  1. I was told also to watch out for the Tiger Barbs, but have had no problems with them to date. In fact they are probably the most friendly fish in my tank.Even my Angels who to start with were smaller than the Tigers. No fin nipping or anything. No aggressive behaviour at all!! I was also told to watch out for the behaviour of my Convicts and Kribs, but they all seem to be getting along fine with everything else. They have taken their own territories of course, but they all seem to keep within each others guide lines and this makes for a very peaceful tank. I don't know whether you could call this luck or not, but I do know that there are things I have been told to watch out for and they just don't seem to have happened. There again, some things have, so it just pays to watch for a while after you put new fish into your tank.
  2. Just a quick message to say that thanks to every bodies help I have restored my Ph to a normal level using baking soda very slowly. Things seem to be fine at this point but I am keeping an eye on it as it was such a sudden change. I am still worried as to the cause, as I haven't been doing anything differently but am looking into a few of the other suggestions the were posted in these replies. Thanks for everyones help once again.
  3. Just a quick message to sat that yes my Ph level has been restored thanks to the tips of using baking soda. I've done it very slowly as suggested and things seem to be fine now. I'm still a bit worried as to the cause, as it was a sudden change and I haven't been doing anything differently. But I will keep an eye on it and there were a few other suggestions from my posting under Freshwater thet I am intending to follow up on. Thanks every one for all the help.
  4. Hi Pegasus. Guilty only of not posting, have been visiting regularly though, as it is good to keep an eye on all the postings and gleen as much info as possible. I have just bought a Master Test kit to try to find out all the possible info needed to fix this problem, but wouldn't you know it, when I got it home I discovered that it was missing all its color charts. I went back to the store I bought it from and they have put me in touch with the producers of the kit, and I am now waiting for them to reply to my request for replacement charts. Until then I'm sorry but all I can give you is the PH (6.0) and the ammonia (0 ppm) It is becoming a very frustrating situation with my local store as I fear that they have gotten so used to seeing me.(Familiarity breeds contempt???) I just seem to get the brush off there at the moment. As I said in the last post, I will try any suggestions at this point,(so long as they are tried and true.) I don't want to put my fish through any undue stress. And not to worry. Now that I have found The Fishroom and had such a great response from everyone, I'm not about to leave in a hurry. There are too many people here that have a lot of great experience and a wealth of knowledge. Not to mention a lot of friendly feeling. Thanks guys!!!
  5. Have just done a Ph test on tap water and get areading of 7.0. I have one log in my big commiuntity tank along with numerous plants of all varieties and a few rocks. All were purchased at my local fish store, so I presume ( maybe wrongly) that all would be fine there. In my smaller tank (nursery)ther is no wood, just rocks and plants. Will try other suggestions and see how I go. Thanks for your help. Any other suggestions or ideas would be great.
  6. Hi guys. I have a major problem in that my Ph has just hit 6.0 in the space of a week for no apparent reason. I have been treating with Proper Ph 7.0 for the last 2 weeks with no lasting outcome. The Ph keeps going back to 6.0. Even with more frequent water changes because of the treatment. I there anybody out there that can help me with this problem as my local fish store have been of no real help. They basically told me to ad Activated Carbon to my filtration system and that should see it right, but it has had no affect what so ever. Should I be treating or should I be looking for the cause of this sudden rise in acidity?? And if so... What should I be looking for?? or treating with?? Any help would be greatly appreciated as the fish are still doing fine at the moment, but I fear that this wont last.
  7. Hello everybody. A quick thanks to all the new replies to my posting. Have had quite a few developments since I was here last. One of which being the death of both my smaller Rams with no apparent cause. Still have the larger male but he will stay lonely for a while as my Kribs have been very busy and produced another lot of fry which I am pleased to say are all doing well. But because of this I have had to set up a nusery tank and this has been keeping me busy. While I am here, can anybody tell me the best Ph level for Cichlids please. I have been having a few ups and downs in my community tank and would be interested to know as they don't seem to have minded either way (bar the deaths of my Rams) Will be posting more questions on Ph levels in the very near future as I am having real problems bringing it back from 6.0. Thanks again for all the help.
  8. Hi every body. I'm back and I've got another good problem that I could do with some help with please. A friend has five very large goldfish in a sizable tank, but would like to make it a lot greener looking than what it is. The problem is that no matter what sort of plant, or its size or how much she weighs it down, the fish seem to take great pride and joy in picking it apart or just gobbling it whole. We have tried feeding them more while we are trying to get the plants to take, we even added lettuce leaves to try to distract them, but they just devoured those and moved back to the menu of plants. So she gave up on live plants for a while and got some plastic ones but found that the fish were just damaging themselves on them, so removed them again. If anyone has some suggestions they would be gratefully received.
