  1. Can anyone tell me how you culture live bloodworm? I have a chilli bin outside with some gunged up weed from the pond in it. Mosquito larvae appeared in it so I have left it alone as a live food source over summer, but I've just plucked some out and there's a bright red little worm wriggling around in the water - I'm assuming it's bloodworm. Does anyone know how to keep them alive and make them breed?
  2. I currently don't have a good camera of my own, but I have access to my father's one which is relatively good. The idea behind the question is for more of a smaller species tank type idea, with the front pane of glass made from whatever is best for taking good shots. So, so far I'm guessing back, bottom and sides can all be normal 6mm glass, but the front would need to be a low ion glass, as clear in colour as possible so as not to distort the actual colour of the fish. I would have thought non-reflective would be good so as not to have too much background light showing up on the glass when taking the shot, but I'm not sure. can you get a low ion non reflective glass?
  3. So obviously most people photograph their fish through glass, but I wondered if there was any way to ensure the photos coming out better by changing the glass type and quality? For example: is 6mm glass better for photographing through than 8mm/10mm? Is non reflective glass better? That sort of thing. If there is ANYONE out there who can give me some tips on the glass side of things, that would be great! Thanx in advance!
  4. Can anyone give me some tips on cleaning up an old glass fish tank>? It's second hand but well built, sturdy etc but it has a few marks and scratches etc that I would like to remove if i can. Is there anything I can use that will give the tank a bit of a new look, maybe polish it up a bit?
  5. Just a reminder that the UHAS will have their final meeting for the year THIS WEDNESDAY the 10th, same time same place: 7:30pm start at the Maidstone Centre, 24-26 Goodshed road Upper Hutt Visitors are still more than welcome to come along and meet our members, share our BBQ and enjoy some Christmas merriment! See you all there! :bounce:
  6. I've just been looking at a few of the guppies I have actually kept (my breeding tank broke so I've had to keep them in a temporary home while I fix it! ) and I have a few that look like they could be really neat to breed from! I have tuxedos, some wild ones, some orange/white/yellow that have a platinum look...I'm looking forward to doing some breeding now too! What strains/types do you have so far?
  7. I wonder what makes platy's so special? I have 5 blue in another tank that need to be moved - I wonder if I put them in if things would change? That's weird that platy's have that effect
  8. I think they hide because the honey gourami in my tank seem to be the dominant force at the moment. one of the males has just started bubble nesting and is very territorial! My neons are funny - until yesterday i thought I only had 2 of the four left because I only ever saw two at any one time. then, i finally saw all 4 together so that was cool! I thought one of my fish had eaten them
  9. Thanx! I found the wood (the twisty one) down by the river after a big storm! I have 4 neon tetras in the tank, and I know I need more, I've just been waiting until I have the cash to buy some more. Do you reckon if I put a whole lot more neons in there that would help? The two female fighters may have to come out as they seem to be having a few problems in that tank.
  10. Thanks guys! That helps me a lot! One pup has 5 leaves and a new one coming through, the 2nd one has only 3 leaves, and the next shoot is just sending up the first leaf now. I think I will separate the first pup from the mother, and just wait a little longer with the other two. Have you had any luck with getting your plants to flower?
  11. I have a Jebo R3100 which has been set up for just on a year now. About two months ago, I decided that tank was a little heavily planted and I wanted to create a bit more free swimming space up the top for my fish. I found a wicked piece of wood, re-scaped that tank - I was happy. Problem is, my fish are not. Some of the fish started hiding under things - the complete opposite of what they used to do. I changed the tank so i could see my fish, now they're all hiding from me!! Here's a pic or two of the tank as it is now: I know my tank is over stocked, but here's what I've got: Khuli, corys, pygmy corys, 1 CAE, 2 SAE, 1 giant golden barb, checker barbs, 4 different types of tetras, honey gourami, baby mollies, badis, pearl leopard and albino danios, and 2 female fighters. They've all been living happily together up until the recent change, now my danios are hiding out majorly, and i don't see any of the tetras (I have to check daily to make sure they're all still there!) I took all the floating plant out when i changed it but have recently put a whole lot back in to see if it would help. Does anyone have any suggestions or bright ideas as to why they're all hiding, and how I can get them to come out?
  12. I haven't really had my platys that long, or made a concerted effort to breed them. Now they're in their own breeder, so hopefully i might have a little more luck!
  13. Oh My Gosh I just about wet myself the first time I watched cat man Do      Love it - just love it!
  14. Can anyone out there help me? My Tiger lotus now has two full pups and one little shoot coming out. I wanted to give one to a guy who came to see me today, but I wasn't sure about separating them yet. Anyone?
