  2. surely that cant be legal :digH:
  3. yeah a lot of junk there though , work a look just for the reptiles and the food
  4. here ya go viewtopic.php?f=40&t=59009 i now have 29 pages of photos on photobucket mainly to do with this forum lol
  5. for those of you that havent been to the gold coast water dragons are everywhere there in all the parks on rocks by the rivers . the ones in these pictures were at the currumbin wildlife sanctuary , i commented to a volunteer there that they were $300 in local pet shops in new zealand and she said the park has a a small fortune then! saltwater croc note the dragon the rock is adult and quite a distance above the croc trouble making frog in with the above frog smaller croc some kind of monitor these photos were taken at the carrara markets there is a stand there called lukes reptile kingdom he handles snakes and reptiles and has a permanent stall there as well as holding a small stall at the surfers paradise markets on weds nites. he was meant to be opening a reptile park later on this year http://carraramarkets.com.au/lukes-reptile-kingdom/ me holding an olive python it was really cool , really soft he also wrapped the snake around my neck and it " tasted" my ear with its tongue cost $10Aud for an A$ photo with a reptile or snake the rest of these photos are of dragons just outside the carrara markets two of them were having a fight and biting each other i didnt catch the biting in the video but you can see them staunching each other out video http://s257.photobucket.com/albums/hh22 ... p228-1.mp4
  6. Ive got some photos of water dragons and frogs and snakes as well as a short vid of water dragons fighting that ill post at some stage too
  7. archerfish at currumbin wildlife sanctuary went to the aquarium warehouse which is across the road from habourtown mall in Biggera waters large FOWLR tank large male only african tank was mainly peacocks but also saw yellows, kadangos, red empress, eyebiters and giaraffes easily the best looking hybrid ive seen dragon wrasses (marine) lionfish marine catfish of some sort the rest are from seaworld butterfly fish eating crab near an anenome copperband in rockpool had a look at quite a few l petshops and found prices for equipment to be higher than here even without taking into account the poor exchange rate they had nice africans and bettas in general and you can get land dwelling hermit crabs over there which is pretty cool
  8. i had them a few years back for a year and a half i think they slowly starved can take a long time
  9. because its not joined to any waterways legally you may be able to keep goldfish but i dont reccommend it :digH: , perhaps talk to doc and they may help out with natives , i dont reccommend taking natives from there natural environment to put in an artificial one but in this case with a lack of predators like trout they may do alright, as for trout and salmon it may not be worth the paperwork or hassles
  10. by the sounds of it you have a small filter with limited bio capacity, so removing the existing filter media wouldn't have done a lot as there will be plenty of bacteria all through the tank and substrate to support the bioload, using ceramic noodles would be more ideal as they provide a bigger surface area for bacteria growth. the carbon in freshwater filters is generally a waste of time particularly the cheap stuff that comes with the replacement filter wool as it is neither high enough quality or sufficient volume to make much impact on water quality . id just run noodles and no filter wool and a small pouch of purigen if space permitted. also be careful adding infusoria and the additive mentioned to your tank as its quite a small tank and may cause problems when the infusoria die off if too much is added. regular water changes will help combat this don't be afraid to do a 50% water change at least weekly the mussels and fish will fare better for it there are plenty of ways to culture infusoria mentioned on the net that turkey baster idea is a good one as it should help to not cloud the tank with infusoria

    Flow Meter

cant think of a way to do it cheaply but you can get a flow meter for almost any situation , and size pipe finding a cheap one that dosent contain brass may be a hassle
  12. its possible organism have one on the counter in the shop. in the long run it may be more hassle than its worth as keeping it cool in summer will be tricky, also not really any room for a decent skimmer so heaps water changes . purigen in the filter instead of foam , perhaps carbon as well.
  13. good work so far  i used be a gardener and the company i worked for was sub contracted to plant flax in gullys in the port hills in chch. horrible job on steep gullys in winter by the way. the land in the port hills had been cleared for grazing decades ago and this has had a bad effect on the sediment in the rivers and consequent build up of sediment in the estuary the flax with its dense fibrous roots traps a lot of this it also grows well in a bog setting. we also planted 3000 odd plants mainly flax, carex and toitoi in an area in halswell quarry park. this was to catch sediment in a bog area before it got too far downstream . the sediment was mainly coming from the sub division behind the park as well as grazing areas. perhaps sediment catchment plantings could be beneficial in your area
  14. if the micro bubbles are leaving the skimmer , it may be that its not set properly or run in yet failing that a small tube of foam can be but over the skimmer outlet to help reduce the bubbles another cause can be from the water falling to far to the return section this can fixed by putting more water in

    skimmer or not

skimmer would be the best way you could get away with water changes more volume and more often in the meantime what type of skimmer is it perhaps somebody on here has a cheap spare pump that could fit
  16. i found there at bunnings 12v ac or dc http://www.viribright.com/detail.aspx?id=73382 put out a fair amount of light
  17. probably more suitable ones else where but they will be better than the aquazonic as they have more power
  18. could chuck some carbon in the filter may help clear up leachate quicker. i wouldnt worry too much if water gets behind the background it will eventually anyway and will make its way inside they polystyrene between the beads. it will be a very good biological filter. you may get some mulm buil- up behind there but dont worry its harmless and you dont see the back of the tank anyway
  19. you could get some 12v leds off TM or jaycar and wire them up to an old transformer easy as that would be way better than .6w of led and less complicated and expensive than using cree leds and the like
  20. nah they are very dim i looked at them for my 7l i have way more light now with a half shot 9w flouro
  21. well finally built the sump last couple of nights its now set up , with freshwater . base is 10mm, rest is 6mm, drilled a 15mm hole in it for a 1/2 inch bulkhead fitting put a valve on the inside so i could close the cabinet door :gigl: skimmer is BM nac6 , filter sock can barely handle flow so may end up removing or going with bigger sock :bounce: heater is fluval E300 in one of the bubble traps as it need plenty of flow over it return pump is cheap knock off pump but works well rated at 4500lph but would be closer to 2800lph when head height is taken in account has a one way valve on it ( sump can hold extra until syphon breaks anyway if the valve fails) return is split into two ( see earlier pictures) and the eductors really hum , has some serious flow in there bought a seio m820 for $20 brand new and will get another, have taken out half of the grill on the water inlet and removed the adjustable ring for more flow, other filter in the sump is just a reactor filter gunna run phosphate remover in it. have to sort out wires , temp controll and fine tune a few things for noise but other wise almost ready to go water is pushing out of the filter sock too much flow for it too handle both hoses are 32mm one is not flowing any water as its a back up some nice turbulance on the surface the eductors really move the water
  22. to silicone the gap perhaps put silicone in a syringe ( no needle) , you could then attach airline to the syringe to direct it where you want it any excess can be cut away using a scalpel type knife
  23. what corals and other inverts do you have some use calcium hence the need to top it up with supplements or other methods they may be the reason why also other elements come into play when keeping KH and ph stable
  24. having the heater by the filter inlet should be fine thats what i did( a 300w jager on a 500lish tank) i make that hold bigger like you were saying the more room you have the better id also screnn off the opening to that gap for the heater so fish dont get stuck in there also make sure there are no gaps around the outside or bottom where fish can get in and get trapped because they will :dead%fish if ya do have any when u put it in silicone them up well
  25. it has a lot of foam in it most people call this mechanical filtration which it is however its also effective biological media
