  1. Test kit arrive today. 5 days in: PH 8.0 Ammonia 0.5ppm Nitrite 0ppm Nitrate 10ppm Strange there's no nitrite?
  2. Ah yes i get ya. I run my water level far too high for mechanical surface skimming via the overflow - the entire weir is submerged. Ill play around with my water level to see if it helps. Thanks
  3. Sweet, im hoping to get away with either 5L per week or 10L per fortnight. Indeed, it doesnt happen during the time of the 'normal' cycle.
  4. I've asked before for live rock and been told no so that has always been my assumption. For RO water, puredew 10l from countdown. Says reverse osmosis as one of the purification methods use so good enough for me. Yep don't need a skimmer, but I like gadgets so I'll have a cheap one to make me happy, even though it will have minimal effect. Please elaborate on this redissolving of proteins as I haven't heard of this. Pretty sure I have my water level too high to act like a true wier overflow. Its just submerged grilles which water gets pulled through.
  5. Gave in and got a piece of live. only a 310g piece with good coraline in it. Of course my scape was perfect before and there was no where for more rock! Not entirely happy with it now. While i was getting my hands wet a put a bit of flake in and moved the wavemaker around to see whats the best position - i was right on the money with original placement. I'll post a pic when water clears up. Broke the rear lid whilst it was on the floor - but no drama as I won't need it when I've got a skimmer going in there, will just have to be a bit more onto it with topups and jumping fish are a no go or a risky experiment at best. (Rear lid covers about an inch of the display area too) Edit: rock problems solved. As it doesn't match display rock I put in the media tray. That'll be ok? Better flow past it
  6. Didn't think hff did, I still like the idea of knowing what's in my tank, and corraline doesn't need seeding, should appear in its own at the right time. Expecting to wait 6 weeks for the cycle anyway. Gives me time decide whether I'll upgrade the pump and get a better skimmer. Loved your tank Dave, what was your WC schedule?
  7. You can't just go out and buy live rock... You have to wait for someone selling. Then you don't know what's going in your tank as far as undesirable things goes. The light looks good and is bright, fine for this application. Finnex do a marine+ which would be my choice if I upgrade. I do plan on a few zoos down the road, see how well they go under current lighting etc. As for to water, cost only 35 for my initial fill, and a 10% water change works out to be about 3$!
  8. Did the cyano come straight after diatoms?
  9. Agreed. the amount of times ive gone instinctively looking for one...!
  10. Get a wavemaker pump rated for about 4000lph. They create a large and gentle flow
  11. FTS 17/5/14 FTS 12/5/14 ----------------------------------------------- 3 days ago this was a planted tank. I hit a crossroads where i either had to go for a larger planted tank (livestock options for the nano werent very exciting for me) or convert to SW which i had my eye on when i first bought this tank. Build list: Aquanano 40 tank 50L Stock Aquaone 55W Heater Stock Aquaone pump 500lph Finnex Fugeray 16'' LED light with 4 Actinic LEDs Resun Nano wavemaker 2000Lph 2kg aragonite sand 6kg dead coral rock Found a new stand on the cheap, a blueplanet atlantis stand for $30 6 x 10L bottles of Puredew RO water for initial fill and topups Red sea salt 4kg Smallmag float. Filtration is via the stock false wall with 3 chambers. I fashioned a 3 stage media basket from egg crate, with floss at the top, and will run seachem phosgaurd and purigen in the other chambers. A skimmer (when i find one) will go in the middle. And the 3rd chamber houses the stock pump and heater. Waiting for my test kit, hydrometer, phosgaurd, purigen and a few other bits and pieces to arrive, but tank is up and running just 3 days after being a planted tank Only question is, the dead rock seems pretty clean, will there be enough 'crap' inside it to decompose for cycling or should i start adding some flake to kick start it? FTS on blues only Side shot on blues only FTS's with whites and blues on Location Filter area I already have a vague idea what ill stock, but will depend on whats available at the time. In the future id like to start adding some Zoos and go from there.
