  1. I'm trying to create a ground cover with lilaeopsis novae-zelandiae - same thing - it's getting vertical growth quite quickly, but it's that spreading and denseness that makes a cool carpet. That's the awesome thing about photos, you can see the changes over time so you know what you're doing is working! It's going to be such an awesome tnak when it grows out. Have you decided on a full stocking list yet?
  2. That hair grass is going to look amazing when it fills in. How awesome! Any idea how long it might take to fill out?
  3. The algae is back overnight? Wow. I think at this point we have to figure out whether your water is high in phosphate or your rock/substrate is leaching phosphate. It's either got to be that, or something's up with the filtration. I might have missed this, but are you on town or tap water? What area are you in? Can you take some substrate out, put it in, say a litre of fresh water (test the phosphate first), then test again in a couple of days? Do the same with one of the rocks. If something is leaching out of the rock or substrate, if you eliminate that it should get rid of the issue.
  4. Oh really?! How does the process work? How long does it take?
  5. the white dots look like eggs sort of. They're definitely attached to the plant, nothing that surface agitation will get rid of. I wonder if they're some sort of way these guys reproduce? I planted pretty heavily from the get-go. I've got a tiny bit of film algae on the glass, but the tank has been set up for a few months without me even cleaning the glass, so I think it's doing well!
  6. I was too busy looking at all the colour to even notice the seahorse! Awesome!!!!
  7. Knit is also the correct past tense. It's like learned/learnt.
  8. You definitely deserve a wine! What a big job, and wow it looks awesome now!
  9. Yes they do expire - I usually keep mine a year before I start seeing dodgy results. I think when they're exposed to oxygen they degrade quicker. You could always test against another kit (like fish store) and see if the results are consistent.
  10. Cool. How long until they're fully grown? And if I leave my green water sitting on the windowsill (got some corgette in there) how long will it take to become green?
  11. My bumblebee gobies went crazy for the newly hatched brine shrimp, but it would be nice to provide them with something a bit bigger. In order to make them bigger, I'll need to feed them. Any ideas what to feed them? I was thinking of starting a green water culture, what do you think?
  12. Yay! If you decide to go the scrubber method, please show your working. I love seeing them come to life.
  13. Excuse, where are the pics?? :spop:
  14. They tend to be nitrate factories as they trap detritus.
  15. I also noticed today that my indian fern has white dots on the V's of leaves. What is this?
  16. I'm dosing excel and have some driftwood in my tank that's discolouring the water slightly. Will using carbon affect the excel, or are they cool to use together?
  17. The SPCA are pretty good about having their cats in a good environment with lots of toys. Sophia, when will we see pics of your new kitty?
  18. Our sand in NZ is mostly silica sand. It's non porous so the bacteria count is low compared to live rock. Sadly, there's no way to cheat this into going faster. It takes as long as it takes.
  19. I added three bumblebee gobies today. This is not an awesome pic but you can see one perched on the java fern. Gives some scale. They're currently zooming around eating the brine shrimp that somehow managed to hatch in FW. Super cute!
  20. Also, once you've captured something and had it in your tank, never release it again.
  21. Being the good cat mother I am, I made my kitten a catnip bunny tonight. It took me about an hour to knit while drinking and watching TV. Jack was SO happy to play with his bunny. So happy, in fact, that he ripped off the ears, ate most of the catnip, then attempted to pick a fight with his own reflection. Here's the sad bunny, no more than 15 minutes after I finished knitting it.
  22. I had some when I was a kid. If I remember, the water was still. Can't remember what you had to feed them, but it was some powder.
  23. How long do they take to grow up? Will the stuff in the tank be enough for them to feed on if I want them to grow into adults, or will I have to sup feed them?
