  1. I picked up a new tank dirt cheap the other day, with a stand and hood. It came with a powerhead (1600L/h) and in the hood theres a compartment with a spray bar for it to connect to, which sprays onto a tray of noodles and filter wool. Then at the end of the compartment there was just a round hole for the water to fall back into the tank. I didn't like the look of it so i blocked up the hole and drilled little holes all through the bottom of the compartment, so it should drip out like a trickle thing. Question is how many holes should i need to let the water flow? I want it reasonably slow trickling, and don't want to slow the filter down (would not enough do that?) but i don't want to have too many holes so it only drips. Is there any easy way to work it out or do I have to just keep drilling and testing it? I know nothing about these hood filter thingies, i just had to guess at how it works, and i suspect the tray itself is a replacement because it doesn't quite fit and the holes dont line up.
  2. i don't think he was too pleased with being moved though, i put him back where he goes after an hour or so and he dug another big hole and picked up enough stones to 1/2 fill his house. I briefly contemplated getting a little baby algae eater for the divided part, until i remembered how fast this one grew. Might just have to get another tank then i can take the divider out of this one. Any excuse :bounce:
  3. yup it sloshes like crazy, probably best to bag all the fish with lots of water, then you can empty the tanks and pour them back in at the other end.
  4. you could look at what temp your tanks are set to, and if any of them can safely be lowered by a couple of degrees. Every little bit saves. I cover the laundry tank at night with a massive pink batts blanket, because its freezing in there. This morning the edge of the cover was iced onto the window, thinking about just insulating the whole room properly instead.
  5. hehe those are some funny looking fish they remind me of this toy pony i had as a kid that had bright red lipstick
  6. oh and before winter, i don't know how many units but about $30 for power, still $100 for the lines though, year round rip off.
  7. mine this month is 860 units, $133 + $100 for the lines co, so $233 all up. Wish i could pay $160 for 700 units, but we get extra ripped off here thanks to seperate bills for the lines. I worked out the most my tanks could use is $60/month, thats 5 heaters and a couple of lights, filters, assuming that the heaters run 2/3 of the time. Biggest cost is the oil heater to heat the house, we don't have a drier.
  8. ok i'll try that stuff then, and post my results
  9. yup they have the end of the tank to themselves, they were in the big part but thought they might be more interested in each other in there all the algae is gone, every smidgen, and Algae looks even fatter than usual
  10. we had ice on the inside of the windows last week... but i would probably fill the tank first and see what temp it gets down to overnight for a few nights, don't want ice block fish
  11. what about this stuff? http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 228620.htm thats the sort of plant i was thinking of
  12. we have the end foot of a community tank sectioned off, and since i had to change the light over it all the glass in the end has got covered in brown algae. So i put mr algae in there just in case he'd eat some - didn't expect this lol 1/2 an hour later its nearly all gone, tank looks nice again he's real picky and doesn't like sinking pellets much, i guess he does eat more algae out of his tank than i thought. Just can't believe how fast and efficiant he is, i couldn't beat that with a glass cleaner :bounce:
  13. i was thinking about 8, didn't really mean two it'll be a 1ft cube if i do it, would like a couple of those big leaved plants that come in little pots, whatever they're called. I know nothing about plants lol. Only pond plant i know of is oxygen weed, there must be more choice than that?
  14. i'm thinking about setting up a little tank in our kitchen, with a couple of mountain minnows. If i want to get plants for it, are there specific types that can handle the cold? Or are most of the general petstore plants ok in cold water? Bearing in mind it could get very cold in there
  15. i paid $5 for my micros on *that site*, but that was with free postage and some little swipey things to pick them up, i think it was a good deal. When you live in the middle of nowhere and any sort of fish food is twice the price of auckland, its handy having them arrive in the post.
  16. if you put a male and a couple of girls in, you'll have probably 100+ babies in less than a month, and the same 4 weeks later. As long as there's a little bit of cover for them they'll fill the tank with the first drop i had hoped that adding a couple of siamese fighters to one of our community tanks might deal with the excess guppies, but nope, two weeks later I had to take out 30 more fry. I'm sure they did eat some though.
  17. or just one female... i would compare them to rabbits, but rabbits don't reproduce anywhere near as fast
  18. and they're now made in aussie, and taste like it if you see any of the old packet nz made chocolate grab it quick, its nearly all gone
  19. ah ok i can't ski anyway but had loads of fun on the bottom of the moutain with a sled and the kids last year only $30 to hire full snow gear for two kids and me, and sleds are $20 to buy
  20. i thought it was open? there's a lovely view of the mountains from a couple of places in town here, but they're a bit too far to get decent photos of, love your one with the soft pink sun
  21. yep rescue remedy is brilliant, just use that its great for calming trapped wild cats and kittens. Feliway sounds great on the advertising, but from all the info i could find on it there's no scientific backing to their claims, and its thought to be just a catnip extract. I've tested it on my cats and it didn't seem to have any effect, but some people swear by it.
  22. lol i was just reading about it there. they've got it as turquoise aka green, just asked cause the other sites i've been reading call it green in official sounding terms lol i've got a pretty turquoise boy too, its a lovely colour with the way it gleams in the light
