    Discus

OK I want to have a discus tank lightly planted. This wont happen till early next year when I get my new tank. I have been doing some homework on them i the meantime. Can someone please explain to me why the Discus on trade me range from 40 then jump to 80 upwards. Is it ok to buy the cheaper ones or should I buy the 130 plus? I haven't seen many in the LFS. It is a big investment and I don't want to get them home and have them die or be stunted quality.

    WCMM ratio

Ok so what is a WCMM?
  3. My BN is bouncing I'ld say swimming but its more a splash from plant to plant round the tank like its Spring or a new zest for life or something. Seems fine eating and the usual but I'm wondering if he is bullying my other fish. Everytime they see him?her comming they swim away real fast. I got up this morning to find two dead fish (neon & Black Phantom Tectra) All the others seems fine water tests are all good. I am hoping the two are a one off. I thought these were supposed to be friendly placid types. He (named Rocky) was adopted with my new tank so I don't know how old he is but has lived with all my other fish for at least 8 months.
  4. Just being clowns. I leave mine in all the time and if I have recently cleaned the tank they swin around it. Most entertaining.
  5. Dumb question I know but I read about adding salt all the time. Is this added because the fish are sick or just as an everyday thing? I have a community tank should I be adding salt when I clean the filters to keep the fish happy?
  6. Thats interesting. I have the AR510 as well. My filter is set up with noodles on the bottom, then the black pads then the white stuff with carbon inside. Actually I took the white sponge out at the moment because I find if you dont change it every 3-4 weeks you get these particals that float on the top. I have two filters running in this tank because I found the built in filter useless. I only has 9 guppys and 4 platys in this tank.
  7. When I asked HFF about female (Drawf Gourami's I have 4 males Orange and Blue) I was told they didn't have any because no one wanted them as they are dull in colour but they could order me some in.
  8. Thanks for your help. I really dislike the snails. Will get another tank and resetup my guppys/platys and desnail the plants that belong with them.
  9. Ok I know this questions been asked before because I read it now can't find it. I want to move my plants from my snail infested tank to a new setup. What do I use to kill any on the plants and then are the plants ok to use again in the new setup?
  10. This is interesting as my ph has always been on about 7. I live on the North Shore too and just tested my tanks ph is on 6. Tested the tap water and ph is 6.4. Maybe its all that rain we had. I hadn't tested for about three weeks.

    A few pics

nice pics the gold rams are pretty
  12. I have all males as they apparently are even meaner towards the females especially as they get older. My DGs now are fine living with phantom tetras & neons in a 135ltr tank
  13. I started with a tank the same size as yours with two DG's and neons. They were fun to start with then the DG's started attacking each other. I was told to get some more so they could share the aggression around so I did. Big mistake as the fighting got worse horrible to watch. Sent all the DG's back to the shop. In the end brought a bigger tank and now have 4 DG's that get along fine. They each have their own corner and chase each other around more of a game now.
  14. Hi Carol My parents used to breed and show Samoyeds lovely dogs. Me I just have a SPCA special he's probably a boarder collie cream & brown. Welcome to the fish site.
  15. I'm not too sure never tested straight from the tap will test tonight.
  16. When you put your girls in the breeding traps (I do have one) how long to you leave her in there as I did this once for 24 hours but felt guilty as she looked like she was sulkng and trying to get out the bottom.
  17. I read somewhere that shells raise the ph level. one of my tanks is at 6.5 I'm going to add a couple of shells to raise it as I have guppys and platys in it and they like over 7.0.
  18. After watching my male guppies continually eat the babys as they hatch from the female I looked in my tank last night and I have 4 healthy looking babes. So exciting I couldn't stop watching and they kept disappearing I was worried the Platys would eat them. :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: I assume they are guppy baby's not platys
  19. You could get an automatic timer but I don't think 3 days will hurt. I did the 3 day blackout and was more worried that the fish would eat each other
  20. Thank you all for your help. I'll give it a go.
  21. I am really tired of snails in my tanks. Tried the snail trap and picking them out one by one. So I have decided to buy some Zebra Striata Loaches. Does any one know if they will be alright with my BN's. The BN's are about 13cm and one is 6cm. Also can we get them in NZ? The Clown Loaches get to big for my tank. Even if they are lovely.
  22. Thanks Whetu I'm on the North Shore. Get really attached to my fish. Probably would end up by getting another tank to keep them in and my familly would cry  . I think I'll go to the Animates sale on the weekend and see if I can get a couple of loaches. Unless you are on the Shore/town and them I can dorp them off to you.....
  23. My tank is only 130ltr onther one is 75ltrs. Do you think it would be big enough while they are little? I have DG, BN's neons in one and Guppys in the other.
  24. I'm pulling out about 10 snails a day from my tanks don't know what they are but if anyone wants them to feed their fish let me know. Thought about getting a clown loach to get rid of them but it'll grow too big.
