  1. That last one was a kicker. I was out feeding the fish and it thrust upward so hard that my feet left the floor! I then went to run to the doorway and couldn't even walk!! All the tanks sloshed about all over the place and the glass cracked on my tank lid again.
  2. Hey Craig, try talking to John at Organism. He has a nano marine tank setup that is designed to minimise all the complications. It might be a good place to start.
  3. There are a few ways to go about it, but one of the most reliable methods is to use a quality water conditioner (dechlorinator) designed for aquatic animals. You can get these from your local fish shop. I have used Seachem Prime but you can also get API Stress Coat, among others, that do the same thing. In such a small container it might be good to keep up the water changes to prevent buildup of wastes that can affect the health of your axolotl.
  4. Yes, a few moderate shakes close to the house. There have been over 5000 since September! I am OVER IT! :nilly:
  5. It's been a bit of a shaky world today... :tears: Many thanks to Neon and Adreinne for the efforts to help and the nice visit. It was a great surprise and so good to take time out for a bit. Also, thanks heaps to ExoticReptilesNZ for the amazing care package. You would be amazed how just about every single thing in that care package became useful in the last 24 hours.
  6. :nilly: apistos...you gotta love 'em
  7. aw, what a shame... it is hideous cleaning up the rubble after something like that. I feel for ya.
  8. (clicks back and forth... before and after....only 10 weeks ago...)
  9. Nice wood. Reminds me of the Aussie mangrove biotope I have been wanting to do for ages.... !drool:
  10. I posted this to my Facebook page a few days ago but I forgot to post it here as well. The video was taken about 10 seconds after a 5.5 aftershock that occurred a couple of hours after the big one on 22 Feb. The tanks had already lost a lot of water with the big one and then I quickly siphoned off more water from the top row tanks so the stand wouldn't be top heavy. Each stand has two flexible braces on each post and an additional two springs attaching the top front beam to studs in the roof so each stand is attached to the wall in six places. They didn't go over, but I am not taking any chances so the tanks are still only a third full until the aftershocks die down again.
  11. Hopefully you caught it early enough. Once mine got a taste for leaves, no amount of cucumber helped. :an!gry
  12. Tiger lotus are heavy feeders and fast growers so nutrient deficiency shows up in no time. I agree with the comments above. I have had a smiliar problem in my tank - I got lazy with dosing, weak spots started showing up in the leaves, and the bristle nose started thinking it was dinner time. One thing leads to another. Once they get into the habit of nibbling, it is very hard to get them out of it too.* :-? *A net works well though.
  13. I have to say, I have seen a dozen more instances of destroyed tanks this time (fortunately not my own ) and there are a few things that stand out as possible problems that could lead to failure: 1. Inadequate glass thickness and/or tank bracing 2. A stand without a lip that prevents the tank from slipping off 3. A stand with a small footprint compared to the tank/ inadequate support of the tank 4. Top heavy stands A couple also had ornaments/rocks that were tossed against the glass, cracking it.
  14. I saw on the news that they had indeed added chlorine today. I think I already can smell it in the tap water.
  15. Welcome. If you are into Facebook, check out the FNZAS Facebook page too. http://www.facebook.com/FNZAS
  16. It knocked over my cuppa. :-? Just some more kudos from today. Thanks to Donna for the time in the garage tonight. That was great. Thanks to Alan yet again - this time for the fishfood and heaters. Thanks to Navarre for helping to move the turtle tank, that will surely come in handy for its new inhabitants that are sure to arrive at any moment. Another lot of thanks to bdspider for going so far out of her way to drop off some hidey holes today, and the chat - I so needed that opportunity to down tools for a while! Also thanks to Nicky from Animates head office who offered to supply any equipment or supplies that are needed to care for the incoming reptiles and fish.
  17. I just saw on the news that the city will be adding chlorine to the water supply. This may or may not affect your area but it would be wise to have some dechlorinators on hand (e.g. API Stress Coat or Seachem Prime) just in case. Most pet shops are still operating and should have these products in stock.
  18. Wow, thanks guys. It is a combined effort. The fishkeepers in this community are so generous and helpful - not to mention they are gannets for all things fishy so there is plenty of equipment out there!
  19. Great idea Wok, the only problem is glass clashing around with each aftershock... Thanks to bdspider and Antwan today for the help picking up all those fish. That was a serious mission! All are safe and sound and looking pretty happy considering their cramped quarters. Thanks to MarkLB for the filters. A total lifesaver. Thanks also to burrowssj for the multi packs and mature filter media. Very helpful!
  20. I had little choice but to use tap water for some fish who were in some foul water and the fish are still 100% fine. I have since started using it to do small water changes with no problems at all. The water seems to be no different than before the quake. It is not smelly in any way and is just as clear as it usually is.
  21. I am in need of the following for some fishy quake refugees. If anyone has some of this stuff to loan and are remotely near Halswell, let me know: spare power packs 100watt heaters 60L or larger plastic bins logs or hidey holes for various sized bottom dwellers Many thanks
  22. Thanks to Livingart, Zev, Lambo, Donna, Ras and bdspider for the help tonight and tomorrow. You guys are awesome. I hope these surviving fish will help keepers to rise up and have another go when they are ready. Also thanks to the numerous people who have contacted me with offers of support. It is so good knowing there is support and help ready at a moment's notice. There are a few big jobs coming up and I am hoping we can continue to rally help for various people and businesses in our fishkeeping community in the weeks to come.
  23. I can take them. Sent you a text. I can keep the media going, or provide mature media once their tank is up and running again. No worries at all.
  24. Do you mean emersed? Emersed = emerged = rising above the surface of the water Immersed = submersed = submerged = dipped in water or covered in water
  25. I am sure we all can help Josh. I have run out of tanks and heating elements but I am sure someone has some to spare. Does anyone have room for skinks?
