Thanks everyone - a few pic of my tank and my fishy problem. Just one more question - when I change the water, I just take it straight from the tap, would that be a problem as well? Burnt split tail white dots/holes Funny scale near the top - it seems like it's eroding (i am not too sure whether this is the best word to describe it) My tank - I know I have 1x perlscale, 2x Oranda, 1x black moor, 1x fantail and the rest are unknown....

I just want to know why :( I love my fish and I just want them to live healthy and happy. It seems more I play around with the tank, the worst it gets.... sighhhhh I just left another post in the disease board and hopefully someone can shed some light on my tank...
-
just a quick update - my fish passed away after the water change in the hospital tank.....
-
Size of the tank - 210L (Aqua One AR 980, no gravels) Stocking Levels - 10 gold fish (3 orandas and some fan tails) + 1 bottom sucker Filtration - standard internal filter, with the Eheim biological media (I have got the brown round balls and the ceramic rgins) What did I do to cycle the tank? I am not too sure.. i just let it run to be honest The first thing I let it run without fish for 4 hours before I put the fish in.... I bought this tank off trademe and I made a serious a mistake of replacing all the gravels overnight and not cleaning the gravels thoroughly. I bought a 40l pack from Hollywood fishfarm and the gravels are very very dirty Daily operation - I change the water every week, or twice a week depends on the nitrite readings (at one stage, i reached 100 ppm for a while and I just keep on changing water). I clean up the filter wool twice a week these days (used to be once a week, until I hit that 100 ppm nitrite problem). I add stress zyme and accu clear everything I change the water. What's the best test kit to test the water actually? does the testing paper work? http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =190988739 Latest discovery - two of my fish got this red mark sore on the edge of the side fin (the one next to the gill) and he seems struggling to swim. Other than the fin problems, my fish eat well, swim well (i.e. not really stay near the filter, on top or at the bottom all the time) and they are very active.... Please help >.<

since i have set up a new tank, i have numerous disease break out - white spot, flukes, fin rot, dropsy. 2 fishes died so far and most fish with very ugly tail (12 fish in total). I have been keeping on with changing water, cleaning out filter already and have already reduced the amount of food I have tried white spot remover, tonic, furan2 and melafix and I have stopped everything as well... What should I do now? My fish has having holes in the tail (they have double fin and the holes start developing where two fins joined). One of the tail was torn/split in the middle... is there anything I should do? Also, how often should I check the water quality?
-
hey ! may i ask what happened to your oranda afterwards? My oranda got Dropsy as well and I just discovered that yesterday and my mum said it has been like that at least for 2 days already

Thanks - i have been changing and cleaning filter. The nitrate level is much better now but my fish tail still got the red stuff on it.... got streaks AND some red 'pimple'. Is there anything I can do to help tail growth? I had a very bad fin rot a while back and I am just wondering how I can help my fishy to recover... how long does it take to regrow fin anyway??
-
I discover there's some red stuff on some of my oranda's tail - it looks a bit like a scratched acne... the tail is slightly torn where the acne is... I tried to catch a pic of that but my fish is just swimming too fast... Also, one of my fish got a lot of tiny little holes on the tail, it has been like that for years... can someone tell me what it is?? Is there any way to promote tail growth?? I have started my first journey of breeding, half of my babies died in the first round but I am getting better at it !! I look forward to raising my second batch !

it has been good.. the flukes start dying down but I can't completely get rid of it.....my other fish starts losing colour for some reasons.. hopefully it's nothing serious ....
-
i went to Hollywood fish farm and apparently it's flukes rather than white spot... It still needs some work but my fishy looks alright now.. Thanks everyone !
-
I went to hollywood fish farm yesterday because the white spot on my fish wouldn't go away after 1 month. Apparantly it's not white spot, it's something called fluke (hope i have the name right) Now I am feeding my fish with garlic soaked pellets and hopefully the problem will go away.. perhaps you can try this?
-
Thanks guys !!! another question - does my goldfish truly have white spot? These white spots have been on this fish for over 4 weeks.. i just can't get rid of it.. i have followed all treatments (tonic + white spot cure) but these white spots just wouldn't go away !!! should I repeat my treatment? the fish is eating well....

