  1. Does seem a bit too cosy, even if there aren't very many decorations. :-?

Oh dear god, what have you got? Sounds...interesting! Have you thought about taking a few out and taking them along to your local pet shop to see of someone there can tell you what they are?
  3. Hey Stella, do you guys have a really big cool pet shop up there? Just wondered whether it's worth having a browse around there too. Might even have to kick someone out of my car if you think I may need room to bring fish back......
  4. Hey BeDazzled, When I was breeding my guppies, I found I was most successful when I had a tank specific for my females. Here's what I did - I had a 40 litre tank set up like a tank, gravel, plants, caves etc. I had my best breeding females in the tank (usually only two at a time), and i would go out and purchase a male i wanted to breed from. The male went in with the girls, and I basically waited until she dropped her fry. I have been lucky enough to watch her birth her fry as well which was cool! Once she had dropped all her fry, I usually caught all the fry and placed them in to a breeding net, did a small water change, and depending on how the female looked, I either left the male in, or took him out to go in the community tank to look pretty. I eventually purchased a tank specifically to raise and grow the fry in as well, although I have given it all up for a while and all the guppies are all together at the mo. I have two very gravid females and neither seem to want to have babies just at the moment! Keep trying and I'm sure you'll get there in the end.
  5. I'd love to take pictures of them, but my cam,era really isn't good enough (waiting to win Lotto to buy a new one!) and I can't get them to sit still!!!! The other query I have is the temperature - I know their ideal temp is about 24C, but my 60 litre is a bit warmer than that, by about 4 degrees! Will they be ok once they acclimatise, or will the higher temp be too much for them?
  6. I'm glad there are some people out there willing to share! I'm really looking forward to it as it's my very first tank crawl!!! Perhaps we can organize for you guys to come down here towards the end of the year - my tanks aren't much, but I'd be more then willing to have people come around, have a look over a cup of coffee and offer any advice. :bounce:
  7. I've been on the CPD forum and had a good look at pics posted of the differences between the sexes, so I'm 99% certain, but you just never know.....I think I might put some Java moss in my 60 litre and chuck them in to see how they go, maybe in a few days....
  8. Hey thanx Cam! I had a read to see fo I could determine where my three females were up to; I think they're at the start, middle and towards the end! It's a pretty handy reference for people who aren't so sure
  9. :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: YAY!!!!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: I'm kinda excited, if you couldn't tell! Can't wait to meet everyone and share experience, knowledge, and tanks! YAY! And go Palmy for hosting us! cheers, Anita
  10. Well, I stood in front of my tank, and asked them nicely to come out of hiding and line up in front so I could have a good look at them - unfortunately they were not very obliging, LOL  I have had them for a while, and even after having another look again this afternoon when they finally came out for long enough, I still think I have males. There is still MAYBE ONE that is questionable, but they generally are all darker in colour, LOTS of colour on the anal fins, and very slim looking. I guess I'm happy to wait until I get more females, although they're hard to come by - I really do want more though, they're a beautiful fish :bounce:
  11. I do want to breed them, but at this stage I believe I have an all male group - no females. So until I can get a good few females to add to the group, the breeding has to go on hold.
  12. Hey y'all!!! I have a little tank in my bedroom that I originally purchased to be my hospital tank, but I ended up putting my Celestial Pearl Danios in it instead. But I've decided i really could do with a hospital tank, and my CPD's are so shy, it sort of seems a waste to have them in their own tank when you don't see them! I have a 60 litre tank set up with my male Siamese fighter, 6 sparkling gourami's, 2 pencil fish and 3 pygmy cory's - I have been told that you can have CPD's in a community tank, but would they be OK with the above mentioned fish? I don't want any of my fishies to suffer, and I don't want to risk losing the CPD's as they are still rare and expensive. Should I do it?

