  1. Possibly if it was large enough, you'd need more than one though as they do best in groups. The shops will tell you 3 minimum, but more are better. Apparently they get quite aggressive and predatory when preparing to breed... There would be much better choices for fish to cull your fry though.
  2. My email; Got a reply with a whole bunch of random pictures of fish, crabs, snails and shrimp. Many of the fish pics are photographs of pictures from Axelrods Encyclopedia of Fresh Water Aquarium Fish, I recognise the pictures and the symbols below the pics, and its obvious they are a photo of a photo. I'll tell him I need pictures of the actual fish I am interested in and see what he can produce....
  3. I just received this email; The fact that it was a Nigerian-based unsolicited email made me immediately think scam. How ever, because it was based around fish/reptiles it made me think it was far more thorough and targeted than the usual "I am prince Mbutu and need you to help me leave the country with $72billion" type scams. So I googled them, and the first hit was their own website, which on the surface looks fairly legit; http://www.fsaquatics.com/index.html How ever, about 5 lines into their stock list I see "Osteoglossum Africana", hmm. The whole website seems a bit basic and unprofessional, and I'm still sure it is part of an elaborate scam. I'm really interested to see if anyone else from the forums I visit also received the email, I haven't signed up to anywhere new for some time now, so I'm guessing he's picking email addresses from one of the ones I regularly visit. Anyway, will be interesting to see if he replies to my email...
  4. $4.5k+, depends on the farm and the quality of the fish. Saying "VIP Chilli red" doesn't mean that much as they're just brand names that different farms use. Price should be based on the quality of the actual fish.

I'm certainly not lumping you in this category P44, but it amazes me that with the number of penny-pinchers in this hobby who want to pay bottom dollar for everything and baulk at paying more than $30 for a fish that people are willing to pay money to save themselves a week or two when setting up a tank. I have no doubt that it can speed up the cycling process, but IMO if you haven't got the patience to cycle a tank properly then you're in the wrong hobby. I certainly wouldn't trust it to instantly establish brand new filters for my expensive fish......
  6. Hollywood have already had one customer nagging them about them, if they could get them they would have already done so long ago..... There are two problems; A; they aren't on the list and B; they aren't actually a described species (just an unclassified Geophagus Sp.) so I'm not even sure its possible to get them added to the list until they have been described. All we can do is hope someone imports them under the name "surinamensis", which wouldn't be entirely untrue given that 15 years ago when that name was added to the list it was used to cover pretty much every Geophagus that wasn't a brasiliensis or jurupari....
  7. Given that most of the floor of the tank is covered in plants with a big empty space above, I'd go with a big school of something, and not cichlids. Rummy noses would look great, but really its all down to personal preference.
  8. lol, normally I'd say no way but it should be fine for length of time you keep your fish for...
  9. Its a long read, but if you like Amazon biotopes then its well worth it... http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forum ... p?t=296788 and an example of what to expect in the thread; http://www.simulationeight.net/fish2010 ... f/full.jpg
  10. Hollywood usually have a few in stock. A group of the smaller species like threadfins would be good, there is also another smaller species that is blue and yellow and has kinda upturned fins, but the name completely escapes me at the moment.
  11. I've also got bunnings builders sand in my tank; http://s88.photobucket.com/albums/k186/ ... Medium.jpg http://s88.photobucket.com/albums/k186/ ... 3Large.jpg http://s88.photobucket.com/albums/k186/ ... 0Large.jpg Not very dark though. I've got a couple of sacks worth of that dark grey grit stuff you can get from HFF or Stone and Water World, going cheap, need it out of the garage...
  12. and very expensive to feed!! My two old big IT's used to eat heaps, and would have eaten even more if I let them. I know what you mean about descaling fish too, took me a few seconds to figure out why the water was shimmering after feeding my big dat a feeder!
  13. Yeah their mouth shoots forward which sucks in a heap of water and engulfs the food. If you watch one yawn you see it in slow motion, amazing just how big their mouths are.
  14. Contracts for what? Contracts for contrast? I love the noise the AT's make when they first hit the pellets, like a big SNAP.
  15. Black aro looks awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  16. Yeah the terror looks great! I see what you mean about the big tank looking full. Love the spotty clown knife.
  17. Same goes for cars; cheap, fast, reliable, its only going to be two out of three...
  18. Yep, although its up to you how dark you make it, in fact you don't even need to make it "blackwater" to have that set up. Tangled driftwood, a few little plants, leaf litter and clear water is still going to look good.
  19. Get a price from HFF for a powdercoated steel stand, just specify that you want a flat base to spread the weight over the floor, for that size tank it shouldn't be too much over $500 (I think?). You don't want to mess around putting big tanks on furniture that was never designed to support that sort of weight, if you can't DIY then I'd seriously suggest you bite the bullet and pay for a quality stand. Just add up the potential cost if the tank fails and it will seem like a good investment. As for the floor, I' have a 1500x600x600 tank and a 1200x500x500 tank on timber floors no problem, just make sure the load is spread evenly over the joists.
  20. Blackwater stream, a few smaller whiptails, corys, and a big school of cardinals.
  21. I'm not doing a pupu springs biotope though. Awesome spot, would love to check it out some day
  22. Nature doesn't have crystal clear water. Thats my excuse/reasoning.....

    help

I too usually ignore threads with vague titles. Other forums I browse threads with one-line titles like that get edited or deleted...
  24. Sure does. In fact I've got two in my garage you can have..... if you ask HaNs nicely...
