  1. my girl in the community tank looked like that when she ate too much food once, didn't feed for a few days and she was fine. Could that be it? I'm no expert :-?
  2. there's an organic type of peanut butter at our supermarket, way nicer they also do a cashew nut butter and a couple of others, they look delish but i haven't tried them yet the only problem with a small town like this is that we only have one crappy expensive supermarket (new world) and the nearest other supermarket is more than an hours drive away So we are rather limited in choice. Even more so since most of the population are beer-guzzling red-meat-loving forestry workers I try to stock up on stuff when i'm in auckland, sushi rice for example we can't get here, and some brands of new zealand made food that aren't stocked here.
  3. I want to add at least one more light to this tank - Its about 60-70cm high and only has one 15w t8 built into the hood. I figure i could probably attach one to the underside of the door that opens on the front, and drill a hole for the power cord to come out through the top of the door, but would like to put one further back too. The existing light is in the middle of the hood, door right in front, a metal thingy behind which is imagine is the electrics part of the light, then the filter tray at the back. Ideally i want a light tacked on under the metal thing and one on the front door. Suggestions on how to go about it? Would those powersave fluro lights be the best bet, since they don't have anything around them?
  4. i have an elite tank with exposed lights like that, when the lights are on they stay dry from heat but are soaking overnight, no problems in almost a year i've had it. It has tightly sealed endcaps on the tubes which i imagine keeps the moisture out of the connections.
  5. i had a carpet fish this morning and yes, it was the corner. 1 1/2cm, if that, space where the cables go out. Every other tiny crack was taped closed. In my killie tanks i keep 15cm between the water line and the lid, but this was a betta so i'd filled it up quite high
  6. I lost my blue hm female this morning, carpet fish she was in a tighly hooded tank, with only one tiny 1 1/2cm gap for the cables me is gutted but on the positive side my babies look to be doing well. i'll have to start searching for another true hm girl re microworms, what are you feeding them? I had one lot that weren't going very well, so i started a second lot and that took off and overtook the first one in a couple of days, don't know what was up with the first ones. Maybe just try a new culture?
  7. jeesh that looks cold! i think i'll put off going up until it gets warmer next month
  8. they are beautiful mum is one of the nicest females i've ever seen
  9. So i've got a pair of angels coming for my new tank, but i've got no idea what they are compatible with. I'd like to put a couple of bristlenoses in, apart from that i'm open to suggestions. I'd like a school of neons or cardinals but i gather they would get eaten? Would some male killies be ok or would they pick on the angels/vice versa? What do people keep with their angels? Can see the tank here - http://fishkeepers.co.nz/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=779
  10. were they used to being together? Girls fight too
  11. microworms atm then will add a little bit of bbs when they are big enough
  12. counted 15 this morning At least the water quality should be good, with such a small number. As long as they can find the food.
  13. yeah i know, the cocoa beans are just as bad as a the palm oil, ditto the milk. at least whittakers is made in nz i don't eat meat or eggs etc so i think i'm aloud to indulge in chocolate, can't be perfect
  14. so pig out on whittakers instead, their milk chocolate macadamia is the best
  15. I counted 13 last night, really hard to see Hopefully they will all grow big, but i'm taking it as a trial run for dad anyway, he should have more idea what to do now for when i try again with my blue girl.
  16. i started with a pair inside lol, they multiplied almost like guppies lol, so we got an avairy
  17. i had an avairy as a kid, with zebra finches, they were cool little birds would love to have goldine (sp?) finches one day, beautiful colourful little things
  18. yes i'm english? too lol I don't keep birds though, so maybe i am a girl afterall I was amazed at that gender thread on here a while back, that showed there were at least equal numbers of girls.
  19. lol pheonix i always thought you were a girl maybe cause i've never met a guy with pet birds i'm sure everyone can guess what i am
  20. or buy a second tank, with heater, and move everything except the danios and mussel into it http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 686840.htm then you can have a nice tropical tank, and if you get a large one add some other tropical fish, and still have your cold water tank.
  21. once the lights are off she'll probably come out and be ignored
  22. i looked first thing this morning, managed to count about 5 tails, really hard to see them at all since they're far away from the front of the tank. Looked again a couple of hours later and couldn't see any So i took dad out, and searched for ages but my eyes were getting blurrier and blurrier lol. Looked again an hour later and counted two babies, sitting straight on the surface :bounce: i'm sure there's at least a few more in there, will have to wait for the nest to fall apart more before i can tell. so i'm pleased they haven't all been eaten, maybe even none have
  23. lol i didn't do well on that post did i  intented - intended i'm sure certain - i'm certain
  24. criketman i think most of us were just stunned that you found those adds so wrong. No offence intented, the way a different culture can view something as offensive that most of us wouldn't think twice about makes me want to question it and be perplexed by how something so natural can be taboo in other places. I'm sure certain other cultures find the red meat adds just as bad, but some kiwis would be shocked by that too.
