  1. Not just that Brad. Most fish live at particular water level. ie; surf zone. The larger predators may very a bit in depth, even then, because of oxygen levels, cichlids don't go down far at all in the lakes. Lake Tangy I think is 40 metres top of my head. Frenchy
  2. I havent even been posting much on the forum I am a mod of here. With cricket, training, gym, poker & social life. been hard to get on the computer. How good is Easter, a chance to kick back & relax for a few days. oh & work. Frenchy
  3. wow, I would say more arse than class there. Be very careful. I would be very cautious doing water changes that way with Lake Tangy's. Then again, I don't know the quality of your water there either. I don't play by the rules either when doing the 4x2x2 in the bedroom. Because of carpet, risk of spilling buckets etc. I syphon water straight out the tank out the window into the garden. About 30%. Then I refill with the hose, at a trickle. Usually takes an hour. Adding neutraliser, salts as I go. The tanks in the garage, well I use a big drum & age the water. Fish are hardier than what people give them credit for, but some species are tougher than others. If you are worried about cold water, just add slowly. Or parts at a time. Frenchy
  4. Look what just blew in  I never ended up going. Could of gone for free in the end with Brad. But a night out with the boys was planned & I thought to be more beneficial to me  Shame in a way I missed out but. Frenchy
  5. They take about 2 years to mature. Usually that means 1 1/2 years after purchase, if you got them at 3cm. If anyone wants tips on raising fry let me know. I will post what works for me & tips I got from other breeders. Another thing, fanatic. These are big on jumping. Fill up any little holes or gaps, they will find them. When raising multiple altos. Use a tank with no rocks etc. They will form territories. The smaller & weaker will be picked on, they won't feed as much, get beaten up & also brings me back to the jumping. Keep the water very clean too. Frenchy
  6. Hope I am tagging along? Frenchy
  7. Stuart Grant passed away just over a week ago. http://www.lakemalawi.com/ Frenchy
  8. Apparently the cichlid society in Brissie have him coming in for a chat. I have talked to a few people that met him last time out here. He has a love of birds too. He went to a well known Julie breeder up in these parts back in 99... http://homepage.powerup.com.au/~rodpick/julidochromis.htm If I get the chance to meet him, which book to get signed? Frenchy
  9. I have kept salvini before. The one you have pictured looks just like it. Clearer pic be great, to show colour etc. Frenchy
  10. Have had comps, currently keep White Calvus. Have kept 8 or so different types of altos. Very cool fish. I do part with fry, but a am a bit far away. Frenchy
  11. The crushed coral is just to keep the water buffer. The rift lake cichlids do best in harder water. Malawi's get away with closer to neutral no worries. Lake Tangy's need harder water more so. If our water is low in ph out of the tank you will need something to buffer the water. Any gravel will do normally, more a case of what you like the look of. I am with above.... that size a tank limits you greatly to just a few species. Frenchy
  12. I agree on the catfish & water. As for demasoni, there are plenty up here in Qld{I had a colony, since sold} & last I heard in Sydney too.If you are really after some, contact freakyfish, he owns a lfs on the Gold Coast & has plenty in shop. He may ship for you, or know of a contact down your way. Frenchy
  13. Peacock males will chase each other if similar. I have seen the same problems in 4x2x2 display tank in a lfs. Its a case of mix & match. Sometimes fish just don't get along. All the male is doing is getting rid of the competition, incase a female comes by. Frenchy
  14. Females keep the black striping that all jags have as juvies. Males almost if not completely disappears on maturity. The male is more gold in colour with black speckles. Frenchy
  15. Whenever we had a new customer, someone we didn't know etc. When buying fish we asked what the fish were going into, with... If it was for a new tank, we would only sell a couple, we had a wall chart with the cycle on it. Got the customer in each week for the next 4 weeks for free water tests. That way week 2 & 3 they might buy plants, ornaments etc. week 4 buy a couple more fish, week 5 if still fine, buy what they like.... That way too we can spoon feed, littles bits of info each week. End up with a happy, regular customer who recommends you to others. 8) Frenchy
  16. New tank syndrome. To cycle a tank from scratch takes multiple weeks. I say your tank is still cycling, the red gills & deaths are a common result of adding fish to a new tank. Fish usually start to die in the 2-4 week period. Some lfs will test the water for free, some may charge a small amount. My guess is you will need to perform multiple water changes over the next few weeks. Feed your fish only a small amount every 2nd day for a week or 2. ps; How do you clean your filters? & do you use a gravel vacuum when doing water changes? Frenchy
  17. What type are the 2 large canister filters? I would fill them up with mostly bio media & just one layer of course foam. Then use an internal with fine foam, catch the smaller particles, adds to circulation. Plus you will not have to clean the canister much as well. For a tank that size, I would gone with a sump. But of course use what you have. Frenchy
  18. The joys of living in Aussie  Just to make you more depressed Ryan... have a look at this website, Gold Coast fish keeper. http://www.piczo.com/Sealord1auFrontosa?g=12788693&cr=3 ps; Nice looking fronnies too. Frenchy

  20. I had demasoni's added to a tank that had established breeding colonies of electric yellows & aceiis. All went well. The only problem was the yellows stopped breeding. Frenchy
