  1. Is that Java Fern in the background? Will that survive in brackish water?
  2. +1 On hot days my AR380 sits no higher than any of the other tanks... with or without hoods
  3. Wow those shrimp are huge! The ones I got were the size of mozzie larvae, which is just as well since I was feeding tiny fish....btw, is that a baby eel?
  4. Yeah, tell me about it. This last week I thought I would go try to collect some mysis shrimp at the estuary... ended up barefoot and up to my thighs in mud..........but at least I left with a bucket of live food for my fishes! Note to self: perfect skills before attempting such a task again.
  5. Congratulations Donna! It is great to increase awareness about how to properly care for these guys. Donna will also soon be a wee celebrity in veterinary circles as she recently assisted me with an article about the care and nursing of turtles for the NZ Veterinary Nursing Journal (published next month). Hopefully more VNs will help to better educate turtle owners and we will all (especially Donna) have fewer battles to fight! (BTW anyone wanting to help me with the upcoming reptiles & amphibians articles let me know! )
  6. Nitrifying bacteria generally require oxygen to work properly and since water is relatively low in oxygen, the water must be circulating through the closed filter to support the bacteria within. In other words, shutting the filter off for several hours at a time will most likely be killing off populations of nitrifying bacteria and thus render the filter ineffective for biological filtration.
  7. I believe whiteworms are very high in fat so they might not be good to feed more than a couple of times a week. Grindal worms might be good though, and possibly vinegar eels. BTW, congrats on the fry, good to know they are enjoying the microworms.
  8. +1 I used to have problems with my Java Fern but it is amazing since I added Flourish Comprehensive - couldn't recommend it enough really. I add 1ml per 40L every day and the plant growth is amazing with no algae or brown spots at all (with or without C02). Just try it for 10 days and you will start to see such a big difference that you won't want to go back.
  9. Wow, nice - I bet they look fantastic in a large group.
  10. Very nice. Next time I am up there I must make sure I set aside time for a visit.
  11. Good on her for making it to 97 - we should all be so lucky. With your genetics Alan, you are just a spring chicken!
  12. The red shed, although you may have to check a few branches as they sometimes are out of stock.
  13. Many vet clinics have standardised prescription fees, usually from $3 to $7 that help them to cover the cost of staff time in drawing up the prescription, entering it into the computer, eft pos fees, pill vials, labels, label printers, inventory control, drug logs and drug handling courses. If you had gotten 10 more tablets, it may not have cost more than a few additional cents! I know it bites but as we know, veterinary medicines are not subsidised but they often cost the same as identical human medicines so clients have to bear the cost. To be perfectly honest, clinics that don't routinely charge prescription fees are probably mismanaged to some extent with their one or two vet nurses no doubt acting as janitors, kennel hands and receptionists instead of the skilled practitioners that they are! *off my soap box now* I do feel for you though. The best thing to do would be to purchase a large bottle and share it with your friends (notice I did not say 'sell').
  14. I feel for you Alan - I have been thinking about you recently and wondering how you were getting on. These truly can be the worst of times. When my dad died, I was his sole heir but when I had my lawyer go to tidy up accounts, they said that a couple of accounts had a lot of money that was withdrawn the day after he died. Cameras at the money machines showed photos of my aunts...and that was only the beginning of what would turn out to be one greedy, ugly affair with them fighting amongst themselves and me struggling to settle the estate with all the banks. Sure is one way to make a bad situation worse but it really taught me a few important lessons for my own life: 1. I never want to be the executor of a will again; 2. The best thing you can do for your loved ones is have a will and suitable executor; 3. if you want someone to have something in particular, give it to them now because once you die, you never know where things may disappear to. Here's hoping everything goes to plan for you now and that your family isn't too badly affected by all of the after affairs.
  15. Righto. Now…what topic is that? Was it the superliciousfigmentatiousimaginarious species of mind altering fishmammalmanbeast that you found in your tank?
