  1. Ive got a heap of mountain minnows breeding in a large tank with 4 res, just gotta get fish that are fast :bounce:
  2. I agree on expensive if buying but after initial breeding stock is sorted I dont find breeding my own expensive or that time consuming, and from what I have witnessed the last couple of days locusts like to breed!
  3. yep, one on the bottom has black "lips", they've been at it for ages! how many times do they mate once they start?
  4. what do locusts look like when they are mating, mine are either "gettin it on " or wrestling each other to death! one is on the back of the other and not letting go, the bottom ones lower body is bent up towards the one on top.
  5. Just wondering what colour/pattern variations we have in NZ for the beardies, I see red and yellow, are any of the others available or kept here? Also what age do they start showing?
  6. perlite is quite course though, not like sand
  7. where can I get vermeculite from? can I use Perlite?
  8. Um dont know how a secret club could work when we are chatting about it on the forum  Even though an evil initiation does sound like fun!
  9. wow w/dragon enclosure looking good, you had the reeves in there when I was down, I have been looking for a suitable raunchslider ever since!
  10. its a bummer because its also great to share ideas and see other reptiles, I spose thats why so many reptile lovers go on forums.
  11. you can get locusts from Mike at biosupplies - www.ak.planet.gen.nz/~bio the other guys on this forum have good ideas on breeding, im just starting out.
  12. I mean with sorting out food, it was a bit of an after thought.
  13. he's lookin good now, I had a similiar thing with a couple of rescue res I got but their shells were almost white from bad husbandry, now they are similiar to your second pic which is how he should look, well done!
  14. yeah Ive just picked up 6 6foot pieces of safety glass that I am going to build into enclosures for my fish/reptile room and am putting all the lighting together and building with plywood, I think thats half the fun, changing the enclosures and making things more natural etc
  15. I thought that might be the case, I was really shocked with how the iguanas were handled, it think it has left a sour taste in a lot of peoples mouths, as I travel a lot I managed to see a few of them before they were taken, got some good pics of the auckland zoo ones, absolutely beautiful reptiles. I think maybe better education on the care for these reptiles would be a better way to go rather than push everything underground!
  16. yeah your're right, i've kept a few tanks with different fish over the years and they are more work than beardies, also they are nowhere near as interactive with you! I think with water/bearded dragons if you set yourself up well then they are very little work, unfortunitly I jumped in without setting up properly thats when it can get on top of you.
  17. man I dont know if I could feed mice or bird babies Bulldogod, as a new beardie keeper I would recommend getting to grips with breeding locusts and to get a colony going before purchasing the dragon, also mealworms and wax mothes, i didnt do this and it has cost me a bit, hopefully soon i will be self sufficient i still think they are awesome and once setup are really cool and respond well to you, i am looking to get even more soon.
  18. just wondering if there are any exotic reptile groups out there that get together and check out each others enclosures etc I know about the herp society but there seems to be heaps of exotic keepers around but no one getting together, or maybe I just don't get invited! LOL Anyone keen? :bounce:
  19. Yes DavidB, I agree some pics would be awesome, i am taking out the substrate tonight. Also I thought locusts get all their moisture from the grass and cabbage leaves and that to much humidty is bad for them. Thanks also to Repto for your good advice.
  20. i have got the sand directly under the light, should I move it to one of the corners? Have you had good success with the vermiculite as I have heaps of it for my plants?
  21. I have been told that dry cat food is good, has calcium and minerals in it, just check the packaging. Tryed it with some of my pond turtles and they loved it.
  22. What type of enclosure do you keep your waterdragons in? does anyone know the best way of breeding locusts, costing me a packet in live food!
