  1. Does the same apply to a $15k boob job??
  2. +1 I'd encourage any retailers reading this not to order them in, there just aren't people with tanks here to house them, anyone who has seen colossal ones in public aquaria would agree...
  3. Yeah, I had a massive undercut with hair down to my shoulders in the mid 90s.... And for everyone who says "piercings are alright because they're not permanent like tattos", I've still got a small hole in my tongue and my ears that were stretched to a 12 gauge sleeper (iirc) haven't ever healed properly and are still visible today. Took the ear rings out 7 years ago and the tongue out about5-6 years ago.
  4. lol I must be getting old, I had to google "snakebites"... Barrie, can't imagine you with a huge afro and beard, i guess we were all young once!
  5. I forgot about the reef, bugger, salt water and carpet aren't a good mix! At least the big tank is still standing, I looked at the stand on my 6' this morning with no diagonal bracing and contemplated what could happen.... IIRC, from my grandparents who lived in Hastings most their lives and were in the 1931 big one, isn't that perfect earthquake weather?
  6. rug doctor could be a good idea as it will remove any fishy smell the tank water could leave. I've used the heater + dehumidifier on small to medium spills, but I'd imagine with a big one like yours the rug doctor would be the best option, then run the dehumidifier for a few days. How much water did the big tank lose? Lucky the other tank is empty...
  7. These things seem better/worse than convicts!! Only seems like a few months since they were in the shops and now their young are for sale!
  8. Whats going to block it? Unless you're keeping lots of plants [unlikely with marine] I can't see it being a problem. I had a 14"+ tyre track eel sitting in the spraybar of my 6' tank running a grunty Laguna 7500 pump and it didn't overflow, just squirted a bit faster from some of the holes! Unless you plan on designing the plumbing/spray bar to JUST handle the normal flow of water to try to reduce the noise you'd have to have a pretty big blockage for it to overflow. I don't think there is enough water in the sump of either my 5' or 6' to be able to fill up the overflow and overflow the tank if the plumbing did somehow become blocked....
  9. Single pipe on all mine apart from the 1400L because of the flow and the lack of vertical drop between the overflows and the sump. Never had a problem with blockages, but I also don't keep plants [in my tanks at least], you could easily design the spray bar/drip system to be overflow-proof without drilling two holes.
  10. Politics. This one is much longer established and has more posts, the other one is more relaxed with things like topics [politics etc], language, image size etc...
  11. Shouldn't you save money because you don't have to drive there to buy stuff and see a nice new pleco and end up spending three times as much on impulse buys? Would work for me...
  12. Where's there fish section? I thought thats what this hobby was all about. :-?
  13. I couldn't find anything like that for my 1400L south american tank, so I went with some of the "peru altum" (actually scalare) F1 angels. I too prefer more natural looking fish over the man made strains, with the only real exception being high grade asian aros.
  14. I'd get in touch with a local tankmaker who has experience drilling tanks. Trying to save a few bucks with a bit of DIY could cost you a whole new tank if you get it wrong. Get the fitting first and he'll know what size hole to drill for it.
  15. Awesome! Given how plentiful they were a while back its good to see someone breeding them again.
  16. There are plenty of other interesting cichlids you could keep in that tank, jack dempsey, firemouth, salvini etc.
  17. I haven't really got any space to offer, but Henward looked into renting one of those storage unit things, the bonus being they come with power so you don't have to worry about the heating bill. Maybe he'll pitch in his 2c on the subject.
  18. Either that or you'll discover cars/girls/booze/etc and/or realise the impracticalities of flatting with a large fish tank just aren't worth it and get rid of them? I sold my 5' set up before moving out of home and went back to a modest 3' for many years before expanding again once settled. Just think about the commitment you're making with two potentially very large, hungry and long-lived fish. Its not just the tank size you need to worry about, you'll need grunty filters and large water changes to keep up with them.
  19. I'd agree with P44, a 5x2' footprint would be best if you want to grow the fish out to their maximum potential, could probably get away with 20" height but 2' would be better. I know people often recommend smaller, IMO a fish with the potential to get that big needs more room. Maybe a 4x2x2' would do for a pair, at the very least. There was a monstorous oscar at Animates in Mt Eden a few weeks back, in the hex tanks where there plants were (and corals once upon a time). Was the biggest I've ever seen, at least a solid 12" by my conservative guesstimate, maybe bigger. Anyone who says they can be kept in a 55g has obviously never seen a fish like that. And as for Animates little info card on the tank with the small oscars saying "15cm and 165L"....

    Driftwood

Front or back half? :-? I wouldn't have thought there would be a problem, but it might pay to be safe rather than sorry. How much do you value your fish?
