  1. That is an interesting read. We had someone post this up on a local forum here a few days ago. Surprised not many people seemed interested. Frenchy
  2. Some very nive specimens there. 8) Frenchy
  3. Well done & good luck with raising the fry Frenchy
  4. With the numbers you have, it should be fine. Frenchy
  5. Apparently Val is in the same area of the lake as Electric Yellows. So yeh, may help. I used it more to break up territories & it offers somewhere for those lower down the pecking order, somewhere to hide too. Frenchy
  6. The colour granules could be high in asthaxathan. That could be a reason for the marking too. Try getting your hands on a food that has spirulina in it. Great for mbunas. Use the spirulina food daily as your base food & the others just a couple days a week. See if that helps. ps; I used to use frozen mysis shrimp for something different for them too. Frenchy
  7. He is exserting his dominace. The dirty marks that sometimes u see in yellows, don't appear as the fish reached maturity, adolescence.... This may get worse, stay like that or go away with mood swings. All you can do is put up with it, or trade him in. Trick to buying yellows is to look really hard at them when young. Pick out the cleanest looking{body} ones you can find. ps; what are you feeding them? Frenchy
  8. Are you sure they are 2 f & 2 m? This is what I ask people when they have sexual mature fish that aren't cracking the whip. What size tank are they in? What else is in the tank with them? How is the tank decorated? What do you feed & what are the water conditions? & with yellows, are the fish all the same size? If all these are fine, the only other thing is to try & add more girls to the colony, sadly, easier said than done. Frenchy
  9. Those that said Blue Acaras, are worng. Those that said Jack Dempsey's correct. Sell plenty of them here. Are they a hybrid of Jack Dempsey, very hard to tell. Which I am more likely will say, they are legit. Frenchy
  10. We have these in NZ. Taiwan reefs are so much better than Red Empress when grown up. Just a tip to the kiwis, these species cross breed very easily. Very hard to find pure species here in Aussie now days, or at least good quality. Red Empress juvies should have the horizontal bar only. Taiwans mixture of vert & hor. Frenchy
  11. They are not these http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=1392 Sorry to say, this person is clutching at straws. Huge differences. Just to add Aulonocara stuartgranti are legal imports here in Aussie & there are non of these around. None in Asia anyway. If you have an importer who goes via Germany, then your luck increased a little bit. Hands are fine too if they are wet, probably easier on the fish than what nets are too. Frenchy
  12. Plenty of kiwis here too   Fronnies are pretty cool & are on the import list. You would need to heat the pond in winter here {Gold Coast} & cover it well as of native wild life hunting for a feed. NZ does win out with the catty imports. So I guess it is what tickles your fancy. You miss in NZ!?!?!? Really!?!?! Frenchy
  13. How big is the tank? The yellows are from wild parents?!?!? How did you lot over there score that? Frenchy
  14. Did I read you correctly in saying that you will keep yellow pair? Is that a separate pair to the other yellows? If adding in, just be careful of size differance. There is a chance of cross breeding of the species mentioned above by others. Depends on if you want to take the risk or not. Frenchy
  15. A side on pic of the 2 male will help. Frenchy
  16. Very nice shots & great looking fish. That is an outstanding electric yellow male too, nice thick black bands. Frenchy
  17. Whats not to like about cobue's? Cool robust fish, the splash of yellow along the top & a nice contast. This colour intensity varies in the males depending on maturity & mood. Females stay a dull blue colour too. We have these in Aussie too. Frenchy
  18. I don't know what is available in NZ.... I use frozen mysis shrimp & to a lesser extent brine shrimp, spirulina flake, a couple of brands of sinking pellets in a couple of different sizes. All I have really ever used. Have you tested your water? Fish could be bored, could of been spooked. Try some dither fish to create comfort so to speak. Frenchy
  19. All fish should get a varied diet. Bloodworms are no where the best food for a start. Just check to make sure your water quality is fine. Frenchy
  20. I had these for me in a display tank... breed very easy. Now I just clicked what u guys meant from snow whites in a previous post. We just call them albino pindani here. Frenchy
  21. I have albino Pseudotropheus Socolofi Look pretty much the same as yours. Colour, shape etc Very old photo... Frenchy
  22. But everything looks like something or somethings. Where do you draw the line? I mean, in most cases the fish we get from wholesalers or lfs. We can see they look like they are meant to. But we can only take their word, unless we DNA them too. Electric blues here are dodgy as & chances are a good number in the hobby world wide aren't true anyway. Cross so easy with lithobates & peacocks. At least when they cross with litho's, the dead give away is the young have utaka spots, which they shouldn't. You could try breeding this with what looks like a true male fryeri & see what the off spring look like. Hopefully all have same shape, no spots or stripes. Frenchy
  23. Brad would sell his mother for the right price  Frenchy