I have CPDS's (Celestial Pearl Danios) which I hoped might breed, but I don't think I have any females, although every time I look at them I'm sure I see one! I also purchased some female fighters from ADodge (pics posted on another thread) and put them in with my Male, but all they did is get choca with eggs and beat the living daylights out of him!!!! I gave up and put the girls back in the community tank to fight amongst themselves. Foxglove here on the forum has been successful with breeding Kribs and Brichardi cichlids (which has tempted me in to another tank to attempt my own breeding later on  ), have you considered either of these? The BN's look like a goer for later when you have the right sized male and female - Good Luck!
  14. I have Bumble Bee Gobies in both my fresh water tank and in my brackish tank. I have to say that the ones in the freshwater tank seem to be doing better - I got all bar one at the same time and split them in to two groups to see what worked best for them, but my feeling is that the Bumbles I purchased were born and raised in freshwater, and that's why they seem to be doing better, i.e. faster growth, more active, putting on weight etc. IMO it's personal preference. It works for me!
  15. Hey RochelleMay, I have a 4 foot com tank, and I have a variety of fish, and included are BumbleBee Gobies (because OMG they are so cute! :bounce: ) and they do just fine. Just make sure you don't have other fish with mouths large enough to house a BBG - they are pretty small! I also have a 60 litre with my male Siamese fighter and half a dozen Sparkling Gouramis - I got these because they have really neat jewel like colours, and although I liked Gouramis, I didn't want really big ones, so these are a good compromise because they don't get to be very large at all. I suppose it depends on what you like - I liked the Knife fish too, until I researched it and figured I really couldn't house it properly and it just wasn't worth sacrificing all my other fish for it's dinner! I prefer small fish, but that's just me!

Hey Cam, I didn't intend on breeding guppies, but they did it all by themselves, and I really enjoyed it for the first little while. The one thing I found REALLY cool was actually being able to watch my female birth her fry - even my teenage kids all stopped for a while to sit quietly by the tank and watch! If you want something easy and something that might be fun for your mum too, then give the guppies a go. I'm trying to breed some egg layers, but I'm not doing so good! Livebearers are so much easier for me! :bounce:
  17. Hi Caper! No, not all males figthers have long fins. I had been trying to buy a companaion for my lonely female for a few months now, and everytime I went in to the LFS they had heaps of fighters, but they were all short finned males, and had to be separated out in to a number of tanks. I even saw a really cool white one! So you do have to be careful when you purchase the fish to make sure you know exactly what you're getting. From what I have read of females, you can keep small groups of them which is what I have now, but they tend to have a bit of a pecking order. Mine are going through that now, and few little bits of fins have been chomped, but nothing major. I think when you raise them together from fry stage, all the females are ok, you just have to remove the males once they start to show signs of aggression.
  18. Sorry guys, should have explained a little better... Credit for the pics posted must go to the breeder - they are the pics emailed to me to choose which ones I wanted to buy. So no, my pink girls aren't showing any bars/lines, BUT, my blue and red girls are, although I can't get a good enough pic on my camera! :-? Here are some pics of Clifford.....apologies for the quality: he wouldn't stay still and packed a tantrum because i was putting something near his space! They don't really show the flecks in him very well, but you can get an idea of how he looks from the pics.
  19. Ok, Here goes.... The one with more red is Pinky. I got them from a breeder on Auckland via the forum. Every time I went to get one in the LFS they couldn't guarantee that they were female as they were a lot of short finned males around. I even saw a gorgeous white one, but the thought it was a male so I didn't get it. I wish I had now!
  20. I have a red long finned male with flecks of blue through him - we named him Clifford! My girls are all looking the same, although they are all different; I have Inky and Pinky, two pink females, one with red and white fins and one with more red in the fins; the other four are the blue/red variety, all in differing shades of redness or blueness, but they all seem a little stressed or frightened as they have the horizontal bars at the moment. What colour would the babies be if I cross Inky and Pinky with my red male? They're the ones that seem to be egg filled.
  21. Hey all! I recently purchased some beautiful female fighters to put in my community tank with my lonely girl I had. After watching them, they are a little shy, but I believe a few of them may be full of eggs. Can you leave them in that state, or should I try and breed them with the male I have in my other tank? I do have a spare tank although I don't have a filter, and I'm sure if I was successful with the fry I could do the long term raising if I purchased another spare tank. Is it a good idea, or should i just leave them alone? Will it harm them or make them uncomfortable being egg bound?
  22. Yep, it was a really fat frumpy cool looking fish! I liked it, just didn't have the urge to buy it without the females to service his needs!
  23. Yay it worked!!!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: Sorry it's a crap picture, but I have to wait until I win lotto to buy a better camera!
  24. Mine are no more than 2cm at most - my previous ones were a little smaller though and more colourful. I'll see if I can post a pic now the camera is working..... Ok, hope that worked this time!
  25. That sounds like a plan! I went out my LFS this afternoon and saw one lone male balloon molly - he looked cool but I just don't have the right space, and there were no females. My mollies are poo machines! I cleaned my tank on Friday and by yesterday there was a pile of poop on top of the bogwood! I would say the extra gravel vacuum ans water changes will be enough until you can sort out a larger tank or a second one, depending on what you do long term. Good Luck, and above all, have fun with your fish and your breeding if you decide to go ahead (though you may not get a choice with that if they go ahead and just do it!)
