  1. yup from phil i have mine in with killies, feed them frozen bloodworms and they are pretty quick to grab the ones that make it to the bottom of the tank. I read some of phils threads on here about them and it mentioned they were carnivorous, so then i looked at other types of carnivorous whiptails online and went by that. They wont touch pleco tablets or anything, was told when i got them they were eating flake but they don't seem to eat it, just ignore it, but if i put some in a night time its gone in the morning so maybe they eat it in the dark. They're funny with the bloodworms, they suck all the red part out and leave the clear casing things behind. They're cool little fish, and mine have grown really fast. Might get some more when i have the $'s.
  2. bikbok if they are black whiptails like mine they love bloodworms, its their favourite. And anything else meaty, they're not into veges
  3. i'm nearly better today just a persistent snotty nose and half deaf cause my ears are blocked. Only a few days of really feeling sick so i don't think i can say i had the flu. Instead of telling them to stop shouting i'm saying speak louder! to the kids all day, makes a nice change lol. ps the strawberry liquid panadol for kids is heaps nicer than tablets when you're sick.
  4. those are big bubbles maybe he's just trying out his skills and trying to get the hang of it, does he build nests in his own tank? I though mine was never going to build one, i put the first girl in in the afternoon, and he just danced around for hours, with no sign of doing anything else. I checked at 8.30 that night, nothing, felt dispirited, then at 9.30 i went to turn the lights off and he'd built two huge ones in only an hour. I was so excited and proud of him lol. So maybe yours will be the same and suddenly start building in earnest in a demonic burst of activity
  5. i've got tails :bounce: expected them to hatch in the wee hours last night, so i jumped up this morning and ran to look, couldn't see anything. Tried not to worry that they'd been eaten because i've already thought several times that he'd eaten the eggs, then seen them when i've looked again. So just went and stared for a third time this morning and finally found them, a few tiny tails hanging down. They are lighter than i thought, i was looking for black tails but they're more pale, is this ok? Nearly impossible to see since he's moved them to the back of the nest, very clever move on his part - the back of it has just a few centimetres between the bubbles and some big wide amazon sword leaves underwater, so when they drop he can bend down, pick them off the leaves and spit them back up without moving. They seem to be staying stuck in the bubbles though, he's just carefully inspecting everything to make sure he hasn't missed any. Squinted cross eyed at these miniscule threads of tails for a few minutes, then decided i need to buy a magnafying glass. Why don't people add that to the list of suggested items to buy before trying to breed lol. Anyway fingers crossed for me still, i hope the tiny threads can make it to free swimming
  6. lol yes i forgot about that one can't stand it does everyone really have multiple tvs these days? I still have a normal old tv, which seems big to me, until i visit other people and theirs are flat and 10x the size
  7. 8.2 according to the first reports coming in, sounds like a whopper glad your tank held up
  8. Whats so wrong with tampon adds? No more offensive than adds for deodorant or toilet cleaner, periods are a fact of life lol. I knew what tampons were for long before i needed them, my mum didn't hide them away in the back of the cuboard like a dirty secret
  9. i gave mine a piece of poly, he built a small nest under it but then built a huge one on the edge of some plants where they break the surface, and thats the one he's using, its sort of spread into the corner too. They might like having a few different choices of building sites.
  10. does he have something to build his nest under? my first spawn is going well so far (touch wood), dad is still looking after his eggs nicely. good luck with yours
  11. wow thats very cool love the spiky piece of driftwood whats the plant on the left?
