  1. thanks for the pics katrina.. did you breed those yourself? What do you say the colour is? I'm trying to get some sort of consensus so I can say he's such and such a colour...
  2. once my kids left primary school I stopped bothering with duraseal. My teens started back at school yesterday. What a drama for my son .. total stuff up with his course even though we went in and confirmed it all last week. Had to sort it out with the dean who is a real dragon and made it as difficult as she possibly could for my son.
  3. i need to catch him in a full flare.. it looks 180 to me.
  4. animates is not the store I'm thinking of.. it's a privately owned family run store.
  5. oh - wire cutters! at least that is what i call them.. or snips
  6. here he is... as you can see he is not green at all! his dorsal fin sort of folds over at the top when he's not flaring. Like a bend , hard to explain it! how would you describe his colour?.. this is probably the most accurate, though the blue looks a bit less obvious in some lights. It was really hard to coordinate the camera with a flare, but this was the end of a flare and I didn't really notice the red until he was flaring. I kept missing the best shots with everything up and dramatic lol.. his tail really does look much better than I've captured it. I'm not sure if it's "tatty" or if that's just the look. Adrienne , is this a std halfmoon?

    Dropsy?

if it's dropsy i think you need a systematic antibiotic like furan 2 but usually it is difficult to save them at the bloated stage. Epsom salt may help a little with the bloat but is not a cure.
  8. well he has now been named by Jaimee.. "Flood" After a song called "the flood" in which there is a line that goes "turning me black and blue" - which is his colour.
  9. just as long as it looks green.. not a maybe it's green. She was originally looking for a metallic green male but just any green now. Since we've now got a male.. it will have to be a female to put in the community tank with my other HM female betta and guppies etc.
  10. I'll get some photos up tomorrow if I can. Can two females live in the same tank? (AR850) Jaimee still wants a green betta!
  11. yep .. I saw you bidding. Is it a crime that I won't be breeding him? he very pretty and flowy.
  12. yes, i got him from TM. I thought he was going to go for more so was pleased when I won him. Not quite what I thought he was but still very nice.
  13. thanks, I'm going to take my time with this one. I'll take some photos tomorrow when he's settled. He's a dark blue/black HM.. though was supposed to be dark green. Maybe it's just evening light making him look different.
  14. Just picked up a new boy this evening, he's floating in the tank now but i noticed his water felt a lot warmer than my tank. So i took the temp and it was 30.5oC after traveling 15 minutes so who knows what it was before. My tank is 26oC. Also his pH is 6.2 and mine is 6.8 - that's quite a difference The water temp and pH that he's used to is a lot different to mine, so how long should i be acclimatising him for... i usually do it over the course of an hour but will he need longer? thanks
  15. I loved my high school years. I'm back at school today. The teens on Thursday
  16. well that will explain why my local pet store is now offering frontline flea .. prefer revolution though.

    Hi I'm new here

lol yeah.. ozzy .. was named after Ozzy Osbourne.
  18. thanks stella yep it started with the two import guppies at the beginning of last year. I usually do QT all new fish for a month - especially live bearers.. but stupid stupid me I didn't that one time and paid for it! I am meticulous with water changes etc so I don't think it was water quality. I'll put it down to those two fish - they must have been infected when I got them as one died the next day and the other a few days later - covered in the telltale white columnaris. I'm just glad the other fish were not infected.. otos, etc. I've come to the conclusion that guppys are not as hardy as their reputation!
  19. lol.. I got my hubby on board by buying him his own fish .. so he has ONE fish in the tank - but it's his.

  22. does this mean that colamnaris can be in the water just lurking about for any amount of time without manifesting itself... is it in all water or does it need to be brought in by a carrier? Early last year I bought two nice male guppys (imports) but within days they had died and then one by one I lost most of my other guppies, starting with the males and then the females. It looked like columnaris and the other guppy's were trying to eat the white stuff of the dead and dying! Only guppies were affected, nothing else. I dropped the temp, treated the tank and saved the last remaining few guppies. I have been building up my guppies slowly again since then and they had been fine for months ... until ...summer hit, the temp went up to 27oC in the tank ( my therm is set to 25oC) and then I lost a few more guppies again .. just in that one tank, not in the others, and just guppies. But this time there were no visible signs of columanaris. I had read that columnaris will thrive at 27oC+ so I'm wondering if it was dormant until the warmer temp and then got some of my new fish .. who again were imports (all but one died ) .. the NZ ones have been unaffected, and the juvenile fry from the imports unaffected. That was about a month ago.. the rest seem fine now but I'm watching like a hawk for any signs of sickness and have added a couple of new ones and they all seem ok.
  23. that looks good... but what are you going to do for a QT ?
