  1. yes i use it often just not much details and no photos.
  2. might be to do with group dynamics? leader gets bigger?
  3. rudd are a big bronze/silver carp with red fins. get about a foot long, not huge i guess. but they would be super illegal in the far north, not sure about auckland/waitato
  4. would be nice if there was a good NZ based plant site. so many plants not legal or just not available in NZ :tears:
  5. rudd are a noxious species in most of the country but not in auckland/waikato. are they legal to keep in ponds or just to fish for in those areas?
  6. you could hide the powerheads in the poly maybe? use a smaller piece of poly and pile rocks on top? nice concept, looking forward to seeing it filled!
  7. i wouldn't want to lose that much water volume... maybe a cave underneath somehow?
  8. comet goldfish get pretty big. you may just have to wait!
  9. were they all the same size when you got them?
  10. ah ok. might trim it a bit more than i have been to avoid the black leaf problem. I fertilize the water rather than the substrate but i might pick up some JBL Root balls at some point. they will be good for my swords too
  11. ah so they're root feeders? surprising for a stem plant
  12. anyone got any tips for stargrass? had some for a while and it's never done well. just moved it last week and already it's looking better. any cool ideas for triming it? ive seen it trimmed really short before but that sounds like a lot of work!
  13. looking after my wife's office tank over Christmas and to avoid having 3 tanks i put the fish in my small tank (its a bit over stocked now!) but now im setting the office tank up to raise the emerald cat fry in . my friend offered me his 250L cube tank with butterfly fish and lots-a-catfish, but i don't know where to put it....
  14. it's not that they shouldn't be sold at all, they can be very useful. they just shouldn't be marketed for goldfish
  15. something like this? http://www.thewarehouse.co.nz/red/catalog/product/Camille-Tapered-Glass-Vase-14.3x6x15cm?SKU=1313522
  16. check out the warehouse and similar. they sell a selection of glass jars not sure if anything is big enough though
  17. anyone know if there has there been any developments on this front? goodness knows how long ago this article was published... http://www.fnzas.org.nz/index.php?PG=NIWAPlant
  18. well over night the eggs disappeared. I suspect the whiptail. next time i might leave the light on in the room so they can see him coming!
  19. hi, I currently have around 10 emerald catfish fry in a large breeding net. they are around 5mm long and growing well. today i noticed that my new Bolivian rams have laid eggs on a small rock and are guarding them. sooo the question is what should I do: 1. leave things as they are. will my other fish eat the fry when they hatch? how hard are they to feed in the community? 2. evict the catfish fry and put the eggs in the net. will the rams eat the catfish fry? 3. put the eggs in with the fry.
  20. just the lighter wood I reckon. is that a twisted root piece i see in there? try a different spot for that, could look cool
  21. the problem with most books is that 50% if the fish and 80% of the plants are not available.
  22. yes it would stick to the magnet and could cause problems but as it is very heavy it shouldn't get in there. just watch were you put the intakes
  23. the 'black' in west coast sand is titanomagnitite (iron/titanium ore) it should be very stable and heavy. the rest is just sand. a magnet would pick out the titanomagnitite and leave the sand. might take a bit of work though...
  24. they'll eat anything really, but its not likely that they will eat off the surface. slow sinking food would be good.