  12. This tank has been shut down and restarted as a SW. Will start a new thread!
  13. Yeah I'll be running another power head and keep stock pump. Really digging the media baskets, I'll try and fashion something similar with eggcrate and use your measurements! Took some measurements of the back chambers, the fluval sea skimmer won't fit. Only other one available locally that will fit is the dymax xp30 which is OK, had one before on a 60 cube, skim was weak but my bioload was tiny. Think that's what I'll go with. Interesting to see how the little air driven on performs. Oh and able to do me a favour and measure the Tds on your puredew water? I just bought a ton of it as it says its ro.
  14. Did you make the media rack? I need one for the first chamber of my 40. Hoping a fluval sea skimmer will fit in the middle compartment. Any chance of a photo of how well the eheim 1000 pump fits? It seems everyone gets one, is it really that necessary?
  15. Finned fugeray! Can't rate it highly enough, would put you in medium light I believe, so can balance with good diy co2 and basic liquid ferts I reckon. As for t8s, a powerglo and an aquaglo combined would be a good combination.
  16. The quality of light rather than amount is important. Get a decent bulb. If you do go t5s or even a powerful led having the ability to raise it gives you a lot of flexibility with getting the lighting just right
  17. hey aakash i recieved my powerhead and not using it. its a resun nano 2000lph. Its a proper 'wavemaker' one if you want it.
  18. Good work. Maybe get some fry powder as a backup, though if you have success with the brine shrimp then you'll have a much better survival rate. Baby angels are the cutest
  19. Possibly change in lighting. Leaves had all flattened out on the substrate, and were affected by gsa. I'll probably move them back when I can take some rotundifolia cuttings to put in the Leo. The Leo is 9l including overflow making it just under 3g which I deem OK for a betta, that and the filtration capacity is huge for the water volume.
  20. Update. Not of my main tank, but set up a pico yesterday. Was originally looking for a Dymax IQ3, but HFF dont stock them anymore, and the Leo Q220 is basically a copy (even the robot LED is the same) except glass. Tank area is about 6.5L with filtration behind a false wall (about 20% capacity of the tank) Went with red grit as i havent used it before, and moved my crypts in there for the time being (werent liking the light in the other tank) Some indian fern at the back to bush out. Next time i harvest pups from my javaferns, ill plant out the driftwood. Might try some javamoss too. Inhabitant will be my male betta on his lonesome. Fishless cycling at the moment with some fish food.
  21. Had it as long as ive had the tank. In the past they havent stayed low despite trimming, but that was with lower light. Ive moved it to midground, currently has about 8 nice leaves sitting above the substrate so will keep trimming as necessary. thanks edit: yep got a tank full of jbl balls they do respond well to root ferts.
  22. Will post some updated pictures soon. Have made progress though. Wanted to cram a load of stems so rescaped. Added a load of rotundifolia which is growing well already, and last night about 30 stems of emersed polysperma. Removed indian fern and ambulia. questions: Tiger lotus. Ive always struggled to get them to NOT constantly send leaves to the surface, now, i cannot get them to shoot up. Its putting out leaves constantly, but staying very compact. Could almost foreground plant it (...light bulb...) with emersed stems, all bent and the like, ugly leaves etc.. how do you guys deal with them in large groups? im thinking i have to wait for them to grow submerged, and get enough height to get good submerged cuttings, then plant those neatly and ditch the original stems? (its impossible to plant them nicely when they are all bent, cant see! Im happy with my co2 output now. got some of those specific bottle caps to tidy things up, along with a pressure gauge. When my current brew needs changing, will switch over to a bigger bottle (2l) Algae has subsided. Had a bought of BBA after my rescape, bit of excel took care of that, Diatoms have gone, and i was getting GSA but that seems to have stopped appearing.
  23. Community setup means that as soon as eggs are produced they will most likely be eaten.