  12. poor kunekune embarassing admision - my daughters nickname for 2 years was kunekune. It started when she was crawling and trying out new noises  +1 i can't stand those adds for dettol spray, whats happening to people if we need to live in sterile invironments. Nothing beats a dirty house for building a strong immune system, and letting your body fight off the occasional cold without resorting to drugs. I never usually get sick at all, this is a rare indulgence for me lol
  13. lol mine pretend to look after me if i have a blanket and a hottie, but only because its warm coniving little critters that they are
  14. me too been stuck at home the last few days with a cold/flu, it sucks my son had it last week, now i've got it, and i suspect my daughter will come down with it next week just in time for preschool to start doesn't help that the high is 10deg today, i've got a hot water bottle up my jumper
  15. that was meant to be in reply to your other post, meaning good luck to you too
  16. all i got with my camera was a few seconds of video, then the batteries went don't ask me for advice lol, i know nothing they're in a two foot tank for spawning, filled about 12cm or so, with an indian almond leaf making the water yellow and the bubbles sticky. Don't know how much difference they make to spawning but thought i needed all the help i could get. Parents been conditioned since i got them on bloodworms, brine shrimp and a tiny bit of flake. If they make it to free swimming i'll get some batteries and get photos of them
  17. *jumps up and down in excitement* last week i tried to spawn my lovely boy with a blue hm girl, he ate her fins in seconds, then she hid for a day, then she swam around the back of the tank while he tried to entice her, but neither really seemed to know what to do. She stayed all barred up all week, he didn't attack her again so i waited and waited. Occasionally she'd go over to the nest and wag her tail at him and then he'd look confused and either chase her or run away. So after a week i gave up and put her back in her own tank. Then last night i put in a big girl who's been in our community tank, she's bigger than him and acts really bold so i thought maybe she'd shove him in the right direction, she didn't waste any time and chased him to the nest and helped enlarge it as soon as i let her out this morning. Just went to check on them before and they are spawning I could watch for hours but don't want to disturb them, so just taking quick peeks to see how they're getting on. Ms 4 is equally fascinated by them, the girl is one of her fish. I've seen them embrace properly 3 times and the other 2 times dads stunned himself instead, oops. So i'm excited! lol. Dad is on my avatar and mum is green, her fins aren't quite as wide as the first girls but i'm sure they'll be lovely babies none the less if i can get them that far. Fingers crossed dad knows what to do from here and doesn't eat them.
  18. budget drinks are only 80c each, $40 for 50 i bought a couple for brine shrimp, the pams lemonade was suprisingly nice, not too sweet or fizzy so it almost tastes like tonic water lol.
  19. don't know how much effect the ial has on helping them spawn, haven't used it before, but it certainly makes the bubbles stronger. I had a little airstone in the corner of my boys tank and when i put the leaf in it even made the bubbles from that clump together on the surface. I'll post a pic of his nest later. the tiny fry in the tank are snakeskin guppies, the ones in the jars are a pile of random guppies i'd just been fishing out of our community tank to try and get rid of. There's another one of those cube tanks with killi fry and a tank up top with the australes.
  20. coolies i'm going to put some in my now heated tank anyway, its a nice looking plant, so maybe i'll try some in my pond this spring too, be interesting to see if it can survive over winter in a deep pond.
  21. yeah i'm only repeating what i've heard about them, haven't got one myself. We just have an oil heater, darn expensive but at least it keeps us warm and is safe to leave running 24/7. Looked into getting a fire, decided a normal one is the best bet since wood is cheap/free here, but the instalation cost and permits etc are hefty. Maybe next winter On another note, we were freezing in the lounge trying to watch tv until recently, its about 60spm and running the wall fan heater barely heats it, so i got fed up and nailed some old sheets up to seperate the end of the lounge we use, about 20sqm, now it gets toasty and warm in a few minutes and i'm saving loads of power. Doesn't look too pretty but who cares, i'd rather be warm lol. Will take them down in spring. The oil heater is 2kw and heats two bedrooms from the hallway inbetween, thanks to super thick insulating curtains and batts in the ceiling. I worked out it costs $60/month to run it so not bad compared to the price of a fireplace.
  22. i had it once, on a new heater as others have said, but it was clear, i only discovered it when i touched the heater. It was icky I wiped it off and it went away after a while.
  23. well i ended up with a spare heater so now its a tiny heated tank will post a pic when i've got the plants in
