    RO/DI Unit. Help?

I've also seen ads for pumps that are powered by the flow of the water(Not sure how that works) that increase the water pressure so the ratio of waste to RO water gets up to about 50%, if you're worried about wasting water.
  2. At the moment I'm not just put off by the cost, I'm put off by the lack of suppliers in the Wellington area and the lack of income to support it. In addition to the $100ish/month just in salt, $600ish in equipment, etc. I wouldn't put 2 KW of lighting over the tank though. Poor fish would go blind. Flourescent tubes are only a little dimmer, I think, than metal halides so I think 250 over my 200L would be far more than sufficient.
  3. Oooowwww...Forget that, if I ever can afford a marine tank I'll just install a bunch of flourescent tubes above it. For $700 I could put a couple kilowatts of light over the tank(Ignoring space of course:))
  4. Is a capitation the opposite of a decapitation?
  5. The female seemed fairly full of eggs so I thought I'd try it without conditioning her first. Maybe I should have given her time in the new tank to adjust without being pestered by the male?
  6. Spawning's gone great, no eggs and the female croaked. She wasn't looking too healthy after the last try, so maybe the extra stress was too much for her. It's the same tank and mostly the same water the fry were in and the male is fine so I don't think it was the water conditions that killed her. How long does it take for danio fry to be old enough to breed?
  7. Ok, I threw some carbon in the tank yesterday and it's cleared up today. NOt sure if it was because of the carbon though, because it's usually cleared up in a day or two before.
  8. Ok, I've got the danios set up again with the windbreak material as a net. We'll see what it looks like in a few days.
  9. I totally agree with putting endangered animals into programs to be bred as pets. Get at least a second population of them in the pet trade with breeders breeding them instead of all of them out in the wild where they're obviously not going to last long. Make sure that they're going to licensed breeders or something. Don't want bob and Jill saying, Gimme two kiwis! and then not taking care of them right until they die.
  10. There are no dead fish, I feed them twice a day and I don't have a box filter. Anyway, I doubt the feeding has anything to do with it seeing as it only happens in the big tank after a 50% water change, but not during the week. Probably my rainwater tank is getting a bit icky.
  11. The tank had stopped getting cloudy after water changes since about my last post. Then yesterday after the water change it decided to get cloudy again. I don't think it's the bird grit because my fry tank's done the same thing. Though, it didn't seem to be related to water changes, just slowly clouded up over the week.

    fine gravel

Sorry, Twiglands in Upper Hutt. He doesn't have any anymore, I bought the last of what he had ages ago and he said he's not going to get it anymore because his supplier will only sell it by the ton. (Or maybe tonne?)

    fine gravel

I've only been able to find some that size one place, More like coarse sand...Anyway he had it in little containers and I had to buy something like 50 of them, hehe.
  14. If the inlet is 1 meter high and the outlet is 1 meter high then that's 0 head.
  15. What color were they? I think brazilian puffers are usually sold as brazilian puffers? I don't know what the "Freshwater puffer" would be. Quite a few possibilities. It's kinda like just labeling a fish "South American Cichlid"
  16. If they're brazilian puffers, kind of a tan with black nads and a white belly, then they're very calm, not aggressive at all. Both of mine loved frozen bloodworms and anything live. One of them would eat frozen brineshrimp a bit, but didn't seem too fond of it. They love snails though.

    New fish in NZ

Quite a big difference actually. Goldfish and discus are just bred within their species for certain traits. Flowerhorns are hybrids of two different species. Not that I have a problem with them as long as they're not ugly or deformed.
  18. Nah, it wouldn't struggle against the water pressure. The water pressure would be pushing the water from the intake of the pump up through the hose to the waters surface. The only difference between having the pump 2 feet under water and having it at the waters surface would be the extra 2 feet of hose. Which...Wouldn't be any real resistance to the water flow.
  19. Yup, they should raise the PH.
  20. By brazilian puffer isn't a bit nippy, and he's in a tank with longfin danios and a threadfin rainbow. From what I've read, they aren't very nippy at all.
  21. Get some puffers. They'll totally stomp clown loaches for snail eating, I think.
  22. Haven't tried them again yet. I've got the 6 month old fry I'm considering throwing into the community tank, they seem big enough they won't be eaten and then I'll condition the female in the 100L tank the fry are in for a week or so. I picked up some windbreak material at the garden center, it looks about the size holes and was cheap. I looked at it before and didn't really consider it because I had in mind a stiffer material. I'm going to pick up some anti fungal stuff too. The cory eggs seemed to all fungus too, so I'm wondering if a light dose might save a few eggs. Maybe I have really fungusy water?

    Oh. Migod

Sounds like they're bigger than blue rams and blue rams did just fine in my SA cichlid tank with full grown Severums and Geophaguses. Oh, wait...We're not talking about microgeoetc Ramirezi are we?
  24. Hmmm, Potassium nitrate and sugar? Just pour the two together or does it have to be mixed in water to mix well and then dried? Hehehe, have to try that

    Oh. Migod

Only one clown loach as an adult? What?!? Only reasoning I can think of for that is because they get fairly big you wouldn't want a group of them in a small tank. But if you've got a nice sized tank the more clown loaches the happier they'll be...
