Yeah you just need to consider the adult size of the fish and also the behaviour of different species. For example, you can expect each of the geos to hit at least 20cm, same with the choc catfish, SM don't get too big (only 10cmish) but they are an active swimming fish so require space. 300L will get taken up pretty quickly when stocking average -> large animals. Filtration is good though. I personally don't use the stocking calculators, but at a beginner level they can be useful.

Pacu would outgrow that tank. IMO they should not be offered for sale at all. I have seen absolutely huge pacu at a public aquarium, at least a metre long with deep thick bodies. Maybe if you had 10k litres haha.

Nice pick up! Would like to see some large A. heckelii around again, nice looking fish. There is a group of clowns going on tm at the moment if you are interested. Unrelated, but has anyone seen the ridiculous price being forked out for a datnoid on tm? Over $700 for it. Ludicrous.

I wouldn't buy a kitset because much of the equipment is simply not going to cut it. Or, if you do buy a kitset like the one you posted I would probably upgrade the lighting and the skimmer.

Cheers, she is my favourite fish. She goes through very dramatic colour changes depending on her mood, she doesn't particularly like the little convict or bichirs, but she gets along very well with the oscar who is also a model citizen.

Thanks David, the bichirs have grown well, especially the delhezi, it has put on a lot of mass as well as length. Considering dedicating this tank to a breeding pair of cubans (once I grow out a suitable male), will change the layout a little bit, but keeping the same central american hardscape.

To be honest, the female convict has just wanted to fight the male jag haha. But no doubt would be interested in a male convict.

Cheers, I keep it looking clean as possible without algae build up. Apart from diatoms on the glass there is no algae to speak of, which I am happy about. Convicts are underrated, females are the nicest imo and they have value as an interesting dither fish without inflicting damage.

Thought I'd might as well post an update of my current stocking. Tank is 450L (too small for full size specimens, but will do for now). Stock is 1x Cuban female (20cm), 1x red oscar (30cm), 1x jag (12cm), 1x super pretty convict female (<10cm), 1x longfin senegal bichir (20cm), 1x delhezi bichir (25cm), 1x palmas buttekoferi bichir (25-30cm). Tank receives 50%-70% waterchange weekly and have zero problems. Cuban likes pushing the bichirs around sometimes and frequently wants to pair with the jaguar who doesn't want a bar of it.

Unfortunately lost both of them to an unknown factor. I think it may have been pH shock but I'm not sure. Trying again with some juveniles from Hecticity.

Plecos are boring haha, they are also absurdly expensive. Could try discus? Bigger school of tetras? Definitely reckon that making it planted might re-engage your interest.

Tank is looking good David. I get cold feet with my setup sometimes, but sometimes just changing some stock is all it needs. You should consider full planted with breeding dwarf cichlids or something like that, plants make the tank a bit more...evolving with their growth. Keep some of your current stock or integrate to suit. You could always try native marine?

I have already tried breeding agassizii with some success, I too found the males weak and they passed. Not exactly that many dwarf cichlids to choose from here. Thinking about P. taeniatus or maybe some electric blue rams, but just tentative about jumping into those guys considering their reputation as sensitive fish.
