  1. It's well known that parrots are man made hybrids. When they say that, "Noone knows what they come from." They mean that everyone argues over which particular species are hybridized to create it. I think most say it's a severum and red devil, some say firemouth, some totally different species.

Little bit of fishy viagra, mood music on some waterproof speakers in the tank, a few candles outside the tank....Hehehe.
  3. Hmmm, I really need to pump up the wattage on all my tanks. One is 4-5 feet deep and about .3 watts/L and the other is a standard depth and still just .3 watts/L. Both probably lose a lot due to lack of reflectors too.

One of my tanks is a Hex about 18 inches in diameter and is now about 6 feet tall after I cut a foot off of it. The plumbing for the filter comes through the bottom of the tank into a little cabinet at the bottom. You've probably seen similar ones, usually seem to be covered in black carpety stuff? Anyway, to change the water instead of siphoning it out of the tank I usually disconnect the hoses, It's an eheim with 2 little valves on the in hose and out hose, then just drain the water. One time I forgot to reconnect the plumbing after draining it. Not smart.

The tanks will probably have enough bacteria inside them to keep the spike small. I accidentally left one of my pumps disconnected for about 36 hours once and didn't get any noticable spike after reconnecting it. The bacteria would be coating every surface in the tank, not just the media in the filter. But, wouldn't hurt to keep an eye on it for the next week or two. After what she's been doing, testing the ammonia every other day won't be a bit of work.

    giant gourami

Imagine something like a cardinal tetra or a Siamese fighter the size of a giant gourami.
  8. What's your tapwater PH like? Are you filtering with peat or have a lot of wood in the tank? Adding a lot crushed coral to the substrate or in the filter will raise the PH. Where to get that? Ummm...I dunno.

Only 8 inches of snow knocked out the power and phones? Wow...That's...Pathetic. Maybe it's just cause I'm from Alaska, but 8 inches of snow probably wouldn't even get shoveled right away, we'd just drive over it and maybe lift our feet a bit higher when walking. Oh, and do donuts in big empty snowy parking lots, wheeee!

The female ones just get extremely bitchy for a few days every month.

    rocks

Depends on if it was foamingish fizz or just bubbles. I've got a lot of rocks that let out an impressive amount of bubbles when I put them in the tank. They just look like normal rocks but have maybe 10 streams of constant bubbles for an hour after putting them in the tank.

    archer

I saw an archer fish in a place in Dunedin. Don't remember the cost, but I do remember that it was cheaper than I expected.
  13. What do you mean by, "If you're siphoning you're breaking down"? I don't think I've ever heard anyone say that it was bad.

Maybe the ones at Animates are a different type, they were labeled as a dwarf flag cichlid and I did a very little bit of research on them and thought they were a dwarf cichlid and didn't get much bigger than 3 or so inches? Ok, here we go. Did a search on google's image search and it came up with these results for flag cichlid. THIS is the one I've seen, or similar at least labeled as a dwarf flag cichlid, this is the one I thought you were talking about. Its a Laetacara curviceps though. Now, THIS one must be what you meant...
  16. The nitr(a)te problems have been only in the last week. I've been using the stuff for 6 months. Anyway, this mix I actually took out the little bit of potassium nitrate the recipe wanted.
  17. http://www.thekrib.com/Plants/Fertilizer/sears-conlin.html This link goes to a page talking about fertilizers and plants. Basically the effects on plant growth of adding certain minerals and...Well, fertilizers. At the bottom it's got a recipe for cheap fertilizer. I haven't gotten exactly the right ingredients but I've gotten close using just normal trace element mix, epsom salts and chelated iron from a garden center. As for whether it helps or not...I'm not really sure. I've been using it in my tanks with plants because I'm on tank water so I figure it couldn't hurt to give them. I've tested it on a tank of guppies using huge doses of the fertilizer and it didn't seem to hurt them. And about $20 worth of ingredients lasts...Ummm....Well, I'm not sure, I made a 300ml mix up about 6 months ago and just now am making another batch, and that's using less than 1/10th of the ingredients. So, I'd guess about $2 a year for fertilizer? I suppose any of you guys with big planted tanks would already be doing something like this. If so, I MEANT to make a useless post.

I don't remember exactly. I think they were something like $12. Pretty little fish, I was seriously considering getting a few, but decided my tanks are getting pretty crowded already.

Yeah, a lot have teeth. My severums have tiny little teeth that look like black specks. At least, I think they're teeth.

Animates in Wellington had 1-2 when I was there last weekend.
  21. Yeah, I checked my tap water. It's 7 PH and 0 nitrates. I think the tetra tank was high because I slacked off on the water changes a bit. Doing less than 25% changes each week. The 200L, it was around what it normally is. About what you'd expect for a tank with about a dozen 5-6" fish and no plants.

    CALCULATE IT

Heh, Use this website to convert it. http://www.onlineconversion.com/ Has just about everything you could want. Doesn't have concentration though. Hmmm...
  24. Just tested the nitrates in the other two tanks. The 200 liter with my cichlids was around 70ish where I expected it, but the tetra tank which is full of plants was 0 the last time I checked it 2 weeks ago is now about the same 70ish. *Sigh* I think it's time for a round of midnight water changes. It's nice being unemployed and able to do that, unfortunately(Maybe) I start a crappy job monday and will have to stop again.
  25. My Keyhole cichlid is great at making me think he's dead. When he sleeps he sleeps DEEP. Can't wake him up at all, like he's in a coma. He also changes color from brown and black to grey and black, looks very dead, especially when he's drifting around the tank rolling upside down, bumping into things and not breathing. The first time I found him like that I thought, "Awww, he's dead. Better go find the net." Took me about 5 minutes to find the net and I'd told my wife he was dead. By the time I found the net she was looking at the tank, "What the hell are you talking about? He's swimming around right there." To keep on the topic of guppies. Those things are a lot more trouble than you'd think. I just found one dead in another tank. He'd been massively bloated for a month or two, I hadn't been able to do anything about it. He looks like his stomach burst. What a gruesome way to go. And there's another one in there that looks like he's starting to get the same way, but right now only looks kinda like he's got a double chin.