  9. Hi Everyone. I've finally found the time to come and introduce you all to our tanks. Sorry it has taken so long!!! I and the family have been growing in our interest ever since I bought my little boy a small 36 litre tank and some goldfish as a bribe to behave well, some 2 years ago. The fish I found for him were what I was told were Leopard Fish!! Still not sure what they were but they looked similar to a marble molly except slightly more slender in shape. The females tend to end up a lot larger than the males and they breed so readily that we ended up with having to get a larger tank to accomodate them all. They are live bearers by the way. If anyone could help with the proper name, it would be appreciated. Sorry cant help with a pisture as we're not set up for that. Since then we have moved on a bit and have purchased a 220 litre tank, and tropical set up. (Sorry dont know how this converts into gallons.) We still have the smaller tank which we have set up as a nursery tank as, without even trying, every thing we seem to get wants to mate at some time or another, so we are letting them take turns. I will be interesed to see what has to be said about our larger tank though as we have a few friends who think that we have over stocked, but things seem to be fine, so dont fix what aint broke, I say. Anyway here is what we have in our 220 litre tank. See what you think. 5 Golden Barbs 6 Ruby Barbs 7 Neon Tetras 4 Tiger Barbs 2 Algae Eaters 1 Golden Spotted Pleco 1 Red Tail Shark 3 Silver Sharks 4 small Angels 1 female Krib 3 Blue Rams 2 Convict Cichilds ( with new fry) (Sorry but we are still only coversant with the common names.) and believe it or not, until the Convicts Fry came they were all quite happy together as a community. Still not too bad except that the Convicts have taken over about a third of the tank as their territory, but they all seem to be coping with this quite well. Any ideas on how I could go about extracting the fry would be appreciated because at this stage Mum has got them hidden away in a cave she has made for them between a rock and the base of a plant. Or should I just leave it and see what happens??(They laid unfortunately while I was paying more attention to the Rams trying to figure out whether we had males or females.) Our smaller tank at this stage (36 litres) has our (hopefully) mating pair of Kribs, 1 Albino Pleco,1 surviving baby Krib and the 5 male Fantailed Guppies that I managed to save from the big tank after the Convicts decided to take to them. As you can see we have come a long way in our interest in fish, but we are now in the unfortunate position of having to do a crash course in fish care and the such, so are glad and thankful that we came across Pegasus and his introduction to your site. We look forward to any comments and helpful hints we might get Regards Seahorse.
  10. Hey Rob. Thanks again for all your help. I had come to the same conclusion about waiting for a while, although at this stage it is looking strongly like I have 2 males and a female. Is that a good thing or am I better, when it looks like mating time, to remove 1 of the males? Regards Seahorse.
  11. Het there Caryl and Rob. Thanx for answering me so quickly. On the Krib side of things this means a big hooray as I have 2 females and 1 male. I have had to move one of the females though as the other two seem to have paired off already and I think there may be some eggs.(dont want to disrupt them) Consequently they seem to be picking on the other female, so I have moved her to the community tank. Thanx for your help on that Caryl!! As for the Rams, I think that I have one large male ( the original fish) and two smaller females. Still a bit unsure of these two as one the spangles do go through the black blotch( this is the lighter colored one) the other has one or two spots over the blotch but mostly all around the edge of it. They are still quite young thigh, so do you think perhaps I would be better to wait a while and see what develops?? Sorry to be such a pain and to show sooooo much of my ignorance, but thats why I have been looking for a site like this. Antway enough prattle, Thanx again for your help, and be sure I will be back with more questions soon as My Convicys have also laid and I think I'm in for some fun!!! I'm going to be visiting the welcome page too. I'll spend a bit of time introducing my tanks and their set ups. It will be interesting to hear what some of your thoughts are on them. Anyway Thanx heaps again Kind Regards, Seahorse.
  12. Hi!! I'm new here. Thanx to Pegasus for introducing me to this site. I have a bit of a confusing problem that I hope someone can help me with. Back at xmas time I purchased a breeding pair of Blue rams and about 2 months later the one that I was told was the female died. I have since bought 2 more supposed females, but the sex identity factor here is what is confusing me. I have been told that the males are the most brightly colored and that the front rays on the dorsal fin are longer. Females have a pinkish spot on their bellies. My confusion lies in the fact that all 3 fish have extremely extended rays on their dorsals but only 2 of the three are highly colored, although all of them have bright pink bellies. HELP!!!!!!!!!! I also have a sex identity problem with my Kribs!! I have been told on one hand that the males are the most brightly colored of the two and that after the eggs are laid that he does most of the tending. I have had 3 lots of fry from my original pair, since then the one I was told was a female has died also. I was just browsing 2 weeks ago in my local pet store and found what I am fairly sure is a male krib, but this blows every thing I have been told out of the water, as he has none of the bright colors except for a touch of pink on his belly which darkens as he shows an interest in my other two Kribs. The reason I think it is a male is that his dorsal fin is longer than the others and comes to a definite point at the end. Am I right?????? The reason I am confused on this issue is the same as for the Rams. Can somebody please help me to clear this up as it is starting to drive me crazy, what with all the conflict in advise. Sorry for the long drawn out letter........but....... Looking forward to some responses Seahorse.
