Hope all is well in the land of the long white cloud Frenchy
  23. If I was to have a stab... The third fish down in last pic could be a girl. If ya could get them all side on be easier to tell. trick to buying altos, is to grab the biggest couple, smallest or most slender 4-6. One in top pic is a boy as a guess. Frenchy
  24. Common fronnies go for about $20 give or take at 3cm.... They have been around for years, so that may be some indication for yas. Frenchy
