  1. hislop and barley in auckland have the elstein ones. same animal for half the price. they also have different models that look pretty cool.
  2. collected some today. Very small and very high pitched chirp. See how they go. Also got some of the native g-hoppers.
  3. I thought he wanted it under wraps. I only found out last week, and not my place to say...I guess he does not want people to know they have such a high $$ value and they end up getting ripped like the shingles etc. Good that he is being progressive.
  4. I can get some of the brown ones. They are much smaller no?
  5. Ha,ha...was not sure if he was going to put that out there....not sure who else is aware of that, I don't think Akl zoo is. The best scenario is to swap the zoo animals they want in exchange. Remember the shingle for bluey swap with wellington zoo? I am not sure whether they can sell animals to the public...anyone know?
  6. very small tank and too many heat spots....do you know what a 'cool spot' is. Not trying to be a smart ass but this is so basic...even if you googled you would know that this size tank is too small. Mouth open equals too hot...or broken jaw.
  7. actually she's a bit of a mess...the insect room renovation is underway. need more bugs...need more bugs. Hatching time soon.
  8. this dark pad aka the nupitial pad only goes black when the males are ready to breed. Stands out likes dogs b---s on the albinos.
  9. I could show you mine but I'll have to kill you
  10. 2 females and as many males as possible.
  11. sand is all good, just not a baby dragon..just to be extra safe. Stone and Water world in Ellerslie Auckland has the wicked stuff. Charcoal and Coffee grits are good and they have Aussie Sandstone pieces cheap. They used to sell avery nice silica sand that was so fine that the beardies prints showed off on it reaaly well. I herad that you need to have a mask when pouring the silica sand outdoors so I did not get it. Be keen to now if anyone has used silica sand...the fine powdery white sand.
  12. the albinos will breed at that age Alanmin. Just do the heater thing and keep them fed. A sure sign is when the females look gravid and the males have the nupital pads on the thumbs a nice black colour. Because your group..I am assuming... is small the downloading of litoria calls off the net would be a good idea. Large numbers of males jostling and croaking seems to be the key, and if you ain't got loads of males you need to make them think there are loads of males.
  13. who says its a strain....maybe I have become a purist..lol. WOK..WOOOK..WOOOOOK.
  14. yes....I guess they can tell how much you make. Under 30k no GST registration..no?
  15. yeah but you can sell to the highest bidder, meaning you have to run many different auctions....and pay the 6.9% success fee.
  16. Can a group of us chip in and pay for either Berend or Kevin from Lynfield vet to do some blood tests on some leopard tortoises from Ti Point. These guys are specialist reptile vets. If we could get a list from MAF of diseases they are concerned with thenif they came up clear, then surely this would give the green light? Given that both of these vets have have many letters after their names I would think that if they detailed all the possible diseases and the fact that the animals are clean then would this not be termed a health standard? Pretty simple I would have thought...correct me if I am wrong.
  17. Just noticed that you can not do classified on TM anymore...poos!!! I have a batch of extra special frogs for sale in 2 weeks and looks like I will have to do auctions...does anyone know how to get around this? If you like frogs then save your $$, a bit late for Xmas, but these are stunning..watch this space.
  18. check my old posts for detailed method on rain chamber, heating etc.
  19. Should not use fan incubator (aka forced air) incubator on reptile eggs unless you have container setup like pogona1. Reason being is that it dries out the eggs often, even if humidity is high. We are afterall trying to simulate natural conditions, and there is no way that there is air cond. when the eggs are buried. The other bonus about the container method is that you can keep the moisture level very constant by using this method: 1) get some scales. Place your plastic container on the scales and 'zero'the scales. Add your vermiculite/perlite. 2) however much your vermiculite/perlite weighs divide this number by 2 and this is how many grams of water you should add. e.g: 200g of vermiculite, add 100g water. Keep this sealed in your incubator and open for short periods of time to remove bad eggs or add more eggs. There is no need to add more water. Even if you never open it for the duration of the incubation the eggs will hatch. Eggs need very little oxygen to hatch..in the wild they are often buried 2 feet or more down. Hovabators are great and are cheap.
  20. Depends on whether you want an interactive pet...go with beardie (vitti)...or something that you can appreciate without handling..water dragon. Water dragons are brilliant in terms of an outdoor set-up that you can just watch. Be aware that outdoor housing for these is a must if they are to breed, and also if you want to see their 'true' behaviour. Water dragons should be raised indoors until they are around 45cm total length, at which point they can be housed outdoors. Adult animals will easily winter in NZ conditions without any supplemental heat. You can also heavily plant out their enclosure as they will not ravage your plants...beardies will. Water dragons tend to be skittish from a young age, but once they are around 20cm total length they will start going for your fingers at feeding time..this seems to be when they start to gain confidence. They will also happily feed on butch white label dog food. All this means that a group of w.d's is in the long run easier to keep than a group of beardies and cheaper too. Beardies (vitti) on the other hand are tame from when they are very young. Ideally they should also have an outdoor setup for the summer months. Coastal Beardies (barba) can be kept outdoors all year round from adult and are between w.d's and beardies (vitti) in terms of tameness and can be handled relatively easily. They will also quite happily share an enclosure with the water dragons as they are tolernat to humidity, whereas the inland beardie (vitti) is not. I will have all 3 types available come mid feb. PM me.
