  1. They need a decent sized tank, they can grow to over a foot in size. I think the main thing is making sure they'll have enough room to turn around should they decide to puff up. They also need liverock to chew on to keep their teeth in check (otherwise you need to clip them) so having corals is pretty risky if you want a puffer. They'll eat anything that'll fit in their mouth, including other fish haha I've been considering a puffer for my new setup, but that option is running out quickly as I stock up. Might have to consider one of the smaller sharpnosed puffers How big was the puffer you saw?
  2. Nice to see another fellow chch'er taking up the hobby! As for RODI, its recommended and worth the expense, but not necessarily required depending on which part of town you are in. I'm in Sockburn/Yaldhurst area and I just use tap water and dupla marin salt mix. I'm going to get a decent RODI unit once finances permit, but for now tap water is doing the job fine NSW on the otherhand, you are right to stay well clear of that at the moment. Even before the quakes it was pretty difficult to find somewhere local to collect.
  3. I had quite a large Niger Trigger in a previous tank (Oh tank how I miss thee!) Triggers are awesome fish. If I could do another 600+ Litre build, i'd make a Trigger tank! Saw alot of Clown Triggers snorkelling in Fiji, Love em!
  4. I run a canister filter on my setup, but its for PO4 remover and carbon (or whatever else I feel like putting in it). Also useful as I run an intank skimmer (Tunze 9002) and so I've fitted a surface skimmer to the inlet of the canister filter to skim the film off the top of the water
  5. They're good, leave them in there
  6. Sorry, was just wanting to get some exposure
  7. Approx 10 year old Male Cockatiel named Trunks. Purchased 10 years ago as a bird my mum would take to school for the kids. Now with all of us moved out and mum no longer teaching, he's not getting the attention he needs. He's a bit special, quirky, and rather noisey. Loves attention (which he's not getting alot of anymore unfortunately), and I have had him out of the cage a few times. Hates being handled but once he's on ya shoulder or finger he's quite happy. He does talk a little too (Trunks is a good boy, Whatcha doin?, *wolf whistle*). He's still very trainable. Really needs someone who will spend time with him, talk to him, and give him his marmite on toast every morning. Has probably got another 5 - 10 years left in him, would be nice to know he's spending them well. Could possibly be a candidate for an aivary? I would've taken him myself but the Wife isn't very fond of him. Pickup in Christchurch to a suitable new home. Comes with cage, food etc PM me if interested or want to know more etc

    Eggies!

Female is JD, Male is EBJD I figured if you bred JD with Blue Gene with EBJD you'd get a few out of it?

    Eggies!

Aren't they hard enough to keep as is let alone inbreeding? Or is that not an issue?

    Eggies!

So just when I was about to look into selling my Fish as I was losing interest (and plan to do a Marine tank again next year) the female JD has laid some eggs! Be interesting to see if they live, Daddy is an EBJD so these will have the blue gene in them. (Old pic but he hasn't changed too much)
  11. Very nice! Do you know the sex of them? My one is about the same size, I think maybe female as theres been some nest creations appearing round the tank just recently
  12. Ahhh yes a few people I know got this call, so when I got mine, I played along with them for about 45mins Possibly the most entertaining thing I've had this year! I'm quite computer savvy, work in IT etc, so I knew how to act the fool So fake! Warn heaps about it though, it does catch the odd person out
  13. Having more than 28 Grams of weed (1 ounce) is deemed as supplying/dealing so consequences start getting serious Anything less, for a first offence tends to be a small fine and its on your record (as someone mentioned, this would restrict you from travelling to some countries) From my experience (of people I know) having 1 - 4 plants and being caught, if first time offence, is normally the maximum fine and a warning that they wont be so nice next time. Sorry to hear of your situation. I personally believe that it should be legalised. If they really want to cut down on gangs, then they need to take away 1 of their main sources of income. Noones going to buy from gangs if they can get it elsewhere or legally grow for personal use. This recent bust of places like Switched On Gardener, who supply the Hydroponic equipment, isn't going to do diddly squat in the long run, its mearly a quick fix, for an otherwise unstoppable market. Note: I am not a pot smoker (alergies), but I have many friends who are

    Unwell EBJD

Still not out of the woods yet, but he's definatly looking happier. With any luck he'll fight off the parasites without my intervention? (Is that possible?)

