  1. Thanks for the replies fullas, the hood has two 30 watt T5's, so prolly a bit of a over kill yeah, we've decided to take the hood off entirely, i'll make up a mesh lid later when they do their thing, it actually looks good with just natural light.
  2. Siran bought a couple all plastic non-return valves from LPS for a couple bucks each just today
  3. My guess is if it lets gas in backwards then it would let the fluid in too, so probably no, just blow into it backwards and see....
  4. We've had to remove the ferns, the lights were just too intense, by the end of the day the big fern was all dry and crunchy, so we've put them all back and replaced them all with peace lilies, doesn't look native any more but looks quite exotic now. I think we may still have problems with the lights though, do you need the lights on for basking when the tadpoles have transformed for 12 hours or can we have them on for 3 hr periods during the day?
  5. Cheers guys the answer to that depends entirely on whether it's legal to take native flora from the bush
  6. We've no experience with 'fogs' at all so any advice or help will very much appreciated. Cheers
  7. Well after months of talking about it we've finally got it sorted, We've had the 'baby fogs' as our 3 1/2 yr old calls them, in a bucket out back for ages, so it's great to be finally able to get them inside. We had put a internal filter aside but we've discovered it don't go, will the tadpoles be OK for a week or so without it, or any surface agitation? I assume they will as they've had none in the bucket and have done well.
  8. Thank you very much. Do you know the ratio for that? or do I just fill a bucket and splash a bit in. Thanks heaps
  9. How do you go about cleaning an air curtain, as the holes are so small, and they do get a bit clogged. Would a nail brush do or is there some simpler way of doing it. Any ideas? Thanks Siran
  10. It's only the needles that make them abort. Any Cyprus or pine will do the same thing. We've had a piece of macro in our tank for around 8 months and had no probs
  11. It's a shame you're so far away, we have a piece of driftwood that would be perfect.
  12. Rimu is prolly about 30 or 40 odd dollars per meter....Beech won't won't be any cheaper, using any timbers like that would be sacrilege. Bearing in mind that any untreated timber you use will rot if it's exposed or immersed, Totara may be your best bet if you want to do the native thing, Macro has a natural insecticide, and don't quote me, but I think it may take longer to deteriorate, but it's fairly cheap, or untreated pine? just replace it every few years.
  13. I've had a few trouble cows over the last few months,507 and 500, they booted the living custard out of me in the bails, earlier on when things were full on I was more inclined to just get angry and give em a whack, but you know, it really makes matters far far worse. So I just started going out in the yard, really calm cause they can sense when you're stressed, and pat them, or just lay a hand on them. During cupping I'd do the same, and now I barely notice them, they can still be anxious at times when I take the cups off but generally they're different cows. I've talked to vets about it all and they say that almost all behavioral problems are caused by the farmers and the way they treat their animals.
  14. the leaves grow long and thin like valisaria for about 20cm then the tip goes round, looks quite unusual, any ideas about the yellowing?
