  1. Ooo, that reminds me of something: "Let's eat Grandma!" "Let's eat, Grandma!" Punctuation saves lives.
  2. I like them too! I don't know why everybody bags them, I think they are great. Mine are very active and very territorial and most of them spend very little time at the surface.
  3. Inside every 30 something is an 18 year old saying "What the heck happened??"
  4. seems like a few senior moments going on ladies... (don't ask me how old I am, I refuse to answer)
  5. Well in the absence of toxicity or lack of oxygen, it could just be poor stock but it might also be that the stock brought in a parasite (e.g. gill flukes) or bacterial infection. Might not hurt to deworm if you have any praziquantel, just to eliminate that as a possibility.
  6. Neons aren't the hardiest fish. Do you have good aeration? You might want to increase surface agitation while you investigate the problem. Might be good to do a water change also, just to keep the water quality up. Any other symptoms?
  7. Oh, too bad. Thanks for the thought anyway. Maybe there will be another opportunity sometime soon.
  8. If you keep fast growing plants and keep them healthy by fertilising regularly and adding liquid carbon or CO2 injection, the plants should soak up excess nutrients and thus prevent algae. I have a little tank that gets full sun for several hours a day but it has absolutely no algae because the plants are very healthy and growing fast. Its a fine balance, but it is possible.
  9. Hard to tell with respiratory difficulty. Possibly some sort of gill disease? Check out the following link to narrow down the symptoms. http://www.fishyfarmacy.com/fish_diseas ... rders.html
  10. Very interesting. I have a few hatchets that I always thought were Thoracocharax securis (silver hatchetfish) but apparently this species grows up to 9cm and my fish certainly are not that size so I presume they are actually Gasteropelecus sternicla (common hatchetfish). However, there is a morphological difference between the members of my group. Half look like this, with the stripe that I thought was a characteristic of G. sternicla: And the other half look like this, with a differnt caudal fin, black outline and a spotted-type line (are these also G. sternicla?): Sorry about the distracting bubbles in the photos...
  11. Ember tetras, sparkling gouramis and pygmy corydoras
  12. They would indeed! I wish we could get more of these in the country.
  13. Don't give away all the answers Alan! The test will be closed-book, no Google either. Study up on your acid base chemistry and your carbonate solubilities people!
  14. The bicarbonate + metal cations produces 'carbonate hardness' (aka temporary hardness). Free bivalent metal ions produce 'general hardness.' The process of carbonate hardness is an equilibrium equation and in a tank with an average temperature the level of aqueous CO2 will be relatively constant so there will be aqueous free ions as well as precipitating solid calcium carbonate. Removing CO2 (e.g. by heating) will push the equastion in one direction while a lack of bicarbonate will push it in the opposite direction. Ca2+(aq) + 2HCO3-(aq) CaCO3(s) + CO2(aq) + H2O There will be a test on this tomorrow.
  15. Awesome. I have a little tank that is about those dimensions and I have 3 sparkling gourami and 9 ember tetras. A very nice combination that has really grown on me. I never have been much of a gourami fan but these guys are nothing like the usual. They are very cute with bright blue eyes and they hover around scooping up food from the floor. They do like to hide under the anubias leaves so I would add more of these as well as some ambulia tips if you have them.
  16. My dad used to tell me that all the time. Has worked for me all my life.
  17. From experience, I know that marriage between a 19 year old girl and a 38 year old man is a recipe for disaster...girls need time to sow their oats before settling down and guys need more energy if they hope to keep up!