I just spotted my fish starts losing scales in the last couple of days and today I discovered my tank is covered by eggs... I am just wondering whether the scale loss is linked to breeding or I have more problems with bacterial

perhaps get a UV light filter? it works quite nicely

(56K) Koura tanks, as if there weren't enough of them...
piggyvir replied to ninjafroglet's topic in New Zealand Natives
how big will they grow? -
same - i just bought my first cainister filter - Eheim Pro II 2028 !! 1 hour old at the moment - I can't wait to set it up this weekend !!! (or tonight if I can get home early)
-
yeah - i have been following the instructions as per this post and I just can't find other clues what's going on with my fish.... I have been treating it with the above method for more than 2 weeks - all of my fish got over it except this one...
-
that must be a lot of work to maintain your pond !!
-
I put my perlscale to an isolated tank with tonic because of the white spot. Since then she starts having fin rot and the white spot disappears.. so I put she back to the main tank and the white spot comes back overnight... i don't know whatelse I can do to help now :(
-
emm - just curious - one of the fish keeps on scratching against the gravels. I guess it is sick (pretty obvious) and I am just wondering will the tonic help at all? What kind of disease is it? He has no scale lost so far though (which makes me wonder - my other fishy that don't scratch against gravel lose a few scales but this one doesn't!!) I don't know the proper term to search on the internet...
-
the red lump looks very sore though.... Thanks everyone for your help so far !! I am definitely more interested in keeping goldfish.... it's so much fun ! this is what my tank look like 1 month ago am i overstocking? hope not
-
really??????? whyyyyy????
-
update - i bought a tank off trademe just in case I need to isolate some of the fish. The gentlemen said white spot requires light to grow and his recommendation is to cover the tank with a sheet for a week together with the treatment. I am putting this in trial.... the fish are still swimming at the moment...

Thank you. I rushed to the pet shop (animates) and the lady suggested to use Tonic instead of melafix as melafix doesn't kill fungal diseases (?). i don't totally believe her but I think it's not a bad choice given that all things failed now. The reason I do this gradually because i don't have a 'hospital' set up. I have now bought a glass tank off trademe (25 bucks) and I will probably transport all of my fish there when I take the gravels out... I want to install an undergravel filter and my parents are strong believer that the gravels are dirty (i did vaccum it) and I should get the gravels out... My first big tank experience has been tough so far... Does that thing on his head look like SAP???? it's not as red today after putting more melafix and salt into the tank last night....
-
Let's see whether this works I also discovered that there's fungal disease i think, there's like cotton ball on the fin - I don't quite understand the solution that I found on the web, what should I do? I have been changing water everyday now, using melafix and aquarium salt.... In between that, I am trying to pull my gravel from the tank and the water is not crystal clear, but it's not cloudy.... Fungus (Saprolegnia) Symptoms: Tufts of dirty, cotton-like growth on the skin, can cover large areas of the fish, fish eggs turn white. Fungal attacks always follow some other health problem like parasitic attack, injury, or bacterial infection. The symptoms are a gray or whitish growth in and on the skin and/or fins of the fish. Eventually, if left untreated, these growths will become cottony looking. The fungus, if left untreated, will eventually eat away on the fish until it finally dies. After ascertaining the initial cause of the fungus and remedying that, use a solution of phenoxethol at 1% in distilled water. Add 10 ml of this solution per liter of aquarium water. Repeat after a few days if needed, but only once more as three treatments could be dangerous to aquarium inhabitants. If the symptoms are severe the fish can be removed from the aquarium and swabbed with a cloth that has been treated with small amounts of povidone iodine or mercurochrome. i feel so bad ... perhaps they are stressed because I am trying to get the gravel out????
