  1. The colour does not look quite right to me, also a picture of the gills underneath would help, as their colour is important. If it is not like the bought ones, then no eaty
  2. I found that it only lasted about 1 year but, then I added no extra ferts, and grew a heck of a lot of water wisteria? in that time, so much that I had a hard time weeding it out, weekly :bounce:
  3. I raed ?somewhere? that , to mineralise soil all you need to do is select your soil, wet it thoroughly, spread on black polythene or equivalent, to dry, (then break it up as much as possible to dust) then repeat 3 or 4 times, and hey presto mineralised soil. I guess the point is to drown anything living in soil, and wash away the organicy bits.
  4. I have some aponogeton plants in with my goldfish, they seem almost untouched, and the plants seem to be okay with an unheated tank too.
  5. For a bottom weight why not use unpainted iron? As it rusts away, it might release iron for the plants??
  6. I got some from a stone supplier next to petals and pots in Pukekohe, the price was not too bad, but I did get it in several batches as there isnt always good stock in. :bounce:
  7. If I remember correctly, our one and only successful spawn did exactly that, they stayed on the bottom still for a couple of days, then began to move as their egg yolks were used up. However we still were able to kill them off, clening tank, and forgetting to turn heater back on in the middle of winter........
  8. try http://www.caudata.org/daphnia/ also http://aquamaniacs.net/forum/cms_view_a ... php?aid=33 I have a colony that i dont look after, and it waxes and wanes as it sees fit, but mostly i can get a small feed out of it all year. I have scanned these links, and theyb seem to talk a lot on green water, but the best bloom I have ever had, was in a 15' pond I had, 2 days after refilling with tap water, and the water was absolutely red and had I been able to harvest it all, there would have been netsfull. The point is I guess dont fret or get to stressed out about looking after them...
  9. there was a web page on commercial type breeding daphnia, but I have lost the link, but I think it said something about feeding them with a yeast type feed?? I might try to see if I can find it...
  10. The rumor was that the red ears are, in fact escapees from the Zoo, washed out during floods many years ago, and not retrieved.
  11. I saw turtles there a number of years ago, but dont know if they are breeding there?
  12. Mark male married 20 years, 2 teenage girls.
  13. Take care, before blaming the plumber. I Myself replaced a cylinder heater that had blown, and within 6 months it had failed, the supplier tried to blame it on bad water, fortunately the chap that got me the heater worked for the plumbing supplies company, and was able to refute that, so they had to conclude bad heater. So, maybe it was not the thermostat?
  14. To me it looks like a creeping ranunculus
  15. ezekiel  well technically it is a name, but one that also has a meaning
  16. i think (just my limited experience as a ftter turner ) that a thicker piece would be better, What do you mean by solid wood core thingy? If you mean real wood, then ok. but if you mean like particle board etc. then I would be even more worried, after all 750kg is 3/4 of a tonne, not what I want on my foot thank you.
  17. there is a place in Pukekohe that sells slate type rock, at a dollar a kilo. The pieces are sorted out into kilo piles from about 25 on down. :bounce: They also sell a limited pebble range, I believe cheaper than stone and water world. For me they are good, as they are on my way home