  15. I have a 4 foot tank that I was setting up for breeding, and wanted removable dividers too. You can buy commercially made ones, but they weren't the right size for my tank, so I made some from Polygal (plastic conservatory roofing product) ones. I put them in and it was working fine until I went and had a look at my tank one morning a few weeks ago.... I noticed all my baby mollies were in with the guppies, my catfish were all over the place, and even my largest female guppy was at the complete wrong end of the tank. What happened? The dividers I had used caused too much pressure on the front and back of the tank, and the pressure caused the brace along the top middle of the tank to pop off My front and back glass panes were bowed, but luckily I got to them before they cracked. Mad rush to empty the tank and rehome all my fish, but I got it sorted, now I'm just waiting for the glue to cure before trying again. Just a word to the wise - be careful and make sure your tank is strong enough to stand up to the dividers you choose to use.
  16. Hey KarenJoy! If you want to have some luck saving your guppy fry, try having a big area planted up with something bushy like Ambulia or Cabomba, and have some floating plant like water sprite/indian fern. That way the fry have places to go and hide. You could also try having a big bunch of Java Moss in there too. I just discovered the tiniest platy fry floating in some weed a few days ago, and now I have it in a plastic guppy breeder so i can target feed it and it won't get eaten by my other platties. It's only my second EVER platy fry!
  17. Do I dare ask how you are placed for the Feb issue thus far?........
  18. My Tiger Lotus has thrown out it's first pup ever, and I wondered when I should separate it from the mother plant? And does removing the pup have any influence on it producing more pups or producing flowers? I'd like to see it flower, and like to get more pups if poss - anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

  20. Caryl, how do you expect to bring back a pile of stuff in the back of an MX5?! I heard stories of stones in suitcases and the like.....
  21. Yeah, I like the idea of men doing work too! But really, it was an idea because if others want to become judges, it might be nice to learn a little about the experience before they commit to anything.
  22. They do! Pigs fly I've seen it. Just like I've seen men doing work.   Jim, why don't you write 300 words on your experience as a trainee judge at the Livebearer Show?
  23. Don't worry Tracy, I'm pretty new too, but here's what I know: - Conference is held every year, different location, and it's a chance for the Federation Exec to do stuff, as much as a social occasion for club members as well - clubs can offer to host the Conference, and some members in the area help organize accommodation, billeting, excursions etc - Conference 2009 is at Rings Beach in the Coromandel, hosted by the ever gracious John Eastwood - because there is limited accommodation, there was a condition imposed this year that anyone wanting a bed had to write an article for the AQ to reserve a space - it is sort of as much to help out Caryl as well as give a great opportunity for members and delegates to get in early Hope that helps!
  24. So I guess I don't have too much hope of finding others to share my petrol costs Come on guys, what's wrong with you all!!!!! A holiday, private beach, great company, lots of fish talk.....maybe that's what's putting people off!!!! It really doesn't take much to write an article, so for those that haven't yet, give it a go! I'd love to see the look on Caryl's face when she has TWO Aquarium World's done in advance!!!
  25. Don’t sweat the petty things and don’t pet the sweaty things. One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor….. Atheism is a non-prophet organization. If man evolved from monkeys and apes, why do we still have monkeys and apes? The main reason Santa is so jolly is because he knows where all the bad girls live. I went to a bookstore and asked the sales woman,â€Where’s the self-help section?†She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose. What if there were no hypothetical questions? If a deaf person swears, does his mother wash his hands with soap? If someone with multiple personalities threatens to kill himself, is it considered a hostage situation? Is there another word for synonym? Where do forest rangers go to “get away from it all?†What do you do when you see an endangered animal eating an endangered plant? If a parsley farmer is sued can they garnish his wages? Would a fly without wings be called a walk? Why do they lock gas station bathrooms? Are they afraid someone will clean them? If a turtle doesn’t have a shell, is he homeless or naked? Can vegetarians eat animal crackers? If the police arrest a mime, do they tell him he has the right to remain silent? Why do they put Braille on the drive-through bank machines? How do they get deer to cross the road only at those yellow road signs? What was the best thing before sliced bread? One nice thing about egotists: they don’t talk about other people. Does the Little Mermaid wear an algebra? Do infants enjoy infancy as much as adults enjoy adultery? How is it possible to have a civil war? If one synchronized swimmer drowns, do the rest drown, too? If you ate both pasta and antipasto, would you still be hungry? If you try to fail, and succeed, which have you done? Whose cruel idea was it for the word “Lisp†to have “S†in it? Why are hemorrhoids called “hemorrhoids†instead of “assteroidsâ€? Why is it called tourist season if we can’t shoot at them? Why is there an expiration date on sour cream? If you spin an oriental man in a circle three times does he become disoriented? Can an atheist get insurance against acts of God? I thought it was good giggle!
