  1. Hmm.. alrighty, thanks. Just gotta see where the dips are and raise it up somehow. Any tips on materials to use? I don't think the unevenness is very bad, might just be 1-2cm here and there.
  2. lol, I was kidding.. Flamingoes turn pink because of all the shrimp they eat, so if you feed your red all that good stuff - something is bound to happen lol! Hmm.. What if we gutloaded YOU with heaps of spirulina?? Turn you nice and :an!gry :roey:
  3. Stuff the native species lol, we want imports! :nfs:
  4. The time difference is really a clear indicator of good genetics. Of course, without a second 'control' fish, we cannot rule that the colour was in any way improved by feeding copious amounts of goldfish/ crickets/ mealworms/ locusts/ prawns/ massivore/ spirulina.
  5. Come now, let's weep together lol. ...or we could stage a protest at Aotea Square. Down with MAF! :digH:
  6. I would say Sennheiser as well. Bose is good for speakers, but that does not necessarily mean that their headphones are good by extension. Sometimes companies can produce one product really well, yet produce others terribly. Don't buy headphones made by computer companies like Logitech, I've had terrible experiences with them haha. Panasonic is quite alright - not the highest quality, but decent for the price you're paying.
  7. Another question though - does a slightly uneven concrete surface create a huge safety risk for a tank? I know that ideally the concrete should be completely level, but it's an outdoor shed, so I'm not sure how much detail went into its construction. How uneven is too uneven?
  8. That is insane! Man, I would NOT want to be the downstairs neighbours should anything go wrong lol... Anyway - quick update for anybody interested. We managed to find a place for cheaper than the place I posted about. (Turns out, the 'plywood' was just a skin - it was concrete foundation underneath all the while!) But the new place has an outdoor shed where I can run power to and it's got a concrete floor (just need to check that it's level). So, there's no risk of flooding the house/ wetting the carpet, water change can go straight into the nearby drain and filling up will be with the hose 3m away! :happy2:
  9. Are you trying to interrogate your fish? "A platy was found dead last night; eyes were eaten. Where were you at 8pm last night? In the plastic skull or near the sunken castle?" :sml2:
  10. I'm not an expert on ponds, but IMO the main problem is that you have no filter. I recommend you read through this thread and its sub-links: http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=6979 Without a filter in place, the fish are essentially swimming in their own waste till you do a water change. To cure your algae problem, you can either put up some shade to reduce the sunlight OR get a filter with a built-in UV steriliser.
  11. Never say never lol! I finished uni in July and swore I would not set foot in another institution of learning ever again. *nek minit* I'm considering doing a course so that I can get a real job lol!
  12. Would be easier to go messing around under the house if we actually owned the place haha. But if our application is successful, we'll have another look and actually see if it's doable. Will probably have to get an engineer friend to have a look too. It's a pity - it's such a nice place!
  13. Cool, cool. Thanks for all the advice lol. Guess we've gotta look for a place with a concrete floored garage lol.
  14. Hi all We're in the market for a rental at the moment and we saw one yesterday which we really liked. Only (potential) problem is, I know where my tank COULD go, but whether or not I SHOULD put it there is another thing. Basically, it's on the ground floor (no basement) and the flooring is plywood. My tank capacity is approximately 750L, plus glass weight, plus wooden stand - I estimate that it weighs just over 1 tonne. Questions: 1. Is it safe to put it on the plywood floor if it's on the ground floor? 2. Will it cause any damage to the floor? 3. Can I reduce the damage/ spread the weight more by putting some carpet offcuts underneath the tank stand? Thanks - I just want to be prepared to argue my case if the landlord does accept our application!
  15. You might want to do a water test first lol. If the tank has been sitting empty for 4 years, the silicon might not be as strong as if it'd been filled - or so I've heard. Maybe someone else can clarify this?
  16. I think that raw pork/ chicken/ beef (in moderation) would be better for them than processed meats. Beefheart can be quite lean if the fat is removed, and is high in protein - probably a better option than ham, IMO.
  17. LOL! There's a certain resignation to one's fate in this theory. Kinda like, "Oh, what the heck, I had a good run - let's see if I survive another day." The Russian roulette of nature lol.
  18. Just a conundrum which I've inflicted upon myself recently and haven't been able to figure out myself... How do fish know how big they are in relation to other fish? Points I've come up with: 1. Fish are unable to identify themselves in mirrors like humans and chimps - they think that the fish in the mirror is another fish and will attack it. 2. Large predatory fish somehow know that some prey are too large while others are edible - but how do they know without knowing the size of their own stomaches and jaws?? Can anybody shed some light? :smln:
  19. Hmm.. Powder Massivore with a bottle of milk lol! Henward's first-born: 'Hercules' is a nice name..
  20. I was thinking more rich and famous haha.. By extension you would be promoted to being a trophy wife - win/win!
  21. Leave it off! He looks a bit like Paul MaCartney lol.. :sage:
  22. How big was he? If his body alone was around the 4-5cm mark, he might have just died from old age. Bettas don't last very long - 2 or 3 years if you're lucky. Sorry for your loss all the same.
  23. I'm not sure how your tank overflow/ sump is set up, but doesn't your tank overflow reach a certain water level? With mine, if there is a power cut, the water will keep flowing through the overflow into the sump, but it will stop without flooding the room because the overflow piping eventually becomes higher than the dropping tank water level. Hope I'm making sense!
  24. Oh well, good on you for taking him to a good home instead of that holding tank, but I'll miss checking him out when I'm there lol.
  25. lol, someone, anyone! please photoshop a beret and a tiny moustache onto Brutus the Red and upload it here?? It would look hilarious! :rotf:
