  1. Here are the images Caryl send me. Not to clear but perhaps helpful for identification. If you need better pictures please email Caryl. She's really good at sending large files [ This Message was edited by: on 2001-09-08 03:18 ]
  2. Hi Caryl, Do you have a photo of it? Perhaps email me the jpg and I'll post it

    Peat & pH

My 2 cents worth. I find that controlling the pH around 6.8-70 works well with CO2 (If you can get it from a good bottle with a good regulator). It's good for your plant growth and a kH of about 4 will buffer it so that the pH will not drop to low. Personally I'm not a fan of altering pH with strong acids like sulfuric. Warren is right about the peat though. It lowers pH gradually and it depends on the source and type of peat as well. Just experiment Caryl

    Heat Pads

Caryl, could you email to me as well and I'll post it as an article on the main site. I remember Grant writing something about this for Aquarium World or was that the heating cables?

    sick betta

I did a quick search on google searchengine constipation+fish+epsom and found quite a few webpages about this. here is one and here
  6. I'm working on it. I'm traveling in July and August. The plant database and the fnzas.org.nz website should be up and running after I get back, which will be end of August.
  7. Thanks Caryl wish I'd been there. Photos anyone ??? Posters to put on this site, volunteers??? I'll do the html for those who can't do it themselves or you could submit using submit news button or even better email me html with pics etc and I will make it a nice page on this site.
  8. I was not at this years conference unfortunately. So, those of you that went, let's hear it. What happened!!? This could/should be a long thread [ This message was edited by: Cees on 2001-06-05 08:01 ]

    BRINE SHRIMP

In my experience storage at higher temperature and high humidity (in case of opened containers) quickly reduces the quality of the brine shrimp cysts. I store all of my (un)opened containers in the fridge and keep only a weeks supply in my 'warm' fishroom. So, yes you can get a bad batch and as Caryl suggested, probably due to incorrect 'storage'. The following is quoted from Brine Shrimp Direct "Brine shrimp cysts are best stored at low humidity, low temperature conditions to maintain their hatching quality. For long term storage, store at temperatures below 50° F (10° C) but above freezing." [ This message was edited by: Cees on 2001-05-31 20:03 ]
  10. Hello biziboy, welcome to the 'New Zealand Fishroom'. It's good to see that someone is breeding betta splendens and willing to exchange ideas in these forums. I haven't bred betta splendens myself yet but I'm always interested in other peoples efforts. Perhaps you could tell me (us) a bit more about your own betta splendens breeding experiences.
  11. Derek I personally don't have the Hygrophila polysperma anymore  but from memory mine was the 'non-hairy type' but then again I never grew it emersed. Paul, can I place a copy of your picture of Hygrophila polysperma on this site for easy reference (credited of course, with link) Derek, could you take some to clubnight on Thursday, I can bring a digital camera! Pauls webpage with the flowering Hygrophila polysperma is here [ This message was edited by: Cees on 2001-05-07 06:50 ]
  12. I've been breeding guppies for quite sometime but I'm considering expanding to other species. Simple question, what would be a good killifish to start with?
  13. What's the brineshrimp supply in New Zealand (or the rest of the world for that matter) like these days?
  14. Warren, Welcome back > Maybe the website could have 2 sections to the plant list Good idea! The New Zealand plant survey would be an excellent start. I asked it before, could someone send that to me in electronic form? Preferrable in a table or comma delimited list (mysql dump would be best) but I take any form (any keen typists out there?) I can put that on the site with scanned images of the drawings easily (pending FNZAS permission of course) That could be the starting point for the other section, user contributed annotations.
  15. testing, please ignore
  16. Ok, good responses overall What I need now is a volunteer with php/mysql programming experience to help me out Don't worry, I'll try to get a 'first draft' or alpha version on this sit ein a few weeks time. What I could use is a list of commom/scientific plant names, electronic form, so that I don't have to type it all. I'd like people to be able to select a plant from the list, and than tick a box saying yes I've got this one! That way the threshold for entering data in the database will be lowered.
  17. Thanks for all the replies. Good to see someting happening here. I was personally thinking along the lines of starting with a blank/empty database with a web interface. We start of empty and all of you can enter what you grow and/or have available. (There it is again, user participation) I personally don't care too much about 'the official lists' in this context. They are nice complete lists but are 'dead' in a sense, they do not necessarily reflect the 'current status'. Okay, yes a plant 'has been seen in NZ', so what. What I would like to see happening is a community sharing info and sharing plants. I think there are plenty of good sources online (better than I/we will ever be able to compile) about identification of plants hence my suggestion of links to other websites. Think about the aquarist who doesn't live in the main centres. Wouldn't it be nice if he/she could go online, find out who's growing what, send a few emails and perhaps obtain a few otherwise hard to get plants. I can come up with quite a few other scenarios like that. So, what I need (and most posts have given me plenty of ideas) is a list of fields required and a bit of a description of what form it should take. Here is my field list sofar. - Common name - Scientific name (perhaps split up in genus/family etc etc (I need to study the plant literature a bit better for that) - Names of members growing/keeping it - Names of members having stock available to share - A nice pic of plant - Photo's and dates of plant flowering in NZ if available (positive id) - A link to external source for identification/conditions (could be the NZ plant guide) Web interface: Admin Registered user can - add a listing to database - edit a listing - remove a listing (Of course all user based, you can only manipulate your own listing) General: - Browse the database - search on plantname, username, plant available etc Hows that?! Does this concept sound familiar, is there some other application that works the same way (I was thinking about auction websites but I'm not sure yet) btw, if the 'official lists' are available electronically and not 'copyrighted' why not submit them as news to this site (or send them to me by email and I'll post them
  18. Caryl, For someone claiming to be 'new to computing' (or are you not talking about yourself?) you're doing ok!! You even include smilies in your posts!! About BBcode, there is a link to help/info on BBcode on the lefthand side when you post to forum. My view on buttons, if you see them click them, experiment! About php/mysql, if you don't know what it is than don't worry about it. OK, enough computer talk. Real question now, I just looked at the 19997 edition of the FNZAS Plant Survey. Is that available electronically? Would be a nice starting point for an online plant database
  19. Derek, I agree, any image is better than no image at all. What I was really thinking about was plants flowering in New Zealand. Would be nice to keep some kind of scorecard for this. Would plant have to be grouped into categories? Perhaps using proper scientific naming conventions etc
  20. Wouldn't it be nice if you could visit this website and browse a database of aquatic plants that are available in New Zealand. That database would tell you what the species was, who's growing it, a nice picture of the plant as seen in NZ, whether the grower had plants available to share around etc etc. This idea was suggested in another post in this forum. Let's generate a few ideas for this 'database'. My initial ideas - at least an admin interface online (share the work load) - more than just a table on a single page - only plants as seen in New Zealand with images as taken in New Zealand - links to species identification database somewhere else on the web As far as I'm concerned I can adapt any available 'Open Source' package that would do the trick, I prefer mysql/php [ This message was edited by: Cees on 2001-04-27 17:46 ] [ This message was edited by: Cees on 2001-04-27 17:47 ] [ This message was edited by: Cees on 2001-04-27 17:49 ]
  21. I'm starting a new topic called NZ Aquatic Plant Database Online where we can discuss what form that should take. I'm leaving this topic open for all to say Hi to Paul [ This message was edited by: Cees on 2001-04-27 17:55 ]
  22. A plant database of auquatic plants available in New Zealand is a good idea and I would be happy to host it here. All I need is some suggestions of what's required for the databae. Would be nice if I could grab a package of the web somewhere, if not I'll make something myself. Give me a few ideas of what's a minimum requirement for such a database.
  23. Hi Paul, Welcome to the New Zealand Fishroom. Thanks for your complement and the offer for a link to this site. As you can see, not much happening here yet but hopefully this will change in the near future. Spread the word among New Zealand Aquarium lovers. Your website Pauls Aquatic Plants isn't bad either . I'm planning a few additions to this site including an image gallery. I'd like to collect photo's of aquatic plants flowering in New Zealand and display them here with details of who, what, where, when and how. What do you think, good idea? It's good to see we have another plant expert on board. I've seen a few others in the memberslist but they haven't announced themselves here yet, perhaps a little shy
  24. Well, I just installed version 5-beta3. Everything should load a lot faster. It eliminates a lot of nasty bugs. Some of my modifications have disappeared in the upgrade though. In the next couple of weeks I'll be making a few modifications to get the site back to where I want it to be. Enjoy
  25. I forgot to mention this. You do not need to be an UHAS member to reply to this post!
