  1. No, I didn't state that very well did I lol. I did the 50:50 ammonia:water. I didn't use the pH buffer and didn't notice any lessening effect. You can get pH buffer cheaper from a pool supply store than the LFS. Payless plastics used to stock it down the road from us.
  2. Those are nice fishes. Interesting to see if your substrate discolours any.
  3. I used it. It was great. It is recommended to recharge in Ammonia for 24 hours, and not bleach. As I understand it: Ammonia is ammonium and hydroxide. Bleach is ammonia and chlorine. (clearly not a chemistry major) If you use regular bleach the chlorine needs to be soaked out in dechlor. for a further 8 hours+. But otherwise a fantastic product for doing what it is sold to do!
  4. Our power bills hover around 700-800$. I have three 4'tanks which use ~$80 all together per month.
  5. I am curious as to what you love about Axolotl's and why you keep them? I had some when I was a kid and got bored with them. I think they are more interesting to look at than most other salamanders though.
  6. I use baking soda and white vinegar for my nets. Hydrogen peroxide for pumps, heaters, anything with algae on it. Isopropyl alcohol for spoons/thermometers etc.
  7. Clearly with three 70% water changes a week there is not a lot of plant and food materials. I stated DISSOLVED solids, not "Poo and stuff". I didn't think reading short sentences was really that difficult a concept neither
  8. Nah it's all good. You are not in any hole. There is just too much bureaucracy and rules for the sake of them. It is hard enough getting the "allowed" species imported let alone the non-allowed.
  9. You only need a cup, maybe 2. I only use 2 c for 325L.
  10. Bioballs increase the surface area for more colonization of nitrifying bacteria. I wouldn't replace them. I wouldn't replace them with carbon. I have found the best way to use carbon is to rinse it, then put it in the end of pantyhose and place it under the filter wool. This way the filter floss absorbs any loose carbon.
  11. Well seeing as carbon bonds with most things, it attaches to all the dissolved solids and thus polishes the water. But will start breaking down and releasing the stuff again ~48hours. It is clearly not just for meds.
  12. ITM do it cheap too. Mine didn't even charge me for the few bits I wanted. Placemakers do it too.
  13. Thanks Navarre will do. Yes all from the Hoki beach
  14. Try using activated carbon for two days in that filter on the discus tank.
  15. Enough? Maybe. You only have 27L. Honestly there is not that much space to grow plants in to start with. I wouldn't think co2 in that small a water column would not be much different from just using Fl. Excel. Excel would be a lot less hassle imo
  16. It is 7.30pm and the frost has set around our house and on the deck already. Bbrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  17. Pull the little cap off the air intake nub and add the co2 tube.
  18. That attachment is perfect for diy co2 tube attachment.
  19. If you cut the airline tube on a diagonal, and then drill the hole in the cap 1mm smaller than the tube, you will have a tight fit with no gas loss. A simple diffuser is to put a powerhead pump in the tube end of a gravel vac, and a sponge in the wide end, then drill a small hole in the top of the tube at near the powerhead pump end for the CO2 tube outlet. Then the powerhead pump forces the CO2 bubbles through the sponge making them tiny, and they dissolve into the water column of your tank.
  20. Eye spy with my little eye - a Betta! lol. Good luck on the nano planted. Looking forward to the updated pics.
  21. I have one at the moment. Will get another two Pictus next week.