    Unwell EBJD

He's since coughed a big chunk of it back up again. Still, its a big improvement from waht he has been like. He's also eaten flake. If it was indigestion, its lasted 3 weeks. I'd be going to to Dr myself!

    Unwell EBJD

Ok we might not need to dose anything now Just watched him eat a whole cube of bloodworms, which he hasn't done for a few weeks now. He was also dancing and waiting for me to feed, another thing he hasn't done. Apart from him taking a while to actually swallow the bloodworms, it would appear he's feeling alot happier. Will keep everyone posted

Ok so the research done seems to suggest internal parasites. I have sourced some 400mg Metro Tabs. Being such a delicate fish, can anyone make some suggestions as to dosing? I've read it can be mixed in with frozen food. I'd quite like to give this a try if people think its worth a shot? Or should I jsut go whole hog, hospital tank, and dose properly?

    Unwell EBJD

Heyas A couple of weeks ago my EBJD decided to snack on a couple of LARGE Patties I had in the same tank. Unfortunatly his greedyness seems to have come at a price, and now he's not a happy chappy. He's become quite lethargic, not as active as I'm used to seeing him, and his interest in food has dramatically declined (he used to dance for me waiting for food, now he'll sit in his pot and just look) He's still eating, although barely. He used to treat himself to a whole cube of bloodworms, now he'll have a pew picks at it, have a small mouthful then go back to sitting on the substrate again. The last feed I gave him I saw him regurgitate a small bit and just left it. This is concerning as he's normally Pig Pig Piggy! He looks healthy, no signs of any external problems, and is still a very dynamic blue. My concern is that he's battling internal parasites which may have been in the Platties (I have seen white stringy poo!), or he's damaged his internals due to eating something he shouldn't have. Anyone got any advice as to what to do? I've noted this behaviour for a week now, and are concerned theres no noticable improvement. 19. I think that trying to find reasoning for these experiences using todays sciences will never provide results or solid evidence. Most of it can be explained in a way that does require an open mind (I.e accepting the possibility that science doesn't have all the answers.... Remember the earth used to be flat!), but also makes alot of sense once you can connect the dots. Its not something worth bringing up in a forum such as this as it'll only create controversy (as we've already seen) Anyways my story to share I was 17 and my parents bought motels. We moved in there and they ran the place. 1 - 2 times per week, in the mornings we'd go downstairs to find all the cupboards & draws in the kitchen were open. We never used to hear anything, and it would be at random times in the night. We tried to catch it in the act but it never happened while any of us were awake. I decided one night i'd open all the draws and cupboards to see what would happen. In the morning everything was closed and it never happened again

Great fish, I've had mine about a year, he's about 20cm now Used to hide all the time, now he'll come out quite often during the day, especially when theres food. Hangs around wiht my Blue Dempsey. Love watching them eating, swimming backwards/upsidedown etc
  21. Yep I bought a few bits from MicoBathrooms on Waterloo rd here. Alot of parts avaialble there that I couldn't find at Titre Men or Bunnings etc
  22. Great design! Man I miss my setup, seeing that really gets the juices flowing haha, I could set one up again no probs if I had the $$ Will be keeping an eye on this post!
  23. You'd love marine tanks then, all sorts of greeblies once its established lol It looks like an earwig mixed with a centipede, but the fact that it died when it was out of water is strange Will be interested to find out what it really is. When I first was setting up my marine tank I put some dead coral rock in there, and then I saw this large spider floating around shortly after, hahaha
