  1. Pump http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Ou ... 076486.htm 800L a hour $43 I have seen people use plastic bin's for there sump as they are cheap Say $20 for a nice new bin/or pick up an old tank of trademe Try and use alkathene fittings as they are way cheaper than pvc....dont settle for retail prices....get trade....its at least 60+% cheaper Say $20 for the fittings(you dont need many at all) That leaves $17 for random stuff
  2. I wouldn't have a clue. Ill check in the morning. Does it matter?
  3. I have my fx5 0.5m away from my bed and its loud but you get over it. I would go a sump as you could set one up for half the price of a fx5 and make it quieter. They look simple to make. Bet you could even set one up for $100 excluding media if you get trade prices on the pipes and fittings
  4. I have 2 fish bins with holes drilled in them covered in some shade cloth. I threw some dirt and food scraps into the bins and added 1kg of worms of trademe....now i have endless worms that i can up in seconds and my fish love me!
  5. Stella: Am i able to get some of the nice algae off you when i get my tank set up? I plan on throwing in snails from time to time (maybe full time  ) to keep my tank clean. I will have 300w of metal halide goodness for my 220L tank so i am going to attempt a planted native
  6. What dates are whitebait season? :-?

    Good deal?

I will have my 220L tank set up for under $250 excluding the plywood as we have heaps of it. It will be running metal halides 8)
  8. Where did you get it and how? what are you feeding it?
  9. With my 200L native tank. Do i cycle it the same as a tropical tank?
  10. Lamprey juveniles (ammocoetes) live in burrows in silty river edges and migrate out to sea after 4-5 years. Whilst at sea, the lamprey are parasites on marine life until, after another 4-5 years they migrate back up streams to breed and die. Maori consider lamprey or piharau to be a delicacy. They are threatened fish. Not like i will ever find one
  11. Doc just email'd me back and said "Hi , apparently only whitebaid and bullies" are the ones you cant keep I would love a Lamprey, Short Finned Eel and a Torrentfish among others. Finding them will be the hard part
  12. I was told that the eruptions over the years wiped most out. The ones that are in there where introduced. Im going to try and find a book on natives i think. If anyone finds some flick me a PM
  13. Is anyone able to catch some fish for me as Taupo is quite limited for natives? Im after a few species to fill my 220L
  14. I have been told that some are illegal to keep and have to get permission to catch them. There does not seam to be a list as such to what you can keep

  17. I will be talking to a man about a fish this evening. I will find out what species exactly are legal hopefully!
  18. I go have another chat to the wholesalers and make them work and see if the can find any cheaper as i get below trade prices...if not i will be forking out $280 for bulbs
  19. Millet: I hand feed my shrimp in small bits Personally i wouldn't leave it in the tank
  20. On a side note is feeding frozen shrimp to fish every day as their staple diet bad for them? Shrimp is all my datnoid will touch
  21. Try granumeat by sera and frozen shrimp
  22. I have been at the local wholesalers and they can only get them up to a kelvin rating of 4000k and will only cost me $25+ gst...but i need a higher kelvin lamp Where else can i look for them?
  23. Davidb: Yes i have searched this site and i have read all that material and more! Im looking at a short finned eel that grow to 90cm as a adult. It may take a long time to get that big. I plan on giving it away once it gets bigger or just get another tank for it if i attached to it
  24. Im going to ring DOC in the morning and have a chat about fish and gecko's Dad works for DOC and will have a chat to the guys at work Mum thinks that you cant catch koura unless your Maori or something. How much where they at the shop. Im sure i could get some in the lake easy...but catching the fish might be the hard part I would like say 4-5 species of fish and a few so i could try and breed them. I wouldn't mind a short finned eel, but i might eat my fish. I would like a native planted tank with a sand bottom. If anyone knows where to get some native plants from(even out of a stream) give me a PM
