  1. I think I like Caryl's version better!
  2. isn't it weird where that saying comes up! I'm sure I've seen it in the movie Anger Management as well, but I can never remember it when i need it! Thanks TinyTawnyKitten!
  3. does anyone know that mantra type thing that people often say at those...ummm.....meetings? Not asking if anyone's an alcoholic or anything, but it goes something like God grant me the serenity to accept the things i can't change, blah blah Anyone know the whole thing, I'm really curious to know

    Useful Fish...

Hi Mac, I understand completely what you are saying - I have cories and bottom dwellers who regularly get there sinking tablets, and I offer ALL my fish a variety of foods, no matter what their preferences are. All I'm asking is if anyone knows of fish that do provide a useful service in the tank outside of their own regular lifestyle and eating regime. For example, i know that skunk loaches will eat snails, but that's not to say that if I kept a lone one in a tank, all I would feed it was snails. I'd like to be able to offer others advice on how to use fish to solve a problem in a more natural/organic sort of way, hence I asked the question. Not making a dig, just offering a reason as to why I asked the question. One I haven't had an answer to is Planaria(?) worms??? I have these flat worm like things in my cold water axolotl tank, but wondered if there was a fish that would eat these if they turned up in a tropical tank.
  5. YAY! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: I'm so excited! I have completely cleared my 'busy' schedule so I can help out all weekend! WOOOWHOOOO!
  6. how many entries does that make in total now?
  7. sounds like my husbands cure for everything - watch TV! I'm one of those restless types - the ads in Shortland Street were put there for me to do laundry, wash dishes, vacuum, and bath children  And I fold the laundry during the programme (I'm a sad individual )
  8. unfortunately for me, doing that just reminds me of how many tanks I have running, and how soon the power company will turn off the power because we don't have enough money to pay the power bill  I'm even thinking I may have to shut them all down bar the three largest ones and sell off a bit off stuff until we get back on our feet.....but if I go there I'll get stressed again! Now which room in the house needs a good going over...?
  9. Just wondered what everyone else does when they're stressed out? I was on a bummer yesterday - got turned down for another job, AGAIN - and so I went on a cleaning binge and had a BIG tidy out of my laundry. If it's not cleaning, it's gardening but that's more of a relaxing thing for me. So, what do you do when stressed out?
  10. you can buy black food colouring paste which might be a bit easier to use in your case Ira - try a specialty cake shop or bakery. Also, i think Hansells bought out a new range of food colourings that includes black. Wouldn't hurt to try....
  11. How have you gone Tommy? I'm only asking because i have 4 females and 2 stunning males (both in full breeding dress!), and would like to try breeding them once i have dividers for my 4ft breeding tank. I have a small goldfish bowl and some riccia - do you think that would be ok/enough to make the male start building a nest? They're currently in my community tank and so haven't had a chance to get much action  keep us up to date with how it goes
  12. I've had all the weird dreams in the past, woken up with a start, done the whole starting snoring and woke myself up thing too, but never anything like this, and what gets me more is that it has stayed with me all day. Kinda creepy, but I'm taking my herbal sleeping pills tonight to relax a little more - that is if the hail storms and police sirens don't keep me awake!
  13. I know fish are pretty and lower blood pressure, blah blah blah, but I wanted to know what fish are out there that are useful, or serve a purpose in the tank. So far, I have these: Siamese Algae Eater - does what the name says Skunk Loach - good for munching down on snails rumor has it Mollies are good at grazing on algae too, and I was also told that Tadpoles can help control algae in outdoor ponds. Anyone got any others they're willing to share?
  14. I had something weird happen to me last night, but not of the shopping experience kind....... I had my first thrashing about, had to be woken up nightmare dream. I distinctly remember my hands pushing someone away and saying stop, and hubby told me I was tossing around and pushing him and calling out no in my sleep, then he decided to try and wake me. Good thing he did, God knows what THAT dream was about!
  15. On behalf of the Upper Hutt Aquarium Society, I would like to offer the services of our very own Jolly Olly the Giant Goldfish! Our club uses him as a sign post for where our meetings are held. KMAC might like to use him to give our visitors to the show an idea of exactly where the show is being held. He even comes with his own night light! Here's his pic: So look out for him when you go over to drop off your fish and visit the show!
  16. Here's a pic of our very own Jolly Olly: Look out for him!
  17. ha ha Caryl! Yes, if you win the jar I will let you take the lollies home too. I have heard Adele likes lollies though, and my 4 year old is eyeing up the jar as well..... Maybe someone can put in a few entries for you and you might get a surprise in the mail!

  19. I had thought about having a skunk loach in the tank, and/or some cories just to keep the bottom a little cleaner. Then maybe a few guppies or tetras to get a little benefit from having fish in the tank. I have unfortunately got a snail problem with some of the plants I recently purchased, but using things like Snail Rid never seems to work very well for me, and it can be nightmare trying to pick them all off. Any other suggestions for removing the snails?
  20. I've been using my fry raising tank to grow Ambulia and Hygo cuttings, but someone suggested I do it a bit more permanently and sell the plants on when they're a good size. Did you use a CO2 thingee? I'm not up with the play on those and whether I would need one or not.
  21. Do you have a list of what you have already? I need to borrow dads camera because mine just isn't good enough, but that's easily done - he'll be bringing it with him to hubbies 40th next weekend and has said i can have it for a few weeks YAY :bounce: Post what you have and I'll see what I can do....I still have no job and have time on my hands.....
  22. Does anyone or has anyone had a tank set up specifically just for growing plants in? I have been offered a 3 foot tank, and some of my plants do so well for me, i was considering setting up a tank just to grow cuttings and runners in. Just wondered if anyone was doing it and what sort of medium used, lighting etc Any help would be greatly appreciated!
  23. So do we have any pictures yet or are we still waiting? I have a few plants and I just got some more, but it's not worth me getting the camera out if we already have pics of all the plants i have. I was considering getting a 3 foot tank from a friend and setting it up to grow plants in - maybe it could be a good thing to get a tank and a camera, and go for it!
  24. Cool, I might take mine out and slowly acclimatise them to the cooler waters, and see how they go. I think I need a few more females to add to the group - I initially bought 3 girls and a guy, but lost 2 girls recently. Right, well that solves that problem! Thanx! :bounce:
  25. Just wondered how many people keep their Leopard Fish outdoors? I have 2 in a tank indoors, but thought I might like to put them outside in the pond with my mountain minnows and goldfish. Would they be ok? I have a fountain pump to keep the pond clean and the surface agitated so it doesn't ice over in Winter, but seen as it's warming up I thought now might be a good time. Any ideas?
